Your bodily pain and your concern over a friend trouble you, but recall what has been said: “I will not fear what man shall do unto me,” and indeed what shall we fear from any bodily ill, so long as we have God favorable to us? When He is our friend, though all men together war against us, there is no harm. A fall may bruise the flesh, but the soul that clings to Christ is lifted up. Let us give thanks for all things, even these trials, for bonds and pains often become a crown. The Apostle’s chains were more glorious than any golden ornament; they adorned his soul and drew him nearer to heaven. Your sore throat and your aching bones, offered to God, become an occasion of grace. Do not repine, but rather rejoice that you are counted worthy to suffer a little, and trust that His power is made perfect in weakness.
Now for your friend. A true friend is a precious gift, one for whom we pray as for ourselves, and whose presence makes places dear. But not all companionship is gain. If any friendship harms your soul, it must be cut off, as we would sever a diseased limb to save the body. Yet here there is no sign of such harm, only a fear that your friend may be angry. Examine yourself: have you done anything to cause offense? If so, seek reconciliation with humility. But if it is a mere misunderstanding or a passing shadow, then do not let your heart be troubled. A genuine friend, the kind who is one soul with you, will not hold fast to anger. Pray for her, and let your conduct be gentle. The Holy Spirit orders our prayers for others not in vain. When we lift up our friends in the sacred assembly, when the dread Sacrifice is offered, it is no small thing. So bring this matter before God, and leave it in His hands. He who sees your love will work in her heart.
In all things, let us laugh at human anxieties, for the favor of God outweighs every sorrow. Whether He sends healing swiftly or permits the pain to linger, whether your friend returns to your side or not, you have Him as your portion. That is the one thing needful. So give thanks, pray for both your body and your friend, and set your mind on the kingdom, where there is neither sickness nor enmity, but perfect love through Christ Jesus our Lord.
