You cry out for the salvation of your household and for wisdom, and this is a holy desire. Yet understand what true wisdom is, not the reasoning of this world, which God has made foolish, but the wisdom we speak among the perfect: the Gospel, the method of salvation through a crucified Christ. To those perishing, the word of the Cross is foolishness, but to you who believe, it is the very power of God. This is the wisdom hidden from before the ages, foreordained for your glory. Cling to it, and teach it to your children by the way you live.
You ask for understanding of His Word. That hunger is the pure milk which feeds the soul, and God will not deny it to those who seek with a sincere heart. But let that Word bear fruit in your life. For as the earth brings forth herbs not by the skill of the husbandman alone but by the command and blessing of God, so your family will flourish if you walk in obedience. Do not merely recite the Scriptures, but be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful, He feeds even the adulterer and the sorcerer, and no one perishes of hunger except by their own choice. Let your good deeds, especially to the poor, become the blessing that adorns the Gospel. When the Apostle anticipated finding the saints filled with such fruit, he called it “the fulness of the blessing of the Gospel.” That is the honor you can bring.
You pray for a wall of fire around your region. God indeed sets angelic protection, but He also calls you to seek the welfare of the city where you dwell. This is not done by prayer alone. Let the companions of your table be the poor and the upright, not those who love this world’s vanities. Charge them to rebuke what is amiss in your household, to help you govern your servants and raise your children. By them you will clothe the naked, visit the prisoner, and track out the stranger, this is the spiritual traffic that yields profit to God. When your neighbors see your good works, they glorify your Father in heaven, and the Gospel takes root.
Honor God, then, not with words only but with deeds. He has no need of our honor; we need the honor that comes from Him. He created you when you were not, breathed into you a living soul, set you over all creatures, and crowned you with glory. What return can you make? Offer the spiritual sacrifice of a life laid down for others, drawing them to salvation. If you see a Gentile or any man perishing, weep for him, for the Cross which is your wisdom is his stumbling-block. Do not weary in this, for God will supply every need according to His riches in glory, and your household shall stand as a witness that the Lord is faithful.
