Proverbs 14:13. ESV Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief

We hear the weight of your heart in this cry against the twisted joy some take in the suffering of others—a mocking spirit that spreads like a plague through disrespect, bullying, and the glorification of another’s ruin. This is not of God, but of the enemy, who delights in turning laughter into a weapon and smiles into instruments of torment. The Scripture you reference in Proverbs 14:13 (WEB) reminds us: *"Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful, and mirth may end in heaviness."* How true this is when joy is perverted into cruelty, and smiles become masks for malice.

This spirit of mockery and discord is demonic, a corruption of the godly joy that should mark believers. The apostle Paul warns in Ephesians 5:4 (WEB): *"Let there be no filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate; but rather giving of thanks."* Jesting that tears down, that spreads contempt, or that revels in another’s pain is an abomination before the Lord. It is the spirit of the scoffer, which Proverbs 22:10 (WEB) commands us to *"cast out"*—for it brings strife, shame, and destruction.

We rebuke this spirit of malicious laughter, this demonic glee in another’s suffering, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Every smile twisted into a tool of bullying, every photo shared to humiliate, every word spoken to belittle—we bind these works of darkness and command them to cease. The Lord does not delight in the ruin of His creation, but in redemption, restoration, and righteousness. Psalm 1:1 (WEB) declares, *"Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers."* Scoffers and mockers will not inherit the kingdom of God, but those who walk in humility, love, and reverence for the Lord will be lifted up.

We pray now with authority and fervor:

*"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, the One who has overcome the world and all its darkness. We lift up this cry against the spirit of mockery, cruelty, and malicious joy that has infected hearts and spread like a cancer through words, images, and deeds. Lord, You are a God of justice, and You despise the proud and the scornful. We ask You to expose every hidden motive, every wicked delight in another’s pain. Break the power of this demonic stronghold in neighborhoods, in schools, in workplaces, and in the digital spaces where contempt is sowed like seed.

We rebuke every spirit that twists laughter into torment, that turns smiles into weapons, and that spreads discord through disrespect and bullying. By the blood of Jesus, we command these spirits to be bound and cast out. Replace them, Lord, with the fruit of Your Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Let those who have been caught in this snare of cruelty be convicted by Your Holy Spirit. Softens their hearts, Lord, and turn their mockery into repentance, their scorn into sorrow for sin.

For those who have been wounded by this spirit—those who have been bullied, humiliated, or made to feel worthless—we ask for Your healing balm. Comfort them, Father, and remind them that their worth is found in You alone. Let them know that You see their tears, You hear their cries, and You will vindicate the righteous. Surround them with godly community that builds up rather than tears down.

We declare that no weapon formed against Your people shall prosper. Every tongue that rises against them in judgment, You shall condemn. Raise up warriors of prayer, Lord, who will stand in the gap against this spirit of mockery. Let Your light expose every dark corner where this evil lurks.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we take authority over this spirit of tormenting laughter. We command it to flee, to be silenced, and to be replaced with the genuine joy of the Lord, which is our strength. Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in every heart, every home, and every place where this darkness has taken root.

We thank You, Father, for Your victory. We trust in Your power to break every chain and set the captives free. May Your name be glorified as You turn mourning into dancing and ashes into beauty. In Jesus’ mighty and holy name, we pray. Amen."*

To those who have been affected by this spirit of mockery: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). The Lord is your defender, and He will not allow the wicked to triumph forever. Cling to Him, and let His truth be your shield. If you have participated in this cruelty, repent now—turn away from these sins and seek the Lord’s forgiveness. He is faithful to cleanse you and restore you if you come to Him with a contrite heart.

Finally, remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Stand firm in the Lord, and do not give the enemy a foothold. Let your words and actions reflect the love of Christ, who came not to condemn, but to save.

We hear your cry against the twisted joy that some find in the suffering of others. It's heartbreaking to see laughter turned into a weapon, smiles used to mask malice, and joy perverted into cruelty. This is not the joy that God intends for us, but a counterfeit spirit that seeks to bring harm and discord. We stand with you in rebuking this demonic spirit, binding it and commanding it to cease in Jesus' mighty name.

Let's pray together:

Replace them, Lord, with the fruit of Your Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. For those who have been wounded by this spirit - those who have been bullied, humiliated, or made to feel worthless - we ask for Your healing balm. Comfort them, Father, and remind them that their worth is found in You alone. Let them know that You see their tears, You hear their cries, and You will vindicate the righteous.
