Sober

We join with you in this desire for sobriety and we thank you for your honesty in bringing this before the Lord. We know God hears a humble and repentant heart and He is faithful to give strength to overcome.

The Word calls us to be sober minded and to honor God with our bodies. We are reminded in 1 Peter 5:8 to be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. And in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 we read, Or don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. Smoking weed dulls the mind, weakens self-control, and opens a door to spiritual and physical harm. It is not God's best for you, and we gently rebuke any reliance on it for peace, escape, or comfort, because true peace only comes from Christ. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control as it says in 2 Timothy 1:7.

We also want to lovingly point out that your request did not mention the name of Jesus. We want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through His name that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your faith in Jesus Christ, confess your sins, believe that He died and rose again for you, and ask Him to be Lord of your life. He is the one who can truly set you free.

We want to encourage you with the promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. God will make a way out for you every time temptation comes. And in Galatians 5:22-23 we see that self-control is fruit of the Spirit, which grows as we walk closely with Him. You can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you according to Philippians 4:13. You are not fighting this in your own strength.

We encourage you to take practical steps in repentance and wisdom. Remove any weed, paraphernalia, and contacts that tempt you, avoid places and friendships that pull you back, and fill that space with the Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers who will hold you accountable. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind as Romans 12:2 teaches, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. When cravings come, pray immediately, speak Scripture aloud, and call a trusted Christian brother or sister.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that You love us and that You desire us to be holy and sober and free. We confess that dependence on weed has not glorified You and we ask for Your forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. Lord, we ask You to break every chain of addiction and every craving for weed. Fill this heart with Your Holy Spirit, with Your peace and power and self-control. Give a hatred for what harms the temple of the Holy Spirit and give a deep hunger for Your Word and Your presence. When temptation comes, show the way of escape and give courage to take it. Surround this dear one with godly counsel and accountability and strengthen them day by day to walk in freedom. We declare that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Help them to live soberly, righteously, and to glorify You in body and spirit. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you reaching out so honestly. Wanting to be done with weed for good takes real courage, and we are with you in that desire.

We know this kind of struggle touches more than willpower. It can affect your body, your thought patterns, your friendships and routines, and your walk with God, so lasting change usually needs support on all those levels. Isolation makes it harder, and having even one steady, trusted community makes it more sustainable.

One practical step that helps many people is to not try to do this alone. If you can, identify one safe person to check in with regularly this week, whether a pastor, a counselor, or a recovery group in your area. Many churches offer Celebrate Recovery and other groups where people find sponsors and daily encouragement. Clearing out anything that makes it easy to use and planning what you will do when a craving hits can also give you space to choose differently.

If you notice strong cravings, sleep changes, or mood shifts as you stop, it is wise to talk with a medical professional or counselor as well as praying through it.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Thank You for his honest heart to turn away from weed. Give him strength for each day, surround him with people who will help him up when he stumbles, and remind him he is loved and not condemned in Christ. Lead him step by step toward freedom and wholeness. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is great mercy in your honest prayer for sobriety, and we thank God that He has stirred in you this desire to be free. When conscience pricks us after we have fallen or been overtaken by temptation, to fall upon our knees and confess our fault is itself a work of grace, and it is never in vain.

You must not listen to that most Satanic suggestion which whispers that your prayer will not be heard, that God's ear is shut against you, or that deliverance is impossible for one who has struggled again and again. That arrow is often shot at the tempted soul, but it is a lie. Our God has not only invented a way of deliverance, He has found a ransom. In the Lord Jesus Christ, His own Son has borne the penalty of our iniquities, so that when He proclaims, I have found a ransom, your deliverance is certain, for it is already accomplished at the cross. Deborah sang of deliverance from earthly enemies, but we have a greater salvation, deliverance from worse enemies, from sin and its dominion.

Know this, deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. You cannot by your own resolve alone keep yourself, and you need not despair because you feel you can do nothing. He feels that if he ever rises, it must be of free grace only, and that is true. He brought them forth. He makes deliverance effectual. He not only forgives, He brings forth with strength, so that there was not one feeble person among them. What He requires of you is hearty assent and consent to His salvation, to look to your heavenly Father altogether and alone for sanctification as well as for justification.

Therefore we will pray for you, and we urge you to pray daily in the very words our Lord taught us, Lead us not into temptation. That prayer owns that temptation in itself is dangerous, and asks God to keep us from the mischief of it, to keep our garments unstained and our feet from slipping. And he who prays that prayer sincerely must not then walk willingly into temptation. Never go into temptation. Flee the places, the company, the idle hours, the provision for the flesh that have ensnared you before. If you know where temptation is to be found, turn from it and ask the Lord to set a guard about your steps.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord our God, who has found a ransom for sinners going down to the pit, look in mercy upon this soul who desires to be sober and to smoke no more. Thou knowest the power of habit and the subtlety of the tempter. Forgive what is past through the blood of the Lamb slain, and now bring forth this one from captivity by Thine own hand. Deliver from the power of darkness and translate into the kingdom of Thy dear Son. Keep from the hour of temptation, and when tried, make a way of escape that there may be strength to bear it and to stand fast. Fill the heart with Thy Spirit, that heavenly silver and gold may be sought more earnestly than any fleeting relief the flesh can offer. Grant health and strength to walk in newness of life, and give a song of deliverance, that this life may yet declare the works of the Lord. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our sure deliverance. Amen.

Be of good courage. He who has begun this good work is able to keep you. If you fall under the weight of craving, confess it at once and return to the fountain. If you are kept, give Him all the glory. We will continue to bear you up before the throne, that you may live and declare what the Lord has done.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
