Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You have brought before God a prayer that is woven through with the words of Scripture, asking for your household's salvation, for wisdom, and for a wall of fire around your city. This is good, for the mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and the heart that treasures the divine oracles is a fountain of sound doctrine. But let us not think that by stringing together holy verses we have already attained the summit of the Christian life. The demons themselves can quote Scripture; it is the doing of it that marks the child of God. You ask for wisdom: hear then the Apostle when he declares that what the world calls wisdom is folly with God, and that we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness. The Cross is the power of God and the wisdom of God. Do not seek after signs as the Jew, nor after philosophical systems as the Greek. Embrace in faith the Jesus who was made sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. That is the true knowledge, the wisdom that surpasses all human understanding. For the Apostles, unlettered fishermen and tentmakers, overthrew the wise of this world not by syllogisms but by proclaiming a crucified Lord, and the message, foolish as it seemed, proved stronger than all the reasoning of men. So train your families not in the wisdom of this age, which comes to nothing, but in the simplicity that receives the gospel as a little child.
You cry out for the salvation of your relatives, and I rejoice with you. Yet salvation is not only a matter of lip confession but of a life transformed. The leaven of the gospel, though small, works until the whole lump is leavened. Your own faithful conduct, your mercy, your alms, these are the blessing of the gospel that I spoke of to the Philippians. When we do good to the needy, when we show kindness without grudging, we become imitators of our heavenly Father, who feeds even the unthankful and clothes even the fornicator. Let your hands and feet be the manifestations of good works; let your heart be fortitude, your soul godliness. A Christian woman like Phoebe, who was a succorer of many and of myself, received the highest praise not for her words but for her deeds. So too, you men, be diligent in the duties of your calling, and let your conversation be seasoned with grace, that those who are without may see your good works and glorify your Father. Do not suppose that a wall of fire is promised to those who merely recite the psalm; it is the righteous, those who fear the Lord and make the Most High their habitation, who dwell in safety. Angelic protection is given to those who inherit salvation through faith working by love.
You have spoken of meeting pressing needs and settling into routine. I would not have you anxious about such things, for the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. He who clothes the grass of the field with a beauty that is cast into the oven tomorrow will much more provide for you, O you of little faith. Still, the Apostle bids us to labour, working with our hands the thing that is good, that we may have to give to him that needs. So consolidate your affairs, exercise your body with moderation, and fulfill your duties, but let all be done in reference to the kingdom. For the time is short. And as you pray for your neighbours, for the students and teachers, for the fishermen and the lawgivers, remember that the conviction of the Spirit often comes through the witness of a faithful life. Live such a life among them. Let them see a family that fears the Lord, children who are a father’s joy, a husband and wife who honour their covenant. Then the wisdom from above, which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, will be seen, and many will be drawn to the Saviour, not by your words alone but by your works.
Persevere in afflictions, rejoice in blessings, and hunger for the pure milk of the word. The Scriptures are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Be not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Take up the sacred book daily, not glancing at it with a wandering eye but devouring it with a spiritual hunger. Then, as you are sanctified by the truth, you will become a pillar and ground of the truth in your own household and in the city where God has placed you. I pray that the Lord of glory, who was crucified for us and rose again, may fill you with the knowledge of His will, enrich you with every good deed, and build a rampart of fire about your lives, not a visible flame but the invisible guard of His holy angels, reserved for those who love His appearing. Stand fast, then, in the faith of the gospel; let your moderation be known to all men; and forget not that the kindness shown to the least of the brethren is shown to Christ Himself. So shall your prayer be answered not only in words but in the very substance of your daily walk.
