The more thy need smites thee the more eagerly wilt thou cry unto the Lord concerning it. Art thou desirous of bread for thy soul, be hungry, and let thine hunger eat into thy heart. See, then, our absolute dependence upon the Holy Spirit, you will not even know that you need more, nor groan after more, unless He works in you to desire and to agonize according to His own good pleasure. I answer, you have done well to learn the letter of the Truth of God, but you still need the Spirit of God to make it the light and power of God to your soul.
There is no respect in which faith is not useful to us. Therefore, whatever you leave out, see to your faith. If you forget all besides, be careful above all that you take the shield of faith. Faith, then, is like a shield because it has to bear the blows.
Some silly professors have a faith but they have not got it with them when they need it. They have it with them when there are no enemies. When all goes well with them, then they can believe. But just when the pinch comes, then their faith fails.
Faith means trust in Christ. “O Lord, give me grace to feel my need of thy grace! Give me grace to ask for thy grace! Give me grace to receive thy grace!” See ye not what scope there is for prayer!
Continue, therefore, to be instant in it. We are allowed in the holy confidence of faith to resolve that we will seek until we find, we will ask until we receive, we will knock until the door is opened unto us. Our case is urgent, and we must needs press it till our suit is gained. The least faith in Jesus is the gift of God and it is "like precious faith," though it is not like strong faith.
If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you can do wonders. No gulf divides Little Faith from Great Faith, on the contrary, Little Faith has only to travel along the royal road and he shall overtake his stronger Brother. It is a blessed thing, this little faith, not its littleness, but its faith. If I could kill the weakness and quicken the faith, if the littleness could be removed and the faith could be increased, how glad should I be!
Ah, but a faith which does not produce works is a faith that will only deceive. If you have never hated the sins which once you loved, if you do not now hate them and endeavor to be rid of them, if you do not humble yourself before God on account of them, as the Lord lives, you know nothing about saving faith! For faith puts a distance between us and sin. A man is a liar who says, "I believe that yonder bleeding Savior suffered on account of my sins," and yet holds good fellowship with the very sins that put Christ to death!
Oh, Sirs, a faith in the bleeding Savior is a faith that craves for vengeance upon every form of sin! That faith which saves the soul is a real faith, and a real faith sanctifies men. It makes them say, "Lord, thou hast forgiven me my sins; I will sin no more." Hear this then: “He that has no money; come, buy, and eat.” I tell you that a true sense of need is His work in you, you must get it from Him without money and without price. "Ah, but I must be something." Say, rather, you must be nothing!
Upon the shield of our faith we catch his arrows, and by the sword of our faith we smite him to the very heart. There is no temptation that ever can assail a Believer but faith can certainly supply an antidote. Stand in agreement then, but see to it that your faith is the faith that begins and ends with Jesus, the faith that drops down into the man’s arms, the faith that sanctifies and makes you hate the sin that once you loved.
