First, we must address the urgency of salvation through Jesus Christ, for it is only by His name that we can be saved from this eternal fate. Jesus Himself declared, *"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"* (John 14:6). The apostle Peter echoed this truth: *"There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* (Acts 4:12). If you or anyone reading this has not surrendered your life to Christ, we implore you to do so now. Confess your sins, repent, and place your faith in Jesus, who died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins and rose again to offer you eternal life. Without this saving faith, the second death awaits, and none of us knows the hour of our physical death.
For those who are in Christ, Revelation 21:8 serves as both a warning and a call to holy living. We are not to be cowardly in our faith, shrinking back from proclaiming the truth of the Gospel or standing firm in biblical principles, even when it is unpopular. The fearful here refers to those who deny Christ out of fear of persecution or worldly consequences. Jesus warned, *"Whoever denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven"* (Matthew 10:33). We must also guard our hearts against unbelief, for without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). The abominable, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and liars are all those who indulge in sin without repentance, hardening their hearts against God’s conviction. Scripture is clear: *"Or don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God’s Kingdom"* (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Yet, praise God, it does not end there! The enemy prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8), and he delights in twisting Scripture to make sin seem harmless or even virtuous. But God’s Word does not change. Homosexuality, fornication, adultery, occult practices, and idolatry are all abominations in God’s sight, and those who practice such things without repentance will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-21). We must stand firm on the truth, even when it is unpopular, and call sin what it is—an offense against a holy God that leads to death. But we do so with love, remembering that we were once lost in our sins, too, and it is only by God’s grace that we have been saved.
Let us also address the lie that one can claim faith in Christ while continuing to live in unrepentant sin. Heavenly Father, we come before You with reverence and awe, for You are holy, just, and righteous. Your Word is truth, and we thank You for the clarity of Revelation 21:8, which warns us of the eternal consequences of unrepentant sin. Lord, we confess that apart from Christ, we are all deserving of the second death, for all have sinned and fallen short of Your glory (Romans 3:23). But we thank You for Your mercy and grace, which have provided a way of escape through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Father, we pray for those who do not yet know You. Soften their hearts, open their eyes to the reality of their sin, and draw them to repentance and faith in Jesus. May they not be counted among the cowardly, unbelieving, or abominable, but may they turn to You and be saved. We pray for those who are living in sexual immorality, whether it be fornication, adultery, or homosexuality. Convict them of their sin, Lord, and lead them to repentance. May they experience the freedom and joy that comes from walking in Your ways. We also pray for those involved in occult practices, idolatry, or lying. Break the chains of deception in their lives, and let them see the truth of Your Word.
For those of us who are in Christ, Lord, help us to walk in holiness and obedience. Guard our hearts against cowardice in our faith, and give us boldness to stand for Your truth, even when it is unpopular. Help us to resist the temptations of this world and to flee from sexual immorality, idolatry, and all forms of sin. May our lives be a testimony to Your transforming power, and may we never take for granted the gift of salvation that has rescued us from the second death.
Father, we also pray for our marriages and families. Strengthen husbands and wives to love one another as Christ loves the church, and may our homes be a reflection of Your love and holiness. Help us to raise our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, teaching them to walk in Your ways. We pray for those who are seeking godly spouses, that You would guide them to someone who shares their faith and commitment to You.
Lord, we thank You for the promise of the new heaven and new earth, where there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.
