The Choice of a Wife
Choosing a wife wisely means seeking divine guidance to avoid lifelong regret and sorrow.
We join with you in seeking the Lord's guidance and we are encouraged by your desire to understand His will and to make a decision that honors Him. That longing to please Him is itself a work of His grace in your heart and He delights to give wisdom to those who ask in faith.

The Scripture assures us that God does not withhold wisdom from His children. James 1:5 says But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. And Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. He has also promised Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. When we seek Him through His Word, through prayer, and through waiting patiently before Him, He makes His will clear. Romans 12:2 teaches us that as we are transformed by the renewing of our minds, we will be able to prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Learning to trust Him more is at the heart of finding clarity. Often we want the answer before we have learned to rest in the One who gives the answer. As you bring this particular matter before Him, we encourage you to dwell in His Word daily, to pray continually, and to seek godly counsel from mature believers, for the Lord often confirms His direction through these means. He may not always show the whole path at once, but He promises to guide each step and to give peace as we trust Him. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We notice that your request speaks of the Lord but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently share this because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by placing our faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are reconciled to God and can come boldly before His throne to ask for wisdom. We encourage you to be sure that your trust is in Him alone for salvation and for daily guidance.

We pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we thank You for this dear one who desires Your wisdom and Your will above all else. We ask that You would pour out Your wisdom liberally, that You would grant clarity and godly discernment concerning this matter. Remove confusion and fear, and help Your child to hear Your voice and to recognize Your leading through Your Word and Your Spirit. Teach us all to trust You with our whole heart and not to lean on our own understanding, acknowledging You in every decision. Grant a deep peace that surpasses understanding as this request is placed in Your hands, and strengthen faith to wait patiently for Your perfect timing. May the decision that is made bring honor and glory to You. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We are glad you shared this with us. Wanting to honor the Lord with your decision and to trust Him more in the process says a lot about your heart, and we are praying for you as you wait for clarity.

We know how heavy it can feel when you want to do what is right but the next step is not yet clear. Learning to trust Him often happens right in that waiting, as we keep bringing the matter to Him honestly and listening for His leading over time, not just looking for an instant answer.

Something that has helped many is to give this decision a little structure in prayer. You might set aside a quiet few minutes each day this week to bring this specific matter before the Lord, write down the options before you and what you sense is wise and honoring, and then share those notes with a mature believer or pastor who knows you and can help you weigh it with care. That steady rhythm can make discernment less overwhelming.

We are asking God to give you peace as you seek Him and to gently grow your confidence in His care for you.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Grant clear wisdom for this decision and a deeper trust in Your goodness and guidance. Lead in the way that honors You and bring peace as they wait on You. In Jesus name, amen.

It is a good and wise thing that you desire to know the will of the Lord and to do that which honors Him. This desire itself is no small mercy, for the work of the Spirit is to change the human will and to make men willing in the day of God's power, working in them to will and to do of His good pleasure.

I join my prayers with yours that the Lord would give you clarity, wisdom and holy discernment in this matter which lies upon your heart. He has promised that if any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and upbraids not, and it shall be given him. Ask, then, with confidence in Christ, through whom alone we have access to the Father.

Remember that as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, so His will must be our guide and our rest. There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and nine times out of ten if you look to the Word of God and to His holy commandments you will know what you must not do, and so be able to conclude what you may do. There is also a providential will which we should always consult, seen in the circumstances that surround us, and sometimes to be passive in the hand of God and to stand still until the cloudy and fiery pillar moves before us will be our highest wisdom. And there is a royal will which we seek to fulfil because we love the King, saying from the heart, I will go or I will stay, if it be the will of God, and I will not even wish for gain unless I can promote His glory by it.

Therefore wait upon the Lord. Lay your matter open before Him in prayer, search the Scriptures diligently, and bow with submission to His sovereign judgment. The promise is sure, Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. If you live near to God, He will say things to you that He will not tell to others, and He will make your way plain.

My prayer for you is this, that the God of all grace would quiet your heart, illuminate your mind by His Word and Spirit, keep you from leaning upon your own understanding, and teach you to trust Him more fully. May He deliver you from the folly of saying, I will do this or that, without asking His consent, and may He bring you to that blessed acquiescence where you can say, Not my will, but Thine be done. And may He, who will not leave His purpose half accomplished, carry you through this decision and all your days, till He brings you safely to His glory, for Christ's sake.
