Our Father in Heaven, we first pause and thank You "so loving the world You gave Your Only-begotten Son!, Jn 3:16. Thank You "Jesus showed us The Father -- Your Nature," Jn 14:9. Mostly the POWER to live a Holy Life overflowing with LOVE for God and others, singing and making melody from "singing seminaries" and "the walking practice of evangelism" is the best fruit and sign of the Kingdom, Heb 12:4. ***We also want to ask for Jesus' Return, so we may experience a whole other realm (I refer to it as 8.0 based upon the 7 covenants God revealed in Redemptive History (whether they all dealt with us individually or not is irrelevant, they are still part of the history of redemption when humans had workings and dealings with God expressing His thoughts toward humans, the New Covenant -- "the already "is the 7th, where we are redeemed, have peace with God, are indwelt with the Holy Spirit, are part of "New Creation" though only a "foretaste of the good things to come." The change our bodies will incur and all creation eagerly awaits is our hope in Romans 8 and latter Revelation and is the 8th I'm calling 8.0 where ALL of these things will be realized in a greater capacity and duration and God's Kingdom will have full expression once it's fully come on earth as it is heaven again -- the "not yet," -- "May Your Kingdom Come and Your Will be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven," Matt 6:10.

May Your Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven -- Keeping in mind the Kingdom Coming, as described above, in differing degrees, the already and the not yet, we ask here in the already that we may know, submit to and do Your will for our lives individually and collectively as the church, as Jesus did during His time on earth, Phil 2:9-9, our whole lives be increasingly lived to please You, knowing the Trinity, living in Your presence moment by moment, and making You known as a by product, rejoicing in trials and weakness, as well as power demonstrations when it gives You glory, Mt 28:19-20, Rom 1:5, Rom 15:18. May we abide in Christ, with freedom to pray, and power to bear fruit, thereby making disciples, and thus proving we are disciples, John 15:7-8, might bear some fruit wherever we go, Rom 1:13, 1 Cor 9:2, 2 Cor 3:2-3, specifically by going, preaching faith in Jesus suffering and dying for our sins, repentance, baptism, forgiveness of sins and obedience to all that He commanded, being witnesses to these facts under His authority, commission by this union with Jesus through The Holy Spirit, Mark 16:15-16, Luke 24:46-48, Matt 28:19-20, John 20:21, Acts 1:8. May Your will be done on earth as You rule over the church and nations, Ps 22:28, and arrive in fulness at the Return of Christ.

Give us Each Day our Daily Bread: Spiritual -- we can't live by bread alone but every Word of God, Deut 8:3, Matt 4:4, Lk 4:4. Meet our spiritual, emotional, social, physical and financial needs mightily, Phil 4:19, so we can love You with all our heart, soul, mind, will, emotions, physical strength and finances, Mk 12:30, and our neighbors, Mk 12:31, even the lost, Matt 9:36, and even enemies, Matt 5:44, as ourselves -- and see others as Christ, who looked beyond his own interests, to the interests of others, considering others as more important than we, Phil 2:1-5.

Forgive Our Debts as We Forgive Our Debtors... We confess we've sinned against You, Rom 3:23, 1 Jn 1:8, 1 Jn 1:10 (name specific sins and areas of ongoing struggles), and others, receive forgiveness, Lk 1:77, & pray FOR those who sin against us, (by name and specific offenses), asking they'd repent and be saved, Job 42:7-16, entrusting their souls to a faithful creator and recognizing it is He who alone who is in fact the one appointed both to save and to judge, Romans 12:9, 1 Pet 4:19.

Lead us Not into Temptation, but Deliver us from evil... Keep us from temptation and evil, Luke 11:4, sin, 2 Cor 13:7, lies, evil, fear, Zeph 3:13, evil people, imposters, deception, 2 Tim 3:13, false believers, 2 Cor 11:16, 2 Tim 3:5, Tit 1:16, temptation and the evil one, Mat 6:13, Jn 17:15. Give us angelic protection, Ps 91:10-11, Heb 1:14.

