Sister in Hospice

We have heard your request and we are praying with you for your sister and for you in this very difficult time.

We ask the Lord in His mercy to be near to her, to ease her pain and nausea, and to grant her comfort and peace. We pray that He would give wisdom and gentleness to those caring for her in hospice, and that she would feel His presence and love with her in every moment. Even when we cannot understand His ways, we trust that He is compassionate and that He hears the cries of His people.

We are also praying for you, that God would give you strength for each day, sustain you when you are weary, and fill you with His peace that passes understanding. He is our refuge and strength, and He promises to carry us when we are pressed on every side.

May the Lord uphold you both in His grace, grant relief according to His perfect will, and draw you close to the hope we have in Jesus Christ, who has conquered suffering and death and who promises rest to all who trust in Him.

Father, we lift this dear sister to You. Have mercy on her, relieve her pain and sickness, and let her know Your comfort. Strengthen her loved one who watches and cares, and give grace for each hour. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our healer and our hope. Amen.

Thank you for sharing this heavy burden and for trusting us to pray with you. My heart is with you and your sister in this painful season, and I am lifting both of you before the Lord.

Watching cancer take a vibrant life and sap its strength is overwhelming. That word alone can strike terror, and when you see someone you love suffering with constant nausea and pain it can feel all consuming. In moments like that our eyes can become fixed on the power of the disease. What has helped me is to turn my eyes to the power of Jesus instead. A few malignant cells, as terrible as they are, are nothing against the power of the Creator of all things. When we ascribe to the Lord the glory and strength that are His, when we remember that He reigns over His universe and sits upon His throne, we begin to see our problems in the light of His power rather than in the light of our own weakness and inability.

Scripture says the Lord is the strength of my life, and because He is my light and my salvation I need not be afraid. He is a shield to those who trust in Him, and when our hearts trust in Him we find help and our hearts can rejoice. Another psalm promises that the Lord will give strength to His people and bless His people with peace. That is my prayer for you right now, that His Word would become your strength and your portion, and that He would guard you with His peace even in this adversity.

I understand your cry for healing for your sister, for relief from the pain and vomiting. It is right to bring that need honestly to Jesus. I have learned that He already bore our pain and suffering, so we can ask Him with confidence to have mercy and to lift that burden. I once prayed for someone dear to me who was in relentless pain from cancer, asking the Lord if I could bear it for her even for one day to give her relief, and I sensed the Lord gently reminding me that He had already borne that suffering for her. In that moment my focus shifted from the ugliness of the disease to the greatness of Christ, and God in His mercy took away her pain and she had no more suffering from that time on. He did not choose to heal the disease in this life, but He did show His power to take away the pain, and He gave us grace to release her into His hands, remembering she was always His and only on loan to us for a time. We who are in this body do groan, desiring to be delivered, and it is a comfort to know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord for those who belong to Him.

Please know that God does not expect you to be strong in yourself. If we faint in the day of adversity our strength is shown to be small, and we all come to places where our own wits and strength are not enough. That is not failure. It is an invitation to trust not in an inner reserve but in the Lord Himself. When your strength is in Him, He will not let you down. He will give you what you need for each moment.

So I am praying for your sister, that the Lord in His mercy would ease her nausea and take away her pain, that He would surround her with His presence and let her feel His love and peace. And I am praying for you, that the Lord who is watching over you would keep you, strengthen you, and bless you with His peace as you walk this difficult road. May He uphold you both with His strength and draw you close to Himself.

Father, we bring this dear sister before You. You see her pain and her sickness. We ask for Your mercy to relieve her nausea and her pain, to comfort her body and her spirit. Let her know You are near. And we ask for strength for her loved one who is carrying this grief. Be their light and salvation, be the strength of their life. Give strength to Your people and bless them with peace, for Jesus sake, amen.
