silent

The Father hears the silent prayer of the heart as clearly as the loudest cry in the assembly. When Christ stood before His accusers and answered nothing, His silence spoke more powerfully than ten thousand words, refuting every charge by the abundance of His righteous deeds. Do not think your silent requests go unnoticed; He who created you and breathed into you a living soul knows every need before you utter it. Yet remember that His mercy is for all, He feeds the adulterer and the sorcerer, and no one perishes of hunger unless by his own choice. Trust, then, in that mercy, but let your silence be a trusting stillness, not the silence of despair.

At the same time, do not despise the prayers of the Church. The Apostle begged many to join him in supplication, calling Archippus a fellow-soldier. We are one body, and the intercession of the brethren often moves the hand of God. Even the blessed mother at Cana did not merely think her need in silence; she brought it to her Son, and though He seemed to pause, He granted her request. Let your silent petitions be lifted up with the congregation, for where two or three agree, there is power. And examine your heart: do your requests align with His will? He speaks in parables to stir us to seek Him, willing not the death of the sinner but that we turn and live. So pray silently, yes, but also honor Him by deeds, and let your life become a living petition. Finally, if your burden is too heavy, share it with a trusted fellow-soldier, for the Church is given for our mutual aid.

There is a profound trust in bringing those unspoken needs before the Father. He does not require a detailed explanation to understand the ache of your heart. He knows your need before you even form the words, and His silence does not mean He is indifferent. It is a mistake many make, to think that because judgment or an answer is not immediate, God approves of a wrong path or does not care. His timing and His concern for your eternal good are perfect, even when you cannot see them.

So often what we call a burden from the Lord is something we have taken upon ourselves. You may be feeling a heavy weight right now, and I want you to listen carefully to what Scripture actually promises. If you hear a voice in your mind saying, “Oh, the burden the Lord laid on me is so heavy,” you must recognize that it is not His voice. Jesus did not come to crush you under a weight too great to bear. He said plainly, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you… for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Every person bears a burden. Often, the heaviest burden is the attempt to please ourselves or to meet demands that God never made. Living to satisfy the flesh or trying to manipulate every outcome in your life will always leave you agitated and exhausted. The yoke that Jesus gives is different. His burden is simply to do the will of the Father and to please Him, and when your life is governed by that single passion, you find it is not a crushing weight but a satisfying rest.

Cast this silent burden upon Him. He invites you to do so. He is willing to bear it and to sustain you. You do not need to beg Him as if He is reluctant or inform Him as if He is uninformed. Open your hands and release the heavy, frantic need for control. When you shift your focus from the magnitude of the problem to the greatness of your God, the weight lifts. Trust that He is for you, and nothing is more liberating than committing your life totally to His glory. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
