Crossing the Bridge Before You Come to It
Worrying about future troubles only steals today’s peace and strength for what may never come.
We join you in bringing this before the Lord and we understand how heavy social anxiety can feel, especially after a meaningful moment like saying goodbye to a dear friend before she goes abroad. We hear your heart, you wanted to honor your friendship and give her your well wishes, and she received it with a nod and a wave. That is a kind and positive response, and we encourage you not to let anxious thoughts rewrite what was a good goodbye into something negative.

The Lord knows our thoughts and our struggles with worry, and He invites us to bring every anxious thought to Him. We are reminded in Philippians 4:6-7 that in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. We also cling to 1 Peter 5:7 to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you, and to 2 Timothy 1:7 for God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. Jesus Himself offers this comfort in John 14:27, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. And we take comfort in Isaiah 41:10, Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you.

It is easy to overthink and wonder if someone is mad or annoyed when they are quiet, but often a nod and a wave simply means gratitude and perhaps her own emotions about leaving. A true friendship is not fragile, as Proverbs 17:17 tells us a friend loves at all times. We encourage you to rest in the goodness of what you did, you showed kindness and care, and to trust the Lord with the rest of this friendship.

We pray together for you now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus and we lift up our dear friend who is carrying this anxiety. We ask that You quiet the overthinking and the worry and replace it with Your perfect peace that guards heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Lord, calm the restless thoughts and help us to trust that You are in control of this friendship and of every goodbye and hello. We thank You for this friend who is going overseas, we ask for Your protection and blessing over her travels and her time abroad. We pray that You would keep this friendship in Your hands, and if it is Your will, provide a natural and peaceful opportunity to keep in touch, and let the next conversation be warm and encouraging and positive. Help our friend to not live in fear of being a burden but to walk in confidence knowing they are loved by You and valued. Give a sound mind and a steady heart, and remind us daily that You care deeply for us. We pray all of this in the precious name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to keep in touch with a simple, kind message when you feel led, without pressure on yourself for a perfect response, and to pray before you reach out, entrusting the outcome to the Lord. Your friendship will be okay as you rest it in His hands, and this anxiety does not define you. Keep seeking Jesus for your calm and peace, for He is faithful to give it.

We're grateful you reached out and told us about saying goodbye to your friend. It takes thoughtfulness to care that much and to want to honor her going abroad well.

It makes complete sense that your mind has kept replaying that last moment. When we value a friendship and know we won't see someone for a while, it's easy to read a lot into a quick nod or wave and wonder if we did something wrong, even when nothing went wrong at all. A brief goodbye often just means someone was processing a busy day or feeling distracted before travel, not that she was upset with you.

If you would like to keep in touch, one simple next step can help quiet the overthinking. Consider sending a short, warm message in the next day or two, something like wishing her safe travels and that you enjoyed catching up, without apologizing for the goodbye or asking her to reassure you. That keeps the door open kindly and gives her space to reply when she can.

We are praying for you and for your friendship.

Father, we bring our friend to You in Jesus' name. Please calm the racing thoughts and give steady peace in the days ahead. Help the friendship to stay connected in a healthy way, and give wisdom for the next conversation. Let Your presence be a comfort whether the reply comes quickly or takes time. Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your tender burden has been heard, and there is a word of the Lord that meets it directly, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

That perfect peace is not found in reading the countenance of another, nor in turning over again and again what was said or left unsaid at a parting. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, and that peace may be enjoyed even when duties press and when loved ones are far away, for in Jesus keeping we are safe, and they are safe also. It is a present possession, to be enjoyed in the ordinary circumstances of life, even with sorrows surging round.

You have found, as many have, that the very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. It is the mind which is the main thing, it will bring you daylight or midnight, peace or war. When the mind is stayed upon Christ, He keeps it in peace, peace. When it is stayed upon itself, upon what if she was annoyed, what if I misspoke, it wearies itself without cause.

Do not seek after peace first, seek after Christ first, and peace will come next. Christ has left us peace in the conscience. Peace with God is the fountain, and peace in the conscience is the crystal stream which issues from it. It is a peace which God the Father gives, for He is the God of all peace, it is a peace which Jesus Christ bought, for He has made peace by His blood and He is our peace, and it is a peace which the Holy Spirit works in the soul.

We pray for you that the Lord will bless you with this peace, not a mere lull of anxiety or blindness to danger, but the peace of God which passes all understanding. May He quiet the overthinking that so easily besets you, and keep your mind stayed upon Him. May He give you calm in remembering that a nod and a wave at a farewell, after a kind conversation and well wishes, is no sign of anger, and may He keep you from tormenting yourself with fears where there is no cause.

We pray also that if it be His will, He will give you opportunity to keep in touch with your friend before she goes overseas and afterwards, and that your friendship may be preserved in kindness and truth. And whether that next contact comes quickly or is delayed by distance, may you be kept in perfect peace, trusting that the Lord who watches over you watches over her also, and that your times and hers are in His hands.

Go in peace. Has He forgiven you, then you have peace. Has He saved you, then you have peace. Let your peace be like a river flowing from the very throne of God, and may the Spirit of God, the sacred Dove, brood over your heart till anxiety is stilled and trust is made perfect.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

I hear the weight you are carrying after that goodbye, and I thank you for sharing it so honestly. It is understandable to feel anxious when a conversation ends quietly and you are left wondering what the other person was thinking, especially when you care about the friendship and the moment felt important because she is going overseas.

What you describe, a kind farewell, well wishes given, a nod and a wave in return, sounds like a peaceful and respectful parting. A quiet response does not mean she was mad or annoyed. Often people are distracted or emotional before travel and have little to say, and it does not reflect any failure on your part. Much of this distress comes from the inner war of anxious thoughts, which can be more troubling than anything happening around us. Scripture calls us to seek a quiet and peaceable life in godliness, and that peace begins when the turmoil inside is brought to God in prayer.

True friendship, as Scripture teaches, is not built on one moment or on perfect words, but on steady care for one another over time. It endures through changes and distance. A friendship rooted in virtue and kindness is not easily broken by a brief goodbye.

So let us pray for the peace you asked for, and for wisdom in how you keep in touch.

Heavenly Father, I bring this dear one before You. You know the anxiety and overthinking that has followed this goodbye. I ask that You calm this troubled heart and grant Your peace that passes all understanding to guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Help this worry to be replaced by trust in You. I pray that You would watch over this friendship, that if it is Your will, You would provide a natural and gracious opportunity to keep in touch, and that communication would be received with kindness. Above all, teach us to find our deepest friendship and security in You, for You have called us friends when we follow You, and You desire that friendship more than we do. Help us to call upon You from a pure heart and to rest in Your care, knowing that You are near to all who call upon You in truth. Grant calm, clear thoughts, freedom from fear, and confidence that You hold both this person and this friendship in Your hands. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Continue to bring these worries to the Lord each time they rise, with thanksgiving, and ask Him to help you see the situation clearly. When you do reach out to your friend, do so simply and kindly, without pressure for a particular response, and then entrust the outcome to God. He is able to keep you in perfect peace as you keep your mind stayed on Him, and He will sustain you whether the reply comes quickly or slowly.
