Seeking guidance

We understand your desire for godly wisdom as you consider this important decision. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." When considering marriage, it is crucial to seek God’s will above all else, for He knows what is best for His children.

A man who has never been married at 45 is not automatically a red flag, but it does warrant careful prayer and discernment. There could be many reasons for this—some godly, some not. We must examine his life, his walk with Christ, and his reasons for remaining unmarried this long. Is he content in singleness, serving the Lord wholeheartedly as Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 7:7-8? Or has he avoided marriage due to fear, selfishness, or unresolved sin? These are questions that must be prayerfully considered.

Scripture is clear that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, designed by God for mutual love, companionship, and the raising of godly offspring (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:22-33). If this man is a believer, his life should reflect the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Does he demonstrate these qualities? Is he committed to leading a wife and family in a way that honors God? Does he have a history of godly relationships, or has he been entangled in sinful patterns?

We must also address the reality that some men avoid marriage due to hidden sin, such as pornography, sexual immorality, or emotional unavailability. If this is the case, it is not only a red flag but a matter that must be confronted with truth and repentance. Jesus said in Matthew 18:9, "If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire." Sin must be dealt with radically, for it destroys lives and relationships.

If you are considering courtship with this man, we strongly encourage you to seek wise counsel from mature believers, particularly those who know him well. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Do not rush into a decision, but take time to observe his character, his relationship with the Lord, and his treatment of others. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, and it should not be entered into lightly or without godly confirmation.

We also want to gently remind you that your worth is found in Christ alone. Whether you marry or remain single, your identity is secure in Him. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 7:34-35, "The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. And this I say for your own profit; not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is appropriate, and that you may attend to the Lord without distraction." Marriage is a blessing, but it is not the ultimate goal—glorifying God is.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance for this situation. Lord, You know the desires of our sister’s heart, and we ask that You would direct her steps according to Your perfect will. If this man is the one You have prepared for her, we pray that You would confirm it clearly through Your Word, prayer, and godly counsel. If he is not, we ask that You would close the door and lead her to the spouse You have chosen for her.

Father, we also pray for this man. If he is a believer, we ask that You would reveal any areas of his life that are not aligned with Your will. Give him a heart of repentance and a desire to walk in holiness. If he is not a follower of Christ, we pray that You would draw him to Yourself, for apart from You, he cannot truly love or lead as You intend.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of fear, confusion, or deception that may be at work in this situation. We declare that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Give her discernment to recognize truth from deception and courage to walk in obedience to You.

Above all, Father, we pray that Your name would be glorified in this situation. May Your will be done, and may Your kingdom come in her life. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to spend time in prayer and fasting, seeking the Lord’s face for clarity. Surround yourself with believers who can speak truth into your life and hold you accountable. Remember, God’s timing is perfect, and He will not lead you astray. Trust in Him, and He will guide your steps.

We're here with you, sister, as you navigate this important decision. It's natural to feel drawn to someone, but it's crucial to align that with God's will. Remember, "The heart has its reasons which reason knows not of" (Blaise Pascal). While we can't fully understand our own hearts, we can trust that God does, and He wants the best for us.

We've been praying for you, and we want to encourage you to keep seeking God's face. Spend time in His presence, listening for His voice. Sometimes, God speaks softly, like a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). Be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).

Also, consider the man's character and his walk with Christ. Does he demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)? Is he committed to leading a wife and family in a way that honors God? Remember, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers" (2 Corinthians 6:14). It's not just about compatibility, but also about shared faith and values.

Lastly, trust that God has a plan for you. Whether that includes this man or not, His plan is for your good and His glory (Jeremiah 29:11). You are deeply loved and cherished by Him, regardless of your marital status. So, take your time, seek God's face, and trust in His perfect timing. We're here for you, every step of the way. Let's keep praying together, in Jesus' name. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
