Shaping Reality with Words 18 Jul 2026 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. - Proverbs 18:21 Devotional: When a friend describes a beautiful sunset, a picture is created in your mind. The words enable you to make meaning. When a parent reacts to a child's artwork, meaning is created between child and parent, which can affect the child's self-concept for a lifetime. Likewise, when a lie is spoken, a false reality is constructed that, once discovered, can rupture relationships. For example, when Bill Clinton's inner circle believed his lie that he hadn't had sex with Monica Lewinsky, their minds accepted an "unreal reality." Their eventual discovery of the truth and resulting feelings of betrayal were probably more dramatic than those who hadn't believed Clinton in the first place. This power to affect one another is serious business. Our spoken words shape the reality of those with whom we interact Prayer: Father of heaven and earth, remove deceit from my heart and cause me to speak honestly with those you send to me. Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. We hear your reflection on the power of words and their ability to shape reality, both for good and for harm. The scripture you referenced, Proverbs 18:21, reminds us that "Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruits." This truth is profound, for our words can build up or tear down, heal or wound, bring clarity or deception. We are called to steward this power with great care, for the words we speak reflect the condition of our hearts.

Your example of lies and their destructive consequences is a sobering reminder of how deception fractures trust and distorts reality. The apostle James warns us, "But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God" (James 3:8-9). The tongue is a small member, yet it holds immense influence over our lives and the lives of others. We must guard our hearts, for "out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34).

Your prayer is a good starting point, but we must emphasize that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If we do not acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior, our prayers cannot reach the throne of grace. We encourage you to examine your heart and ensure that you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, acknowledging that You alone are the source of all truth and wisdom. We thank You for the gift of language and the power of words, which You have given us to communicate, encourage, and build up one another. Lord, we ask that You would purify our hearts and minds, removing all deceit, falsehood, and unrighteousness. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us (Psalm 51:10).

Father, we confess that our tongues have often been instruments of harm, speaking words that tear down rather than build up. We ask for Your forgiveness and for the strength to tame our tongues, that we may speak life and truth into the lives of those around us. Help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry (James 1:19). May our words always reflect Your love, grace, and truth.

Lord, we pray for those who have been wounded by the deceitful words of others. Heal their hearts, restore their trust, and remind them of Your unfailing love. Help them to forgive, even as You have forgiven us. We also pray for those who have spoken lies, that they would come to repentance and experience the freedom that comes from walking in truth.

Father, we ask that You would fill us with Your Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth (John 16:13). May our words be seasoned with salt, that they may bring grace to those who hear (Colossians 4:6). Teach us to use our tongues to proclaim Your goodness, share the gospel, and encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ.

We commit our words and our hearts to You, Lord, trusting that You will guide us in all truth and righteousness. May our lives be a testament to Your power and grace, and may our words always bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on the power of your words and to seek the Lord daily for wisdom and discernment in how you speak. Remember the words of Ephesians 4:29: "Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear." What a weighty and humbling truth, that our words can literally shape the world of someone else. We’ve all seen how a few careless sentences can wound deeply, while a simple honest word can bring immense relief. It’s sobering to realize that with every conversation we are building something real in another person’s life, for good or ill.

When we find ourselves exaggerating, bending the truth, or withholding what is real, it’s often because something deeper is going on inside us. Maybe we’re afraid of disapproval, or we want to control how others perceive us, or we’re trying to protect ourselves from a painful outcome. The struggle with our tongue usually points back to our heart, what we love, what we fear, what we’re trusting in that moment besides God. Noticing that is actually a grace; it gives us a place to begin.

One small, honest step can be to pause in the seconds before we speak, especially when we sense that familiar impulse to shade the truth, and silently offer those words to Jesus. You might breathe a quick prayer like, “Lord, give me the courage to be truthful right now, whatever the cost.” Over time, that habit can reshape not just our words but the fears underneath them. You don’t need to master this overnight; you just need to keep bringing it into the light with a heart that genuinely wants to please God.

Prayer: Jesus, you said the truth sets us free, yet we often cling to words that create false realities. Search our hearts and gently remove the fears that drive us toward deceit. Fill us with your steady love so that what comes out of our mouths gives life to those around us. In your name we ask it. Amen.

The cry of your heart is heard in the courts of heaven, for you ask the Father to remove deceit and grant honest speech. This is no small request, for the tongue is but the servant of the heart. If the heart be a fountain of falsehood, the streams will be bitter. A stony heart can no more speak true, tender words than a rock can weep dew. It is cold, unfeeling, and utterly selfish, saying within itself, “Why should I love the Lord? Why should I give my heart to Christ?” That heart must be removed, and a heart of flesh implanted, a heart that can think, aspire, and love. Only the hand that made man can work this miracle. He who takes away the stone and gives the living, sensitive heart must do it; and blessed be His name, He will answer your prayer.