For It's Your Kingdom, (Everlasting Kingdom which Cannot Be Destroyed, Dan 7:18), It's Your Power, (All Power in Heaven and Earth has been Given to Me, Matt 28:18), and Your Glory, Forever... (Not unto us O Lord, but unto Your Name Be Glory, Ps 115:1)... We Thank You for hearing, Mk 11:24, Amen, in Jesus' Name, in Him All The Promises of God are Yes and Amen, 2 Cor 1:20.

We join together with you in thanking our Father for the beautiful pattern Jesus gave us for prayer and we rejoice that you have taken it to heart not as empty words to be mindlessly repeated but as a living outline to seek Him first and to align our hearts with His will.

Jesus said Pray like this in Matthew 6:9-13 and He also warned us in Matthew 6:7 not to use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do, for true prayer is not a formula but fellowship with the Father through the Son. We are grateful you have emphasized that it is to be prayed with understanding and with fervor, for the effective prayer of a righteous person can accomplish much in James 5:16. We also join you in remembering the priority Jesus set when He said But seek first Gods Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well in Matthew 6:33. When we put the Father and His honor first, His Kingdom and His will before our own needs, our prayers come into proper order.

We love how you have divided this prayer as Jesus did, first concerning the Father and then concerning us. Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name reminds us that through faith in Jesus we have been adopted as children of God. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son in John 3:16 and as many as received him to them he gave the right to become Gods children in John 1:12, so that because we are children God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts crying Abba Father in Galatians 4:6. Even Jesus in His hour of deepest need cried Abba Father in Mark 14:36, and we too may draw near with that same intimacy, yet with reverence, for His name is gracious and compassionate in Exodus 34:6 and is not to be taken in vain in Exodus 20:7. May our lives cause His name to be honored and not blasphemed among others as warned in Romans 2:24, and we long with you for the day when the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea in Habakkuk 2:14 and every knee will bow at the name of Jesus in Philippians 2:10-11.

Your Kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven is our deepest longing. The Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit in Romans 14:17, and its fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self control in Galatians 5:22-23. We desire with you that this fruit and the gifts of the Spirit would be evident in us and in the whole Body of Christ until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God in Ephesians 4:13, and that the Kingdom would come not only in word but in power in 1 Corinthians 4:20. We join you in praying Come Lord Jesus in Revelation 22:20, longing for that day when His will shall be done fully on earth as it is in heaven, and until then we ask to know and to walk in His will, to abide in Christ that we may bear much fruit in John 15:7-8 and to go and make disciples of all nations in Matthew 28:19-20.

Then we bring our daily needs before Him. Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God in Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4, so we ask Him for our daily bread both spiritual and physical, trusting that our God will supply every need of ours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus in Philippians 4:19. We confess that we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God in Romans 3:23 and that if we confess our sins he is faithful and righteous to forgive us in 1 John 1:9. We too choose to forgive as we have been forgiven, for if we do not forgive others neither will our Father forgive us in Matthew 6:14-15, and we release those who have sinned against us into the hands of Him who judges righteously. And we ask Him to lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one as Jesus taught in Matthew 6:13 and John 17:15, for He will give his angels charge over us in Psalm 91:11 and is able to keep us from stumbling.

We remember with you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me in John 14:6 and there is salvation in none other for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. It is in His name that all the promises of God are Yes and Amen in 2 Corinthians 1:20.

Let us pray together.

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. We thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only begotten Son to die for our sins and to rise again that we might be called Your children. Thank You for adopting us by Your Spirit so we may cry Abba Father. Cause Your name to be honored in our thoughts, words and deeds, and let Your gracious and compassionate character be seen in us. Let Your Kingdom come in us and through us with righteousness, peace and joy and with the fruit and gifts of Your Spirit, and let Your power be displayed to deliver and to heal and to set captives free. Let Your will be done in our lives as it is done in heaven, help us to abide in Christ, to bear fruit, and to make disciples wherever You send us. Give us this day our daily bread, meet every spiritual, emotional, physical and financial need according to Your riches in glory, that we may love You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength in Mark 12:30 and love our neighbor as ourselves in Mark 12:31. Forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors, cleanse us from all unrighteousness and give us grace to forgive from the heart and to pray for those who have wronged us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil and from the evil one, guard us from deception and fear and keep us by Your angels and by Your hand. For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. We thank You that You hear us when we pray according to Your will and we ask all these things in the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray this pattern daily, not as a recitation but as a guide that keeps first things first, lingering over each petition and letting the Spirit search your heart. Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving in Colossians 4:2, and pray without ceasing in 1 Thessalonians 5:17. May the Lord deepen your intimacy with Him as you seek His face and may your life increasingly reflect His honor, His Kingdom and His will until He comes.

