We hear your heartbreak, dear sister in Christ, and we join you in lifting your son before the throne of grace. It is a heavy burden to carry when a child who once professed faith turns away, especially one who has already walked through the fire of illness and seen God’s miraculous hand. We understand the devastation, but we also know that our God is faithful, even when our children are not. Let us stand together on His promises and intercede for your son with boldness and hope.
First, we must remember that salvation is not merely a prayer spoken in childhood—it is a work of the Holy Spirit that transforms the heart. Your son’s profession as a young person was a beautiful beginning, but true faith endures through trials, doubts, and seasons of testing. The fact that he is now questioning does not mean God has abandoned him; rather, it may be an opportunity for his faith to be refined. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we might have life abundantly (John 10:10). We rebuke the spirit of unbelief that has taken root in your son’s heart, and we declare that God is not done with him yet.
You mentioned that he is a cancer survivor—a true miracle. This is not a coincidence, dear one. God spared his life for a purpose, and we must believe that His purposes cannot be thwarted. The same God who healed him physically desires to heal his soul. We pray that the memory of that miracle would haunt him in the best way—that he would not be able to shake the reality of God’s power in his life. As it says in Ecclesiastes 3:11, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts." There is a God-shaped void in your son’s heart that only the Lord can fill, and we trust that He will use every circumstance—even this season of doubt—to draw him back.
We also lift up your prayers for someone to come into his life whom he cannot deny is of God. This is a powerful request, and we join you in asking the Lord to send laborers into his path. Perhaps it will be a friend, a mentor, or even a stranger whose testimony will shake him to his core. We pray that God would surround him with believers who walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, whose lives bear undeniable fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Let these witnesses be living proof of the reality of Christ.
But we must also address the role of prayer and intercession in this battle. Your prayers are not falling on deaf ears. The Word of God assures us that "the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much" (James 5:16). Do not grow weary in praying for your son, even when you see no immediate change. The Lord hears you, and He is working even when we cannot see it. We encourage you to pray specifically—not just for his return to faith, but for his heart to be softened, for his eyes to be opened to the truth, and for any strongholds of deception to be broken in Jesus’ name.
We must also gently remind you that while your grief is valid, we cannot allow despair to take root. The enemy would love for you to believe that your son is lost forever, but we serve a God who leaves the ninety-nine to pursue the one (Luke 15:4). Your son is not beyond the reach of God’s grace. We declare over him the promise of Philippians 1:6: "Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." The same God who started this work in your son’s life will bring it to completion.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear mother and her son. Lord, we thank You for the miracle You performed in his life, sparing him from cancer and demonstrating Your power. We ask that You would remind him of that miracle, that it would be a testimony he cannot ignore. Father, we rebuke the spirit of unbelief that has taken hold of him, and we declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). We ask that You would send laborers into his life—men and women of God who will speak truth into his heart and model a life surrendered to You.
Lord, we pray for a divine encounter. Let him experience Your presence in a way that leaves no room for doubt. Soften his heart, remove any hardness, and let him see the emptiness of a life lived apart from You. We ask that You would surround him with Your love, even in this season of wandering. And for this mother, Lord, give her peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Let her rest in the knowledge that You are at work, even when she cannot see it. Strengthen her faith, and let her be a living testimony of Your grace to her son.
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We declare that Your will shall be done in this young man’s life, and we trust You to complete the work You have begun. Amen.
In the meantime, dear sister, continue to live out your faith before your son. Let your life be a testimony of God’s goodness, even in the midst of pain. Do not engage in arguments or debates about faith, for the Word tells us that "the Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient, in gentleness correcting those who oppose him" (2 Timothy 2:24-25). Instead, let your love for him—and your unwavering trust in God—speak volumes.
We also encourage you to seek out other believers who can stand with you in prayer. There is power in corporate intercession, and you do not have to carry this burden alone. The body of Christ is here to support you, to lift you up when you are weary, and to remind you of God’s faithfulness.
Lastly, we want to remind you that your son’s salvation is not ultimately dependent on you. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. You have planted seeds, and others may water, but God gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). Rest in that truth, and do not carry a burden that was never yours to bear. God loves your son more than you ever could, and He is pursuing him even now.
We stand with you, dear sister, and we believe with all our hearts that God is not finished with your son. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep hoping in the Lord. His promises never fail.
