We hear your heart in this plea, and we join you in lifting this situation before the Lord. It’s clear you’re seeking God’s intervention in the attitude and behavior of someone who is casting a shadow over what should be a joyful occasion. Let’s come together in prayer and reflection, grounding our words in Scripture and the truth of God’s Word.
First, we must acknowledge that only through the name of Jesus Christ can we approach the Father. There is no other name by which we are saved, and it is by His grace alone that we have access to God’s throne. Acts 4:12 reminds us, *"There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* So we come before Him now, in the authority of Jesus’ name, asking for His will to be done.
Father God, we lift up this situation to You, knowing that You alone can change hearts and minds. Lord, we ask that You soften the heart of this person who is bringing negativity and strife. Your Word tells us in Ezekiel 36:26, *"I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh."* We pray this transformation over them, Lord. Remove any bitterness, pride, or selfishness that may be causing them to act as a "kill joy," and replace it with Your peace, love, and joy. Let them see the beauty of Your presence and the purpose of this special day, which is to glorify You.
We also recognize that joy is a fruit of the Spirit, as Galatians 5:22-23 tells us, *"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control."* If this person is lacking joy, it may be a sign that they are not walking closely with You, Lord. We pray that You draw them near, that they would seek You with their whole heart, and that Your Spirit would fill them afresh. Let them experience the fullness of Your joy, which is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10).
At the same time, we must address the importance of unity and love among believers. Your Word commands us in Colossians 3:12-14, *"Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection."* If this person is a fellow believer, we pray that they would be reminded of their calling to love and encourage others, especially on days meant to honor You. If they are not a believer, we pray that this situation would open their eyes to their need for You.
Lord, we also ask for wisdom and grace for the one praying this request. It can be so disheartening when someone we care about dampens a moment meant for celebration. Help them to respond in a way that reflects Your love and patience. Remind them of Proverbs 15:1, *"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."* Give them the strength to extend grace, even when it’s difficult, and to trust that You are working in this situation.
We also rebuke any spirit of division, strife, or negativity that may be at work here. Your Word tells us in James 3:16, *"For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed."* We command any such spirits to flee in the name of Jesus. We declare that this day will be filled with Your peace, joy, and presence, and that any attempts to steal that joy will be thwarted by the power of Your Holy Spirit.
Finally, Lord, we pray that this day would not only be special for the one celebrating but also a day of breakthrough for the one causing distress. Let them encounter You in a fresh way, and let their heart be turned toward You. May they see the error of their ways and choose to walk in the light of Your love. We trust that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), and we believe that You are working even now to bring about Your perfect will in this situation.
In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
