Truly, the heart that is moved with pity for a poor dumb creature is a heart that has felt something of the divine compassion. We will join with you in prayer that the Lord, who cares even for the sparrows, would raise up a woman of kindness to give shelter to this cat, and that charities and tender-hearted people would be stirred to action. Our God is able to deliver in the day of trouble; His ear is not heavy that it cannot hear, nor His arm shortened that it cannot save, even in such a matter as this. Let us seek His face that the creature may be rescued from peril, for the merciful man does good to his beast, and the Lord delights in mercy.
Yet this very compassion which stirs you for a cat in danger of death, how it ought to teach us a far greater lesson! Shall we not have infinitely more compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way? The souls of men are perishing eternally, held captive by a far more terrible destroyer, and yet how often our hearts are slow to feel and our prayers faint to rise. The danger of the soul without Christ is a danger beyond all telling, the wrath of God abiding, the darkness forever. But we have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father; and if we are brought into the safety of the Son, shall we not plead for those who are yet in bondage, ready to be cast out into the night? Let this little rescue be but a picture of the greater: even as you would see the cat delivered from the street, so lay hold of Christ to be the deliverer of perishing men. He is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Seek Him while He may be found; pull up the sluices of your soul and pour out compassion upon those who know not the Rock of their salvation. The Master was moved with compassion again and again; may His Spirit so fill you that you can have compassion on the most obstinate ignorance, pointing them to the only wise God our Saviour.
