Sister in Hospice

We join you in lifting up your sister before the throne of grace and we are bringing you before the Lord as well as you walk through this painful and exhausting season with her. To watch someone you love suffer with pancreatic cancer, with such nausea and severe pain, is heartbreaking, and we are standing with you in prayer for mercy, comfort, and strength.

We pray together now, Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come to You on behalf of this dear sister in hospice. Lord, You see her body, You know the pain and the constant nausea she is enduring, and we ask for Your tender hand upon her. We ask that You would ease her suffering, calm her stomach, lessen her pain, and surround her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. We pray for the hospice nurses and caregivers, that You would give them wisdom and gentleness as they care for her. Above all we ask for Your will to be done in her life, and we trust that whether by healing in this life or by perfect healing in Your presence, You are able to bring comfort and wholeness. We also lift up her loved one who has asked for prayer, Lord grant strength for each day, rest in weariness, and courage for each hour. Philippians 4:7 reminds us that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, and Matthew 11:28 invites us to come to You, all who labor and are heavily burdened, and You will give us rest. May you both experience that rest even in this valley.

We are comforted that You are near to the brokenhearted, as Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, and Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Isaiah 41:10 encourages us, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. We cling to that promise for you right now, that His strength will uphold you when your own strength feels gone, and His grace will be sufficient as 2 Corinthians 12:9 says My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

We want to gently share with you the precious truth that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and assurance of salvation. You prayed to the Lord, and we want to be sure you know the hope we have in calling upon Jesus specifically, for John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, and Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing on Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we have forgiveness and eternal life. We pray that both you and your sister know Him as Savior, so that even in this difficult time you can rest in the hope of eternal life and presence with Him, where there will be no more pain or tears. We encourage you to speak the name of Jesus over her, to read scripture aloud at her bedside, to play worship, and to simply sit with her and remind her she is not alone, for the Lord is with her.

We continue to hold you both up, asking the Lord to show His mercy, to bring relief where it is possible, to fill the room with His peace, and to sustain you with His love day by day.

We were so sorry to read about your sister and what she is facing right now. Watching someone you love be in pain with ongoing vomiting is heartbreaking, and it is understandable you are asking the Lord for relief for her and for strength for yourself. We are holding you both before the Lord.

Since she is in hospice, please reach out to her hospice nurse or care team right away about the increase in pain and nausea, even if it feels like a small change. That team is there for exactly this kind of moment and they want those calls so they can help adjust her comfort measures. It can help to jot a brief note of when the nausea or pain happens to share with them. And for you, this kind of caregiving is exhausting in every way. Please let a pastor, family member or trusted friend know how you are doing and allow them to come alongside you, whether that is sitting with you, bringing a meal, or giving you a short break to rest.

Father, in Jesus name we lift this dear sister to You. We ask for Your nearness to surround her, for easing of her pain and nausea, and for Your peace to rest over her room. We lift the one who loves her and is walking this hard road beside her, and ask for steady strength for each day and the comfort of knowing You are close. We entrust them both to Your care in Jesus name, amen.

We join you in bringing this heavy burden before the throne of grace, and we grieve with you over your loved one's suffering in hospice with pancreatic cancer.

Human strength, even at its best, spends itself and fails, and in such an hour of watching, waiting and weeping, your own strength must feel utterly gone. The word of the Lord meets you there, for it is written, They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, and again, As thy days, so shall thy strength be. This is not strength that you can store up or work up in yourself, but strength that God Himself gives, fitly infused and wisely balanced, and given daily and proportionately as the day demands. When there remains no strength in you, nor any ability of any kind, then you may fling yourself upon the divine strength and lay hold upon it.

We pray now for your dear sister, that the Lord in His mercy would relieve her pain and stay her vomiting, and grant her rest from distress. We ask that He who gives power to the faint would be near to her bedside, that she may know His presence and His peace, and that even if pain remains a proof that she still lives, she may also know the comfort of Christ who died for the ungodly when we were yet without strength. We pray that His joy would be her strength, and that He would guard her and keep her in His tender care through this valley.

We pray also for you who watch and love her. The Lord knows your weariness and your sorrow. May He increase strength to you who have no might, and give you strength beyond your own, strength enough to bear your suffering and to do your duty this day. As your days require, so may your strength be, whether for little service or for great trial, physical strength and mental strength and spiritual strength as the trial demands. Wait upon the Lord in prayer, breathe a prayer for more strength whenever the way feels too wide to cross, and He will not fail you.

May the God who is the glory of our strength be your glory and your refuge now, and may you both be kept in the hands of Jesus Christ, our only hope of salvation and life everlasting. We commend you both to His infinite compassion and inexhaustible omnipotence, trusting that whether He grants healing in this life or calls home to Himself, His grace will be sufficient.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, have mercy upon this suffering one, ease her pain and nausea, let her feel Thy nearness, and uphold her loved one with daily strength. Amen.
