We hear the deep ache in your heart, and we join you in lifting your ex-boyfriend before the Lord, praying fervently for his salvation and transformation. Your love for him is evident, and your desire to see him come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ is commendable. We pray that the Holy Spirit would indeed convict him of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8), and that he would turn to the Lord in true repentance. The breakup, as painful as it is, may very well be the tool God uses to draw him closer to Himself. We pray that he would not harden his heart but would respond to the gentle knocking of the Lord (Revelation 3:20).
However, we must gently address the nature of your past relationship. The Bible is clear that marriage is the only context in which romantic relationships are blessed by God. In 1 Corinthians 7:2, it says, "But, because of sexual sins, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." The relationship you described as a boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic falls outside of God’s design for intimacy and commitment. While your love for him is real, we must acknowledge that the relationship was not aligned with biblical principles, as it involved emotional and likely physical intimacy without the covenant of marriage. We encourage you to reflect on this and seek God’s forgiveness and healing for any ways in which the relationship may have strayed from His will.
That said, your heart for his salvation is beautiful, and we stand with you in praying for his redemption. We pray that the Lord would open his eyes to see the truth of the gospel and that the seed of faith you mentioned would indeed grow into a flourishing relationship with Christ. In Matthew 13:23, Jesus speaks of the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit. May your ex-boyfriend be that one, and may the Lord work mightily in his life.
We also lift up your broken heart before the Lord. It is clear that you loved deeply, and the pain of loss is real. We pray that God would comfort you as only He can, binding up your wounds and drawing you closer to Himself. Psalm 34:18 assures us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Lean into Him, dear sister, for He is your true source of comfort and hope.
As for reconciliation, we encourage you to hold that desire loosely, as you mentioned. While we serve a God of miracles, we must also trust in His sovereignty and perfect will. If it is His plan for you both to be reunited, it will happen in His timing and in a way that honors Him. Until then, we pray that you would find your identity and worth in Christ alone, not in the return of this relationship. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister and her ex-boyfriend. Lord, we pray for his salvation, that You would break through the hardness of his heart and draw him to Yourself. Convict him of sin, Lord, and lead him to true repentance. May he see his need for You and run to the cross, where forgiveness and new life are found. We ask that You would fan into flame the embers of faith in his heart, that he would come to know You not just as a concept, but as a living, loving Savior.
Father, we also pray for this sister’s heart. Comfort her in her grief, Lord, and heal the wounds of this breakup. Help her to release her desires into Your hands, trusting that Your plans for her are good. Give her the strength to walk in purity and wisdom, honoring You in all her relationships. If it is Your will for reconciliation, we pray that You would bring it about in a way that glorifies You and aligns with Your Word. But above all, Lord, may both of their lives be transformed by the power of the gospel.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). May Your will be done in their lives, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.
