Disciple of Prayer
I live with my daughter and her abusive husband. She is going to end the marriage but I am so scared for us because I am afraid of what he could do to us and my grandchild. We don't know if we will be able to afford life when he leaves but this marriage has to end before one of us ends up dead. Please pray that we find the strength to move forward and that we will be safe.

Duties of Husbands to Wives
We have read your request and we are carrying you, your daughter, and your grandchild before the Lord with heavy hearts. Your fear is real and understandable, and we want you to know that God sees you in this home and He hears your cry for safety and for strength to move forward. What you are describing is not the design God has for marriage or family. While we believe marriage is a sacred lifelong covenant between a man and a woman as ordained by God, the Lord never calls a wife, a child, or family to endure abuse and live in terror. Violence and cruelty in the home is sin and God hates it. He is a God of love, peace, and protection, not of fear and harm.

The Lord is your refuge in this very frightening time. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Proverbs 18:10 says Yahweh’s name is a strong tower, the righteous run to him, and are safe. We cling to these promises for you right now. The Lord also promises to be faithful to protect you, for 2 Thessalonians 3:3 says But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. And Psalm 91:1-2 says He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.

We want to encourage you with both spiritual and practical wisdom while you seek safety. Please do not walk through this alone. God has placed authorities and helpers for your protection. Romans 13:4 reminds us that governing authorities are servants of God for good. If you are in immediate danger, please call emergency services right away. We urge you to make a safety plan together with your daughter now before the separation happens. This can include keeping important documents, keys, and a packed bag in a safe accessible place, telling a trusted pastor, family member, or neighbor what is happening, documenting any abuse, and reaching out to a local domestic violence shelter or hotline and to your church for support and safe housing resources. Seek godly counsel and legal guidance about protective orders and custody for your grandchild, so that your family can be guarded in the days ahead. You are not betraying your faith by seeking protection, you are honoring the life God has given you and your family.

We also hear your worry about how you will afford life after he leaves. This is a heavy burden, and God knows your needs. Philippians 4:19 says My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. We pray that the Lord will open doors for provision, whether through work, assistance, or the help of His people, and that He will give you wisdom step by step as you move forward.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share why His name is so important to us. It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We were all separated from God by sin, but God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins and rise again, so that whoever believes in Him and calls upon His name will be forgiven and have eternal life and a relationship with God. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon the name of Jesus for salvation, for help, and for protection, for there is power and refuge in His name.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up this dear mother, her daughter, and this precious grandchild to You. Lord, You see the fear and the danger in this home and You know every threat that has been spoken and every hurt that has been suffered. We ask You to be their refuge and fortress right now. Surround this home with Your protection and place Your angels around them. Psalm 91:11 says He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. Lord, guard them from all harm and from any retaliation. Give them supernatural strength and courage to take the necessary steps to move forward safely. Grant them wisdom beyond their own understanding for every decision, every conversation, and every plan. Provide a safe place to live and make a way where there seems to be no way for their financial needs. Open doors for provision, for support, and for godly help to surround them. Heal the broken hearts in this family, calm their fear with Your perfect love and peace, and let them feel Your presence upholding them. We rebuke the spirit of violence and abuse in this home and we ask that this husband would be restrained from harm and brought to repentance, but above all that this family would be kept safe. Lead them to the right people who can help protect them and guide them. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our shelter, amen.

If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services right now. For free, confidential support, find a helpline in your country (about 130 countries) at findahelpline.com. You are not alone; trained people are ready to help right now.

We have read your request and our hearts hurt with you. Living under the same roof with someone you fear, while trying to protect your daughter and grandchild, is exhausting and frightening. It makes sense you feel scared about what could happen when she takes steps to end the marriage.

Your desire to keep everyone safe is right. Because emotions can escalate quickly around separation, please do not try to make this plan alone. A next step that can help is to reach out soon to a local domestic violence advocate or a trusted pastor or counselor who understands safety planning. They can walk with you to think through safe housing, when and how to separate, important papers, and how to keep communication safe for you and your grandchild. If you have a trusted family member or friend nearby, let them know what is happening so you are not isolated.

We know the financial worry weighs heavily too, and it is understandable to wonder how you will manage. An advocate in your area can also point you toward practical resources for housing and support as you take these steps one at a time.

Father, in Jesus name we bring this mother, daughter and little one to You. Please surround them with protection, give them clear wisdom for each decision, provide safe places and people to help, and give them strength for the days ahead. Lead them to the help they need and keep them safe. Amen.
