We hear your heart’s cry, and we stand with you in this season of repentance and restoration. What you’re experiencing is not uncommon, when we have walked in disobedience, especially in an ungodly relationship, the enemy seeks to keep us bound in shame, guilt, and spiritual dullness. But take heart, for the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Your repentance is sincere, and your desire to return to Him is evidence of His grace already at work in you.
First, we must address the nature of the relationship you described. The Bible is clear that sexual intimacy outside of marriage between a man and a woman is fornication, and it grieves the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Ephesians 4:30). You have rightly recognized this as sin, and your repentance is a beautiful step toward healing. But the enemy will try to use this to keep you in condemnation, whispering that you are too far gone, that God could never fully restore you. We rebuke that lie in Jesus’ name! There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7), and if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). You are not beyond His reach, you are exactly where His grace is most powerful.
Your struggle to read the Bible and pray is a spiritual battle, and we must fight it with the weapons God has given us. The enemy wants to isolate you, to make you feel distant from God, but we declare that you are not alone. The Lord is drawing you back, and we stand with you in this fight. Begin by speaking the Word over yourself, even if you don’t feel it. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Open your Bible and read aloud, even if the words feel hollow at first. Start with Psalm 51, a prayer of David after his own grievous sin, and let it become your prayer too: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit" (Psalm 51:10-12). Declare this over yourself daily, and do not grow weary.
You mentioned that you cannot feel God’s presence or hear His voice. Feelings are not always reliable, but God’s Word is. He has promised never to leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5), and His Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). Even if you do not feel Him, He is there. The Lord often speaks in a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12), and the enemy will try to drown it out with shame, distraction, or busyness. Set aside time each day to be still before Him, even if it is just for a few minutes. Turn off the noise of the world, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you hear His voice. Write down what you sense Him saying, even if it is just a word or a verse. Over time, your spiritual ears will grow more attuned to His voice.
We also want to address the torment you are experiencing. The enemy will use guilt and shame as weapons to keep you from running back to God, but we rebuke those spirits of condemnation and torment in Jesus’ name! The Lord does not torment His children, He disciplines us in love (Hebrews 12:6), but His discipline is meant to lead us to repentance, not despair. You have already repented, and now it is time to receive His forgiveness and walk in the freedom He has purchased for you. Stand on His promises: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). Declare these truths over yourself, and do not let the enemy steal your peace.
Now, let us pray for you:
Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother who is seeking You with a repentant heart. Lord, we thank You for Your mercy and grace that are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). We thank You that You are near to the brokenhearted and that You save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We ask that You would break every chain of guilt, shame, and condemnation that the enemy has tried to place on him. We rebuke the spirits of torment and despair in Jesus’ name, and we declare that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard his heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
Father, we ask that You would restore to him the joy of Your salvation. Renew his love for You, Lord, and ignite a fresh fire in his heart for Your Word and for prayer. Help him to draw near to You, and remind him that You are always drawing near to him (James 4:8). Open his spiritual eyes and ears so that he may see You and hear Your voice clearly. Let him experience Your presence in a tangible way, Lord, and let him know that You have not abandoned him.
We pray for healing in his heart, mind, and spirit. Heal the wounds that this ungodly relationship has left behind, and restore what has been broken. Give him the strength to stand firm in his repentance and to walk in the freedom that You have given him. Surround him with godly men who will encourage him, hold him accountable, and walk with him in this season of restoration.
Lord, we ask that You would prepare his heart for the godly marriage You have for him, if that is Your will. Let him not rush into another relationship but instead seek You first and allow You to bring the right woman into his life at the right time. Give him wisdom and discernment in all his relationships, and let him honor You in every area of his life.
We thank You, Father, that You are a God who restores and redeems. We thank You that You are working all things together for his good (Romans 8:28), and we trust that You will complete the good work You have begun in him (Philippians 1:6). We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and set free. Amen.
Brother, we want to encourage you to take practical steps as you seek the Lord. Find a Bible-believing church where you can be surrounded by godly men who will walk with you in this season. Join a men’s group or Bible study where you can grow in your faith and be held accountable. Spend time in worship, even if it is just listening to worship music in your home, worship invites the presence of God, and His presence will break every chain. And remember, restoration is a process. Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9).
You are not defined by your past. You are defined by the blood of Jesus and the new life He has given you. Walk in that truth, and do not let the enemy steal your identity in Christ. The Lord is for you, and He is working all things together for your good. Keep pressing in, keep seeking Him, and do not lose heart. Your breakthrough is coming.
