Son and relationship

Anonymous

Beloved of All
My son, age 26, was dating a 20-year-old who we barely met like 3 times. She’s very controlling and has pulled him away from the family. Recently found out she's pregnant. And 4 days later, he tells me they both did the informal marriage at the courthouse since you don’t have to wait 72 hours. But this was all her idea, he says. When asked why so fast, she stated she didn’t have insurance and her dad had her on his insurance but it wouldn’t cover prenatal visits. Then she says she got denied Medicaid twice within 2 weeks. I know it’s lies. Then she says she might be further along in the pregnancy. She also stated she does not want anyone the day of the delivery at the hospital. She does not have a bond with her mom or dad. So they won’t be there, she says. But I explained to my only son how I felt robbed from these milestones in his life. First, because he did the informal marriage at the courthouse, now with this pregnancy, we can’t even be at the hospital in the waiting area. Because she states she will have us kicked out. And this is supposed to be my first grandchild. I just feel like she’s hiding something. His younger sisters are hurt and so am I. So I pray that my son opens his eyes. And if this relationship isn’t for him, that he leaves and provides for this child if it’s his. I feel in my heart something isn’t right in this relationship.

We hear your heartache and concern for your son, and we join you in bringing this heavy burden before the Lord. This situation is deeply painful, not only because of the suddenness of these life-changing events but also because of the clear signs of manipulation, deception, and a disregard for godly family bonds. The way this young woman has isolated your son, rushed him into marriage under questionable pretenses, and now seeks to exclude your family from the birth of your grandchild is not only hurtful—it is contrary to the biblical design for marriage and family.

First, we must address the foundation of this union. Marriage is a sacred covenant before God, not merely a legal transaction to secure benefits or cover up sin. The Bible warns us in Proverbs 19:2, "It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way." Your son and this young woman have acted in haste, and their decision to marry so quickly—especially under the pressure of an unplanned pregnancy—does not reflect the wisdom or patience that God calls for in such a lifelong commitment. The fact that she initiated this rushed marriage and has already shown controlling behavior is a red flag that this relationship may not be built on mutual respect, love, or godly principles.

We must also rebuke the sin of fornication that led to this pregnancy. Scripture is clear in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, "Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." This sin has consequences, and while we do not condemn your son or this young woman, we must call this what it is and urge repentance. The child conceived in this sin is innocent and deserves love, but the circumstances surrounding this pregnancy and marriage are not aligned with God’s will.

The controlling and deceptive behavior you’ve described is also deeply troubling. A godly marriage is built on trust, transparency, and mutual submission, not manipulation or secrecy. Ephesians 5:22-25 outlines the biblical roles in marriage, but it begins with a foundation of love and respect: "Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord... Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it." There is no room in a Christ-centered marriage for one spouse to isolate the other from family or to make demands that exclude loved ones from significant life events. This young woman’s insistence on excluding your family from the hospital during the birth of your grandchild is not only hurtful but also unbiblical. Family is a gift from God, and healthy relationships should honor and include those bonds, not tear them apart.

We must also address the lies you suspect she has told. Proverbs 12:22 says, "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who do the truth are his delight." If she has been dishonest about her insurance situation, the timeline of the pregnancy, or her intentions, this is a serious breach of trust. Deception has no place in a marriage, and your son must seek the truth with wisdom and discernment. We pray that God will reveal any hidden motives or lies and that your son will have the courage to confront them.

Your feelings of being "robbed" of these milestones are valid. God designed family to celebrate and support one another through life’s most important moments. Psalm 127:3 reminds us, "Behold, children are a heritage of the Lord. The fruit of the womb is his reward." The birth of a grandchild is a joyous occasion, and it is heartbreaking that this young woman seeks to deny you and your family the opportunity to share in that joy. However, we must also guard our hearts against bitterness. Hebrews 12:15 warns, "Looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it." While your pain is understandable, we must pray for healing and trust that God will work in this situation for His glory.

