Resorting of eyesight

Your love and concern for your loved one comes through so clearly, and I am joining you in prayer for her as she is in the hospital after the doctors have said they have done all they can.

Scripture shows us Jesus giving sight to those who were blind, and He did so in different ways. At times He spoke a word and sight was restored, at other times He touched the eyes. In one account in Mark, He laid His hands on a blind man and at first the man could only see partially, as though people looked like trees walking, and then Jesus touched him again and his sight was made clear. That is the only recorded healing in His ministry that happened in stages, and it reminds us that healing is not always instant. Often it is gradual, and we can miss that God is still the one at work in a gradual process.

I believe God still heals today, and I believe that all healing is from Him. The natural processes of recovery that He has built into our bodies are themselves divine, because He is the one who created nature and its processes. At the same time, there is much about healing we do not understand. We do not know why some are healed in this life and others are not. Even the apostle Paul prayed three times for the removal of what he called a thorn in the flesh, and the Lord did not remove it but gave grace to endure it. To presume that God wills physical healing in every case is not what Scripture teaches, yet Scripture does teach us to come to Him with confidence. Matthew connects the ministry of Jesus to the prophecy in Isaiah that He bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses, and Jesus went about healing every kind of sickness and disease among the people. That shows His compassion and His power.

It is also important to remember that sickness or blindness is not necessarily a direct result of personal sin. When Jesus healed a man born blind in John chapter 9, others assumed the blindness came from sin before birth, but Jesus did not affirm that connection. Good people suffer illness, and it does not mean God is punishing them.

In the Gospels, healing often happened as people actively reached out in faith to Jesus. The touching of His garment became a point where faith was released, and virtue went out from Him. There is a difference between quietly believing God is able and actively trusting Him to act. I encourage you to keep bringing your loved one to Jesus in that active, trusting prayer, asking Him to work whether instantly, gradually, or through giving wisdom beyond what the doctors have yet seen.

Let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this dear one to You. You see her in the hospital and You know the limits of what human hands can do. We ask for Your mercy and Your healing power to rest upon her eyes and her whole body. If it is Your will, restore her sight as You restored sight to the blind in the Gospels. Give the physicians and nurses renewed insight and wisdom to see any way to help that has not yet been seen. We trust Your goodness and Your sovereignty, and we ask for Your peace to guard her and her family. Strengthen their faith to keep looking to You, and whatever the outcome, bring healing to heart and mind and draw them closer to Christ, in whom alone is salvation and hope. Amen.
