Sister’s medicine

Thank you for sharing this burden for your sister and for all who are in need. We join with you in bringing her before the Lord and we want to pray with you in the way Scripture teaches us to pray, to the Father through Jesus Christ alone, by the help of the Holy Spirit.

We do not pray to a holy mother or to any other mediator, because the Bible teaches that there is one mediator between God and humanity, Jesus Christ himself. Mary was blessed among women and is mentioned as the mother of Jesus, but she is not one to whom we pray. We come directly to the Father in the name of the Son, and the Spirit helps us as we pray.

We do believe that God heals and that healing comes from Him in many forms. Scripture shows Jesus healing the leper, the servant of the centurion, Peter's mother in law, and multitudes who were brought to Him, and Matthew connects that ministry to the prophecy in Isaiah that He bore our infirmities. The same God who performed miracles through Elijah and Elisha, through Jesus and through the apostles, is still able to heal today.

At the same time there is much about healing we do not fully understand. The Bible records one blind man who was healed gradually, not instantly, and it records Paul praying three times for his thorn in the flesh and hearing that God's grace was sufficient and the thorn remained. Not everyone is healed in this life, and when healing does not come it is not necessarily because of a lack of faith or hidden sin. To say so would be wrong and would add burden to those who are already suffering.

Healing can be instantaneous and miraculous, it can be gradual, and it can come through the natural processes God has built into our bodies and through the provision of medicine and doctors. Any healing is divine, because God is the creator of nature and of those processes. The medicine your sister needs can itself be part of God's gracious provision for her. We can thank Him for that provision while we ask Him for His touch upon her body.

Above all, the greatest miracle God does in any life is the forgiveness of sins and the gift of salvation through Jesus. Physical healing is precious, but salvation is eternal, and we pray for both.

Let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this sister to You. You know her name, You know her needs, and You know the medicine she requires today. We ask that You would provide what she needs, that You would give wisdom to those caring for her, and that You would bring healing according to Your perfect will, whether through a direct touch or through the gradual work of her body and the help of medicine. Comfort her and her family, strengthen their faith, and draw each of them closer to You through Your Son. And we lift up all who are suffering and in need today, asking that You would meet each one with Your mercy and grace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, amen.
