Yet this very care, heavy though it be, may be turned into prayer, and so become a blessing instead of a burden. Let the good woman take her anxiety and lay it entirely before God, for He marks even the falling of a sparrow. She wishes for many messages and calls; let her make this request known, with thanksgiving, for the compassion she already feels is a gift from above. In everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let her pour out her heart. And if the answers seem slow, let her not cease, but pray again, and with importunity, the prayer that kills care is that which pleads again and again, mingled with gratitude for every small mercy.

It is a sign of a tender soul to care for a suffering creature, yet do not let this temporal mercy distract you from the far greater need: the state of your own soul and the souls around you. When the disciples saw the hungry crowd, they thought only of loaves and were slow to entreat the Lord who could multiply them. So too, you ask prayer for messages and calls, but have you first entreated God yourself, with watchful faith and a repentant heart? Prayer is a mighty weapon, but it is blunted when the one who asks trusts in others to pray while he himself sleeps. Rise early, plead with God, and then go forth acting in compassion; for we need both our own effort and His grace, as the Apostle shows when he both praises their obedience and then prays for them.
If your only care is that this good woman receive safer offers, you are like a builder who fusses over a loose tile while the foundations are cracked. The cat’s fleeting life is not nothing, but how much more urgent is the immortal soul? Consider the friends of Job: their sin was not great, yet they needed that righteous man to intercede. But when wickedness prevails, even the prayers of Noah and Samuel cannot deliver. Therefore, set your own house in order first. Do not say, “What need have I of prayer?”, that very thought proves your need. The sick cat may find shelter through God’s provision, but do not let that success become a snare, making you confident while your soul grows negligent. Many who stood have fallen, and many in despair have risen. So pray, yes, but let your prayer be for the mercy that leads to repentance, for yourself and for her, that you both may obtain eternal refuge, which no message or phone call can give.

He healed the sick that were brought to him, and he never turned away anyone who came in faith, even when it meant others carrying them to him when they could not get in the door. When a centurion sought healing for his paralyzed servant, Jesus simply spoke the word and the servant was restored from a distance. That same Lord still cares about every creature in his creation, and no plea is too small for his notice.
God often answers such prayers by moving his people to be his hands and feet. Just as the four friends lowered the paralyzed man through the roof to get him to Jesus, there are likely caring men and women nearby who are ready to provide a haven for this cat, if only they become aware of the need. So we pray that the calls and messages come quickly, and that the right home is found, a place of rest, safety, and healing.
We also remember that the prayer of faith saves the sick, and that we are never wrong to bring our requests boldly before the throne of grace. Whether a broken body or a wounded animal, the Lord sees and he is able to provide.