Your words betray a longing for the perfuming of the inner man. The love of God shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Spirit, not merely in the assembly, but in the heart, is the only cure. When that sweet perfume fills the soul, the speech becomes true, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A divided heart produces only words, words, words, no heart, no truth! It is a dreadful slavery to utter with the lips what the soul does not endorse. Better to break stones on the road than to stand as a hollow echo. But when faith believes, then speech is justified; the tongue becomes a tree of life, and its fruit nourishes many.

Therefore, take your request directly to the Healer. Show Him the inward wound, the proneness to flatter, the ease with which you construct unrealities. A very small prick in the heart can be deadly, but a broken heart, truly broken, not divided, finds the balm in Jesus’ bleeding heart. Yield the whole citadel; let no chamber be locked. Let the Law be written not on tables of stone but on the fleshy tablets, in the handwriting of the Lord Himself. Then your speech shall drop with honesty, and those sent your way will drink from a well whose waters are sure. Go now, and believe that He who has begun this good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ.

Death and life are indeed in the power of the tongue, and you do well to tremble before such a truth. The words we speak do not merely describe reality; they create it in the hearts of those who hear. When a man lies, he builds a false world, a phantom of deception, which in time must shatter and wound all who trusted it. You have seen this yourself, as in the public frauds of rulers whose hidden sins were exposed, leaving betrayal deeper than any commonplace disbelief. How much more must we guard our own lips, lest we become agents of the same ruin!

You pray for a heart purged of deceit and a tongue that speaks honestly. This is a wise and sober petition, for the devil ever busies himself with substituting his appropriate deceit for the truth. He whispers that a small falsehood is nothing, that a clever word can smooth a hard path or flatter a neighbor’s ear without consequence. But Scripture declares, "Lest any of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin." The lie that seems so minor today will tomorrow harden the soul, breeding envy, murder, malignity, and every sort of ungodliness. It springs from a youthful lust, that inordinate desire to shape the world according to our own convenience rather than the fear of God. And what is its end? "Their folly shall be manifest unto all." Error never stands still; it always invents new deceits, and at last it is stripped bare before the judgment seat.

Yet consider: there is a deceit which is no deceit at all, a holy handling of truth. Jacob deceived his father, not out of malice but by divine economy, and Jeremiah cried, "O Lord, Thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived." Such things are not lies but mysteries of providence. The deceit you must flee with all your strength is that which proceeds from a double heart: the lie that covers greed, the false witness that breaks charity, the smooth speech that masks a ravening wolf within. "They shall proceed no further," says the Apostle, for those who call upon the Lord with a pure heart have nothing of deceit about them. Their words are life, because they are rooted in Him who is the Truth.

Therefore, let your prayer be not a passing breath but a constant cry. Go to your secret chamber and say with tears, "Father of heaven and earth, remove deceit from my heart." Then watch over your tongue daily, for what you speak will shape your brother’s soul and your own eternal destiny. If you love life, speak truth in love, and you will eat the fruit of peace. But if you harbor guile, recall the barbarian’s rebuke: "Have you not wives and children? Why then do you delight in vanities?" Nothing is sweeter than honest lips in a household of faith. Be that fountain, and God will bless your words to shape reality not for a moment’s gain but for everlasting life.

Words carry immense power to build up or tear down, to create a shared reality that can bring life or, when rooted in deceit, bring destruction. Your prayer for a heart rid of deceit and a tongue that speaks honestly is exactly where the focus must land. The tongue simply echoes what already lives inside. If the heart is divided or harboring hidden falsehood, words will eventually betray it. God is not fooled by any attempt to dress up our speech; He knows the truest motives and every secret corner of our inner life.

That can feel unsettling, but it is actually freeing. When we stop trying to manage our image before God and simply come honest, we are finally in a place where He can work. He does not ask us to clean ourselves up first. He invites us to let Him search us and reveal what we cannot see on our own. The heart is so deceitful that we often do not even recognize our own layers of self-deception. A prayer like David’s, “Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my heart and my mind,” becomes essential. In that raw honesty, God begins to deal with what is really there.

The desire you expressed matters. The reality is that God Himself puts holy yearnings inside His children. When you feel a push to abandon half-heartedness and to walk in integrity, that is evidence of His Spirit already at work. He prepares the heart, planting His own desires within us so that, as we yield, doing His will becomes our deepest pleasure. You will not perfect your own speech by sheer self-discipline. But as you seek Him with your whole heart, not a divided or faint-hearted turning, He will steadily transform the wellspring from which your words flow. A life guided by integrity becomes a life where pleasant, honest words are like health to your own soul and a gift to everyone you meet.

So do not be discouraged when you stumble into speaking less than truth. The Father sees a willing heart, just as He did with Peter, who meant his bold declarations fully even though his flesh was weak. Keep bringing your heart before the Lord in the night seasons, in the quiet moments, and ask Him to show you what is truly there. He will answer that prayer. Incline your heart to His testimonies and not to covetousness or any shadow of deceit. As He works in you both to will and to do His good pleasure, your words will increasingly become a fountain of life rather than a hollow construction.
