Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
The Father hears the silent prayer of the heart as clearly as the loudest cry in the assembly. When Christ stood before His accusers and answered nothing, His silence spoke more powerfully than ten thousand words, refuting every charge by the abundance of His righteous deeds. Do not think your silent requests go unnoticed; He who created you and breathed into you a living soul knows every need before you utter it. Yet remember that His mercy is for all, He feeds the adulterer and the sorcerer, and no one perishes of hunger unless by his own choice. Trust, then, in that mercy, but let your silence be a trusting stillness, not the silence of despair.
At the same time, do not despise the prayers of the Church. The Apostle begged many to join him in supplication, calling Archippus a fellow-soldier. We are one body, and the intercession of the brethren often moves the hand of God. Even the blessed mother at Cana did not merely think her need in silence; she brought it to her Son, and though He seemed to pause, He granted her request. Let your silent petitions be lifted up with the congregation, for where two or three agree, there is power. And examine your heart: do your requests align with His will? He speaks in parables to stir us to seek Him, willing not the death of the sinner but that we turn and live. So pray silently, yes, but also honor Him by deeds, and let your life become a living petition. Finally, if your burden is too heavy, share it with a trusted fellow-soldier, for the Church is given for our mutual aid.
