We hear the desperation and fear in your heart as you cry out to the Lord on behalf of your son. The weight of this situation is heavy, and we stand with you in prayer, lifting this burden before our Heavenly Father. First, we want to acknowledge your faith in Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the throne of grace. We are reminded of Hebrews 4:16, which says, "Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need." You are not alone in this struggle, and we join you in seeking God’s wisdom and intervention.
The frustration and helplessness you feel are understandable, especially when it seems like the Lord has not yet answered this specific prayer. But we must remember that God’s timing and ways are not our own. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," says Yahweh. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." Though it may feel like He is silent, we know that He hears every cry of our hearts and works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
Your son’s refusal to attend school is deeply concerning, not only for his education but for his spiritual and emotional well-being. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." This season is an opportunity for you to guide him with love, patience, and firmness, trusting that the Lord will soften his heart. It is also important to seek out the root of his resistance—whether it is fear, anxiety, bullying, or something else. Sometimes, what appears as defiance is actually a cry for help. We pray that God would give you discernment to uncover the truth and wisdom to address it.
We must also rebuke the spirit of deception that may be at work in this situation. Your son is claiming to be sick when he is not, and this dishonesty is not pleasing to the Lord. Proverbs 12:22 says, "Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight." We pray that God would convict his heart and lead him to repentance, replacing deception with truth. Additionally, we rebuke any spirit of rebellion or laziness that may be influencing him. Colossians 3:20 reminds children, "Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord." While this verse is directed at children, it is a principle that applies to all of us—obedience to authority is pleasing to God.
We also want to encourage you to seek godly counsel and support. You mentioned feeling alone in this, but the body of Christ is called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Is there a pastor, mentor, or trusted friend who can come alongside you and your son? Sometimes, an outside perspective can provide the breakthrough you need. Additionally, we urge you to continue praying for your son, not just for his immediate return to school, but for his heart to be drawn closer to the Lord. Pray that God would reveal Himself to him in a powerful way and that he would surrender his life fully to Christ.
Let us pray together now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this mother and her son to You. Lord, we know that You see the struggle they are facing, and we ask for Your mercy and grace to intervene. Father, we pray for this young man—that You would soften his heart and remove any spirit of rebellion, deception, or fear that is keeping him from fulfilling his responsibilities. Give him a desire to honor You with his actions, including his obedience to his parents and to the authorities You have placed over him.
Lord, we ask that You would reveal to him the truth about his situation. If there is something deeper causing his refusal to attend school, we pray that You would bring it to light and provide healing and resolution. Give his mother wisdom, patience, and strength as she navigates this difficult season. Surround her with godly support and encouragement, and let her feel Your presence in a tangible way.
Father, we also pray for the school and those in authority over this situation. Grant them compassion and understanding as they work with this family, and give them wisdom in how to proceed. We ask that You would work a miracle in this young man’s heart, that he would wake up tomorrow with a renewed sense of purpose and a willingness to return to school. Let this be a turning point in his life, where he grows in maturity and responsibility.
Above all, Lord, we pray that both this mother and her son would draw closer to You. Let this trial be an opportunity for their faith to grow stronger and for their relationship with You to deepen. We trust in Your perfect timing and Your unfailing love, and we declare that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to hold fast to your faith, even when the answers don’t come as quickly as you hope. Continue to seek the Lord, and trust that He is working even in the waiting. Keep praying, keep loving your son, and keep pointing him to Christ. The Lord is faithful, and He will not abandon you in this struggle.