We also lift up your son’s younger sisters, who are undoubtedly hurting as well. Their brother has made choices that have deeply affected them, and they need your love, reassurance, and prayers. Remind them that God sees their pain and that He is their comfort. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."

Now, let us come before the Lord in prayer, lifting up your son, this young woman, their unborn child, and your entire family:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, seeking Your wisdom, mercy, and intervention in this situation. Lord, we lift up this young couple and their unborn child to You. We ask that You would open their eyes to the truth and reveal any deception or manipulation in this relationship. Father, we pray for Your conviction to fall upon their hearts, leading them to repentance for any sin, including the sin of fornication that led to this pregnancy. We ask that You would soften their hearts to Your will and guide them in the path of righteousness.

Lord, we specifically pray for this young man, that You would give him discernment and wisdom. Help him to see the truth about this relationship and to have the courage to stand firm in his faith and values. If this marriage is not of You, we pray that You would make a way for him to honorably and responsibly provide for his child while protecting his own heart and future. Give him the strength to resist manipulation and to seek godly counsel.

Father, we also pray for this young woman. We ask that You would break any chains of control, deception, or fear in her life. Draw her to Yourself, Lord, and show her the love and grace that can only be found in You. Help her to see the value of family and the importance of honesty and transparency in her relationships. If there is any hidden sin or motive in her heart, we ask that You would bring it to light and lead her to repentance.

Lord, we pray for the unborn child, that You would protect this little one and knit them together in their mother’s womb. May this child be a blessing and a reminder of Your grace, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. We ask that You would work in the hearts of the parents to raise this child in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Father, we also lift up this family who is hurting. Comfort their hearts and heal the pain of being excluded from these significant moments. Give them the strength to forgive and the wisdom to know how to respond in love, even when they feel wronged. Help them to guard their hearts against bitterness and to trust in Your sovereign plan, even when it is difficult to understand.

Lord, we ask that You would restore what has been broken in this situation. Whether that means healing this marriage according to Your will or providing a way for Your people to walk in integrity and honor, we trust that You are at work. Give this family the grace to extend love and support to one another, even in the midst of this trial.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come before You. It is through His sacrifice that we have access to Your throne of grace, and it is by His blood that we are forgiven and made new. We ask that You would move powerfully in this situation, bringing glory to Your name and drawing all involved closer to You. Amen.

We encourage you to continue praying fervently for your son and to seek godly counsel from your pastor or a trusted Christian mentor. This is a difficult season, but God is faithful, and He sees your tears. Trust in Him to work all things together for good, even when the path is unclear. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Hold fast to His promises, and do not lose hope. Your son needs your prayers, your love, and your example of faith now more than ever.

Dear friend,

We're right there with you, feeling the weight of your son's situation. It's heartbreaking to see him in a rushed marriage, with a pregnancy that wasn't planned, and a partner who seems to be isolating him from his family. We understand the pain you're feeling, like something is being hidden, and the worry about the future of this relationship and the child on the way.

We've been praying for your son, for wisdom and discernment. We're asking God to open his eyes to the truth, to reveal any deception or manipulation, and to give him the courage to face whatever he finds. We're also praying for the young woman, that God would soften her heart and draw her to Him, breaking any chains of control or fear in her life.

We've been thinking about your son's younger sisters too. They're hurting, and they need your love, reassurance, and prayers. Remind them that God sees their pain and is their comfort. We're praying for healing and restoration for your whole family.

We've been asking God to protect the unborn child, knitting them together in their mother's womb, and working in the hearts of the parents to raise this child in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

We're also praying for God's will to be done in this situation. If this marriage isn't what God wants for your son, we're asking God to make a way for him to honorably and responsibly provide for his child while protecting his own heart and future.

We know this is a difficult time, but we're here with you, praying and hoping with you. We're trusting that God is at work, even when the path isn't clear. Let's keep praying, seeking God's face together.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
