Restful sleep, protection, financial provision

The sleep you seek for your body will remain elusive if the soul lies drunk with cares. For what is the sleeplessness you describe but the heart stifled, as though by excess of food, with anxieties about money and treatments? These are the dreams of the present life, phantoms that seem real but have no fixedness. Riches are a dream, and so is every earthly need, however pressing it appears. When the heart is not weighed down by these manifold desires, it soon recovers itself and is immediately wakeful, lying down in sleep as decently as one who is awake. Therefore, make no provision for the flesh to fulfil its lusts, by lighting up the flame of dread. To care for the body for health’s sake is blameless, the Apostle himself prescribed a little wine for the stomach. But when anxious thoughts about provision rake up the smouldering embers day and night, the soul remains drunk with a sleep worse than death, seeing things that are not as though they were. Turn your industry first to spiritual things, and the ordered state of the soul will bring rest to the body.

You ask for divine protection, but let us understand what must truly be guarded. He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, yet the suffering depends on ourselves. For it is said, “Do not suffer your foot to be moved.” If we will stand steadfast and unmovable, we shall not be shaken. The earthquake that loosed the Apostles’ bonds left the prison-keeper in terror, for it is not miracles themselves that save, but the things which issue in our own deliverance. You seek protection, yet the greater safeguard is to make your very need an occasion for love. Every talent, whether in money, in protection, or in teaching, is given for the common advantage. You are not poorer than that widow, nor more uninstructed than Peter and John. When you show forth zeal and do all things for the common good, even by one talent you may approve yourself, and this is more pleasing to God than any visible shield. The hands that are always pure, the soul that does not plot or reckon up wrongs, lies decently even in sleep, and such a one is among the angels, guarded not by walls but by the fear of God.

As for financial provision to meet needs and surgery, consider the prison-keeper who, on finding himself safe, did not think all was well, but fell before the prisoner crying, “What must I do to be saved?” His outward peril became the door to eternal safety. The provision you truly need is to prune away all that merely kindles desire, seeking one thing only: to have the flesh in health. Beyond this, do not go. This house of prayer is a spiritual surgery, not to gather fresh wounds of greed or fretful care. Use what God supplies for the stomach’s sake and your often infirmities, and spend the greater industry on your neighbor’s advantage. For when you live for the common good, you will find that the very things which seemed lacking are added unto you, and the sleep of your nights will no longer be the death-like rest of those drunk with earthly fears, but the composed and wakeful repose of those who walk habitually with God.

Your request for prayer has been heard, and the Lord knows the burdens you carry, the need for deep, restoring sleep, daily protection, and the finances for medical treatments and surgery. These are not small things, and it is right to bring them to the One who numbers the hairs on your head.

Think of the shepherd who lies down at the opening of the fold. No wolf can enter, no sheep can wander out, without passing over him. He becomes the door. That is a picture of Jesus watching over you. When you close your eyes tonight, you are not left to the mercy of circumstance. The One who never slumbers is your keeper; His own body is the gate. Your rest can be sweet because He has already faced whatever you fear. So pray for sleep, but even more, rest your heart in the finished work of Christ. He gives to His beloved even in their sleep.

As for protection, remember how a deep sleep from the Lord once fell on an entire camp of armed men who surrounded David. Their strength was rendered useless while God’s servant stood untouched. The same hand that brought that unnatural slumber upon enemies still governs the night. You may sleep, and He will see that what is truly dangerous cannot reach you without first meeting Him.

The financial strain is real, and God is not indifferent to your body’s needs. Yet every earthly provision ultimately points to a greater one. God made one perfect provision for your sin, the death of His own Son. If He has met that eternal debt, will He fail to supply what you need for daily bread? He is not stingy. Under the old covenant, He even made a special provision for cleansing a leper, a law that left room for Himself to work a miracle, because leprosy was incurable. He does not box Himself in. He can open doors no one knows about, stir the heart of an unexpected helper as Abigail once acted to save her household, or simply increase what you have in your hands.

But as you wait, do not let worry become an excuse for spiritual drowsiness. The days are short, and our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The same Scripture that promises the Lord will talk with you when you wake also warns against the kind of slumber that folds the hands and invites poverty. Be diligent in what you can do, and make no provision for the flesh to chase after anxiety or escape. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ instead.

He is near. One day the trumpet will sound, and those who sleep in Him will rise to everlasting life. Until that morning, may you find your nights guarded, your days provided for, and your spirit awake.

We are so grateful that you entrusted us with the privilege of lifting you up in prayer for restful sleep, divine protection, and financial provision during this challenging time. It has been our joy to stand in agreement with you before the Lord, asking Him to meet every need—physical, emotional, and financial—as you prepare for medical treatments and surgery.

If God has answered these prayers in ways you’ve seen or felt, we would love to celebrate His faithfulness with you. Please share a praise report so we can rejoice together in His goodness. If, however, the burden still feels heavy or the answers haven’t yet come, we encourage you to post this request again. We are committed to walking alongside you in persistent prayer, trusting that our Heavenly Father hears and will provide in His perfect timing.

May the Lord bless you with His peace that surpasses all understanding as you continue to seek Him. May He grant you the rest you need, surround you with His protection, and open the floodgates of His provision. We pray this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
