God hears the prayers that are offered in silence, even when no words are spoken out loud. You do not need many words or a long time on your knees for prayer to be real and to be heard. Many of the prayers recorded in Scripture are very short, and the Lord looks at the heart and at faith, not at length or eloquence.
There is an example in Scripture of a man who stood before a king and needed help in that very moment. He could not kneel or speak out loud, so in his heart he lifted a quick, silent prayer to God for favor, and God answered him. In the same way, when you offer a silent prayer in the name of Jesus, God knows exactly what you mean. There are times when prayer is not even formed into spoken words but is simply in the mind and heart, a cry for guidance or help, and His Spirit meets you there with assurance and comfort.
It helps to remember who you are addressing. Prayer is speaking to the Father, through Jesus Christ. When you have received Jesus and have that relationship as His child, you can come and call Him Father. That relationship is what opens the way for prayer. If that relationship is not yet settled, the first prayer God desires to hear is, God be merciful to me, a sinner, trusting in Jesus alone for salvation. Through Him alone the way is opened.
Prayer also has different parts. It is worship, as you recognize the greatness and goodness of God. It is petition, as you bring your own needs before Him. And it is intercession, as you bring the needs of others and of the world before Him. All of that can happen even in a silent prayer. Your Father already knows what you need before you ask, but in prayer you open the door and give consent for Him to do what He has been wanting to do in your life.
The main purpose of prayer is not to get our own wishes granted, but to see His will done on earth as it is in heaven. It is right to tell Him your needs, and He invites you to do so, yet the deepest thrust of prayer is Thy will be done. Prayer begins with God, He puts His desires in your heart, you speak them back to Him, and He then works to accomplish them. It ends as it begins, with His is the kingdom and the power and the glory.
Be encouraged that your silent prayer in Jesus name is heard. The earnest, heartfelt prayer of one who walks rightly before God is powerful and effective, not because of many words, but because God is gracious and faithful to answer according to His perfect will.
I join you in prayer now, that the Father would hear what is on your heart even in silence, that He would work according to His will, grant you peace and assurance, provide for your needs, and draw you closer to Himself. May you experience the joy of knowing He has heard and is at work. In Jesus name, amen.