What stood out to us is how you linger on who God is before asking for anything. That ordering gently reshapes a day. When we start with His name and His will, our own requests for provision, forgiveness and protection fall into a calmer place.

One simple way to keep this pattern alive without it feeling like repetition is to let one line stay with you for a whole day. Tomorrow it might be Hallowed be Your name and you notice ways to honor Him in ordinary conversations. The next day it might be Your kingdom come and you look for a small act of kindness or peace to carry. Letting the prayer breathe like that can keep it from becoming words we recite quickly.

Your thoughtful meditation upon the pattern prayer which our Lord gave is most cheering, for you have not taken it as a form to be mindlessly repeated, but as an outline and summary of topics to be prayed through with serious consideration and ardent desire.

That prayer which is recorded in Matthew may well be called the holy of holies of the word of God, where the Son of God speaks with the Father in closest fellowship of love. Our Lord's desire for the sanctification of His people pervades the whole prayer, and is gathered up in that one sentence, Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. When you pray Hallowed be thy name, you pray indeed, Lord, make thy people holy, that thy gracious and compassionate Name may get honour through our thoughts and words and deeds, and that our lives may cause it to be reverenced and not derided.

You have rightly put first things first, as it is written, Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. To pray Thy kingdom come is to ask that His righteousness and peace and joy may reign in us and through us, with the fruit of the Spirit in all its fulness, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness, and with power to live a holy life overflowing with love for God and for others. The kingdom of God is not a matter of talk, but of power, and we may ask that it may come in our own hearts, in our families and churches, and at last in its full manifestation when the Lord Himself shall return.

When you come to the second table of the prayer, you touch upon daily mercies. We feed upon the doctrines of grace as our daily bread, yet we also confess that we cannot live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. He will meet our spiritual and temporal needs and load us daily with His benefits, that we may love Him with heart and soul and mind and strength, and love our neighbour as ourselves.

And how sweet is that petition, Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. There is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared. This is no small or stinted pardon. It is a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. It is a complete forgiveness, an eternal forgiveness through Jesus Christ His Son. Whatever thy sins may have been, though thou hast been the chief of sinners, there is forgiveness with God even for thee, and that now, at this moment. Would Christ have put these words into your mouth if there were no pardon. Yet let it be remembered that the very prayer that teaches you to ask for mercy bids you say forgive us as we forgive our debtors. Unless you have forgiven others you read your own death warrant when you repeat the Lord's prayer. As we have received so much manifest forgiveness, for us to forgive should be as natural as to open our hands, entrusting those who have wronged us to Him who alone is appointed both to save and to judge.

You close with Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliverance is of the Lord. Neglect prayer, and you will soon discover that all your spiritual powers wax weak, but be much in supplication and he that is mighty on his knees is mighty everywhere. There is a prayer treasury, and we must all put prayers into the treasury. Do not think your standard of a prayer meeting is to be a low one. Go on praying, go on seeking, for the Lord heareth His people. Though Satan may whisper that God hath forsaken you and will not answer, remember how many have stayed at the brook of wrestling and found deliverance, and have met with mercy where they feared wrath.

And you do well to end, For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Not unto us, O Lord, but unto Thy Name be glory. All power in heaven and earth is given unto Him, and His is an everlasting kingdom which cannot be destroyed.

