Spurgeon
Beloved of All
Sleep is the gift of God. He giveth His beloved sleep, and yours is the sleep of security, even in the midst of a world that is a wilderness full of wolves and robbers. To lie down in the woods, where danger prowls, and yet to rest in perfect peace, this is the peculiar portion of those who are kept by Him.
You have praised the Lord for His angels that encamp around you, and you do well to magnify His name for this. God’s mysterious angelic agency, which you see not and hear not, is most true and real. A cordon of protection surrounds those who walk in His ways, and if you are but faithful to Him and keep in His footsteps, nothing shall hurt you between here and Heaven. Childlike trust in Providential guidance invites this keeping, for He would not have charged His angels concerning you if you did not need protection through all the watches of the night.
Yet this repose must ever be “in Jesus.” That gentle touch of His presence is what you have sought, and it is a blessed thing to feel such full assurance of the Savior’s nearness that the present trial of wakefulness or fear is swallowed up in a far more exceeding weight of joy. To sleep in Him is to rest as one who is as much in Christ in the unconscious hours as in the waking day. The tossing of the night does not take Him by surprise; He sleeps not nor slumbers, and He gives to His beloved a rest that mirrors the calm of the saints above. So rest on, kept by the Shepherd who gently leads, numbered among His flock, and waking all right in the morning, for the Lord maketh you to dwell in safety.
