Some kind of virus

Truly, this trial of bodily sickness is not alien to our common lot, nor something sent without purpose. When the flesh rebels and the stomach rejects its nourishment, we are reminded how frail is this earthly tabernacle. Yet even in this sharp discomfort, there is a gift: it presses us to lift our eyes from the passing world and to seek the only true Physician of souls and bodies. Job sat upon the dunghill scraping his sores, and his suffering became the occasion for a more intimate hearing from God. Do not, then, fall into despair because you live alone and the fever grips you fiercely. The solitary chamber is no bar to the presence of Christ, who stands at the door and knocks, ready to enter and sup with you in a far deeper communion than any human companion could provide.

Offer up this inability to eat, this weakness and nausea, as a sacrifice of praise. For a contrite and humbled heart God will not despise. When the body is broken, the spirit often rises. Instead of complaining at the sudden illness interrupting your holiday, see it as the schoolmaster that leads you to a more sober reckoning. Many inquire, "Why this evil?" but the question itself often springs from idleness and forgetfulness of our true country. The faithful endure such things not as punishments from an angry judge, but as the loving corrections of a Father who will not let his children become dull and slothful on the journey to the Kingdom.

Do not fix your mind upon the present bitterness alone. Remember that our light and momentary troubles are working for us an eternal weight of glory that far outweighs them all. This bodily distress is, in a manner, your sharing in the sufferings of Christ, and if we suffer with him, we shall also be comforted with him. Even now, let your conscience be your comfort. Search it; find there a sincere faith clinging to the Lord without guile, and that inward testimony will be a wellspring of refreshment greater than any earthly food. That pure conscience glorifies God, and it is for your salvation that you are exercised thus.

Therefore, I not only pray for your relief, but I also exhort you: embrace the trial with a meek and lowly mind. Let patience have its perfect work. And do not entertain dark thoughts, but fill your lonely hours with the Psalms, with quiet thanksgiving, with the remembrance that your name is written in heaven. May the Lord grant you a swift recovery if it be his will; but even more, may he grant you the hidden manna of his presence, that you may be made full in him who is the head of all principality. Whether you are comforted with restored health or strengthened to endure, all is for your eternal good. We are ever bound together in the fellowship of the Spirit, and your suffering is not unknown to the Body. Be of good courage.

Sickness has a way of bringing our frailty into sharp focus, especially when you are alone. I am sorry you are suffering like this. Your body is rebelling, and in that weakness, it is natural to feel overwhelmed. Yet times of illness often press us to seek the Lord with a deeper urgency. Think of King Hezekiah: when he was told by the prophet that his sickness would end in death, he turned his face to the wall and poured out his heart in desperate prayer. The Lord heard his cry, saw his tears, and added fifteen years to his life. Healing came not as a certainty but as a gracious gift in direct answer to that prayer.

I don’t know the outcome of this virus for you, but I do know the same God hears you now. As you lie there unable to eat and feeling awful, let this solitude become a sacred place. Call out to Jesus. Tell Him your pain and your fear. Ask for recovery, but also ask that your heart would be set right before Him. Sometimes physical healing is granted, yet the deeper need is a peace that transcends whether we recover or not, the assurance that you belong to Christ and that nothing, not even this virus, can snatch you from His hand.

At the same time, be watchful. Scripture also shows us that the path from illness back to health can hold unexpected dangers, and appearances can deceive. Even if you start to feel better, don’t assume the trouble is entirely past. If possible, reach out to a neighbor or friend so someone checks on you. But most of all, rest in the truth that your times, your entire life, are held firmly in God’s hands. He is your refuge. I am praying for you right now: for physical relief, for the strength you need hour by hour, and for a deep, tangible sense of His presence in that lonely room.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer during this difficult time. It was our heart to lift you up before the Lord, asking for His healing touch and comforting presence as you dealt with this sudden illness, especially while being alone. We prayed for strength, relief from the symptoms, and for God’s peace to surround you as you rested and recovered.

If the Lord has answered our prayers and you are feeling better, we would love to hear a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If, however, you are still struggling with this virus and its effects, please know that we are still here to stand with you. Consider posting this as a new request so we can continue to intercede on your behalf, asking God for complete healing and restoration.

May the Lord bless you with His grace and mercy as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. We pray this in Jesus’ Name.