May the Lord hear this prayer as you pour out your heart before Him, sanctify you through His truth, keep you from sin and evil, give you daily bread from His own hand, and cause His face to shine upon you till His kingdom come in all its fulness. Amen.

It is good that you have taken the prayer the Lord gave and turned it over slowly in your heart rather than repeating it without thought. He gave it as a pattern to shape our desires, first toward the Father and then toward our own need, and you have kept that order well.

When you pray Hallowed be Your name, you ask rightly that His name be honored in your own thoughts, words and deeds, and that the world may come to reverence Him. And when you pray Your kingdom come and Your will be done, you ask for the greater things, that His righteousness and peace and joy would rule in you and through you, and that you would walk humbly and obediently as a disciple who abides in Christ and bears fruit. To seek first the kingdom in this way is the right foundation for all other prayers.

Then for what is bodily, the Lord teaches us to ask simply for daily bread, that is bread for this day. It is not a prayer for riches or for luxury, but for what is sufficient for food and for life, trusting that the Father who supplies seed to the sower will also supply what we need for the day and multiply the spiritual fruit in us. To pray in this way keeps the soul from anxiety about tomorrow and fastens it on what is most necessary.

You also pray as we must, forgive us as we forgive others, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. We do need such prayer every morning and every evening, for each day brings its own struggles and temptations, and prayer is a great weapon to keep us steady. God is moved with compassion to forgive the great debt we owe when we come honestly and confess our sins, and He then teaches us by that mercy to show mercy to those who have sinned against us. Continue to bring your specific needs and your specific sins before Him, and to pray by name for those who have wronged you, that they also might repent and find mercy.

Keep praying in this sincere and thoughtful way, not to impress others but to keep God gracious toward you through the day and through the night. He hears those who call on Him through His Son, and in Christ all the promises of God find their yes and amen.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful summary of the prayer Jesus taught us to pray and for the sincere heart behind it. Your desire to pray it thoughtfully and not as empty repetition is exactly how He intended it to be used.

What He gave in Matthew 6 is a model or pattern for prayer. There is little value in simply reciting the words from memory, but there is great value when you take it slowly, phrase by phrase, and meditate on what each request means. When prayed with understanding and with earnest faith, that kind of prayer is powerful and effective, as James 5 says.

You have laid it out well in the right order. Prayer begins with relationship. Because of the cross and resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit, those who receive Jesus are given the right to become children of God and to call Him Father, even Abba. Without that relationship through Christ, prayer has no foundation. With it, we can come with confidence as children to a Father.

The first three requests are all about God, not about us. Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. That teaches us that the primary thrust of prayer is not to get our own will done on earth, but to see His will done. We are asking that His name be honored in our thoughts, words and actions, and that His kingdom, which is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, would come more fully in us and through us and finally in all the earth when Christ returns. That last hope is the final prayer of Scripture, even so come Lord Jesus. Prayer was never meant to be a tool for accomplishing my kingdom and my will, but for seeking His kingdom first, as Matthew 6:33 says, trusting that He will then care for all the rest.

Only after our hearts are set on Him do we bring our own needs. You noted the four personal petitions and they cover the basic needs of our lives. Give us our daily bread, which includes every spiritual, physical, emotional and practical provision we need to love God and love others. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation. Deliver us from evil. Of all the petitions, Jesus paused to emphasize only one afterward, the call to forgive. We are forgiven as we forgive, and we cannot hold tightly to bitterness toward others while asking God to be gracious to us. If there are specific sins or specific people who have sinned against you, bring them honestly before the Lord by name, receiving His mercy and releasing them to His justice and mercy.

Prayer then returns to where it began, to worship. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Prayer is worship, it is intercession for others, and it is petition for ourselves. It should always lead us back to awe at who God is and end with praise, confident that He has heard and will answer according to His wisdom and love.

Continue to pray in this way, not casually or hurriedly, but fervently and from the heart. The fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much, not because the words are perfect, but because the Father hears His children who come through Jesus. He invites you to walk with Him day by day, to be delivered from the power of darkness into the kingdom of His Son, and to see His power at work to keep you, guide you, provide for you, and form His character in you.
