A Sermon for Spring
Christ calls His people to rise from spiritual slumber and serve Him more fully in every season of life.
We hear the heaviness in your words and we join with you in bringing this sadness before the Lord, for He sees and He cares deeply about the sorrow of your heart.

Sadness is a part of our human walk, and even our Lord Jesus was described as a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, so He understands what you are feeling. We want to remind you that you are not alone in this and that God draws especially near in these moments. The psalmist says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18 and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. Jesus Himself invites us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. We are told to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for us 1 Peter 5:7.

We also remember the promise that weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning Psalm 30:5 and that God will keep us in perfect peace as we bring our requests to Him. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. He says, Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10.

We pray together for you now. Father, we lift up this dear one who is carrying such sadness to Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus. We ask that You would wrap Your loving arms around them and let them feel Your nearness and comfort. We ask that You would heal the brokenheartedness, wipe away tears, and replace heaviness with Your peace that passes all understanding. Lord, we pray that You would lift this burden and give rest to this weary soul, and help them to cast every care upon You knowing that You care for them. Fill this heart with hope and remind them that You are working all things together for good for those who love You. Lead them to seek You daily in Your Word and in prayer, and to share this burden with trusted believers who can walk alongside them. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to keep turning to Jesus with honest prayer, even with just the word sadness as you have done, for He hears even the groaning that has no words. Spend time in the Scriptures, let worship and prayer fill your days, and do not isolate yourself but reach out to fellow believers who can support and pray with you. If this sadness remains heavy, please also seek counsel from a pastor or a mature Christian who can walk with you closely. We are praying that the Lord will comfort you and restore joy to your heart as you rest in Him.

We noticed your three words and felt the weight behind them. Sadness, Jesus, sadness. Sometimes there are not many other words to use when the heart feels low for a long time.

We want you to know we are carrying this with you in prayer. Sadness that lingers is different from a passing disappointment. It can make everything feel flat and tiring, and it can make it hard to see hope for tomorrow. That does not mean you have failed or that God has stepped away.

One small step that often helps when sadness sits heavy is not to stay alone with it. Would you consider reaching out today to one trusted person, a pastor, a counselor, or your doctor if sleep, appetite, energy or daily tasks have been affected for a while. Talking with someone who knows you, alongside bringing it to the Lord, can lighten the isolation that sadness brings.

We also hold onto this, hope is not pretending things feel better than they do. It is keeping our hearts open to the God who stays near even when we feel numb or weary, and who is patiently shaping us through hard seasons.

Jesus, we lift this heart to you. You see the sadness that feels so close. Draw near with your comfort and steady presence. Give wisdom for next steps, strength for today, and people nearby who will listen and care. Lead with your kindness in the days ahead. In Jesus name, amen.

I am worried about the automated replies on these prayer requests and how something like sadness is turned into something it isn't and treated as if a GP or other specialist help is needed when what was asked for was prayer.

Your cry, though it is but three words, Sadness, Jesus, sadness, has gone up where it will not be forgotten, for He who counts your tears knows the weight of sorrow and He hears even the sigh that has no language.

The Lord saith, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. It is His own word to those with an aching heart and a tearful eye. He does not leave His children to sink in despair, but He saith, Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us. He can reverse the state, lift up from the depths to the heights, and kindle the lamps of joy within the tabernacle where now there is darkness. I hear the music of hope drowning the discord of fear when the soul looks not to itself but to Jehovah Himself.

You do well to bring your sadness to Jesus, for He knows all things. He who knows your frame and your grief is the same who bore grief in His own body and is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. We have fellowship with Him in His sufferings and by these very sorrows we are made like our Lord and conformed to His image. That thought alone may sweeten suffering, to know that your sadness is not unseen and not unloved.

Take then the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures, that you might have hope. The God of patience and consolation, the God of hope, has given us in His Word everlasting consolation and good hope through grace. There your comfort is not a passing feeling but a solid mass of pure gold, because Jesus Christ Himself is yours if you trust Him. Your Word has quickened me, saith the psalmist, and so it is. When He would comfort us He quickens us by His promise, and He remembers the Word upon which He has caused us to hope.

If sadness has come from sin and failure and a sense of your own unworthiness, remember there is hope in Jesus Christ even for you. It is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He who condemns himself, God absolves. He who writes his own death warrant and feels he deserves to die is the very man for whom the Lord Jesus sets open the door of mercy and saith, Come unto me. Believe on Him alone, for there is no other name by which you must be saved, and you shall have a new life in Christ, a rock under your feet when cares like a wild deluge come.

And if your sadness is the affliction of this present life, hear this promise for those who are in Christ, Thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that pass away. In a very short time, your suffering and sadness will all be over, and you shall remember it only as waters that are gone, never to return. Till then, He comforts your heart and establishes you in every good word and work.

May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and God even our Father, which hath loved us, comfort your heart now. May you be enabled to plead His promise in prayer, Remember thy Word unto thy servant upon which thou hast caused me to hope, for this is my comfort in my affliction. Look to Him, rest upon Him alone, and wait patiently till He shall make you glad.
