Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for the constant protection of your family day and night, whether you are together or apart, awake or asleep, reflects a deep trust in the Lord and it is a good and right prayer to bring before Him.
The Scripture teaches that you do not need to ask God to come and be with you as if He were far away. He is already with you. There is no place you can go to escape His presence. As David declared, if I go up to heaven You are there, if I go down to the depths You are there. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, and in Him we live and move and have our being. You never leave His sight, and He never leaves you alone.
What we often lack is not His presence but a living awareness of His presence. When that awareness grows dim we are tempted to look for reminders or to feel that God is only in one special place. In truth God cannot be contained in one place. The heaven of heavens cannot contain Him. He is with you in your home just as fully as in any place of worship. The great need for every believer is to cultivate that consciousness of His nearness throughout the whole day, because when we are conscious that He is present we live differently and we find peace.
Moses understood this. When God offered to send an angel to go before the people, Moses said, if Your presence does not go with us, do not send us from here. He knew that no substitute could do what only God's own presence can do. And God answered, My presence will go with you and I will give you rest. That is the wisest position for any family to take, to desire nothing and to go nowhere apart from Him. It is foolish to venture anywhere without Him, and it is restful to know He goes with you.
That presence is also the answer to fear. Fear grows when we feel alone or uncertain, but the consciousness of God with us drives fear away. Even when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death you do not need to be afraid, because He is with you. True safety is not found in a place or in a charm but in abiding in Jesus Christ. In Christ we experience the mercy, grace and keeping power of God. He Himself is our protection.
So I join you in praying that you and your family will walk in the conscious fellowship of God every hour. May the Lord keep you from all danger and harm, from trouble and every evil, and may He make His presence known to you in a real and personal way whether you are together or apart. May He guard you when you lie down and when you rise up, and may you rest in the confidence that Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have access to God, holds you securely and will never forsake you. In Jesus name, Amen.
