Christian Sympathy-A Sermon for the Lancashire Distress
True Christian sympathy means feeling the needs of others as your own and acting with compassion.
Right Replies to Right Requests
God always gives good gifts when we sincerely ask Him, so trust His answers to your prayers.
Hindrances to Prayer
Prayerless living invites God’s wrath, while true prayer brings blessings and must not be hindered.
We hear your cry and we stand with you before the throne of grace together in Jesus name. We understand the heavy burden you are carrying for your family with rent and medical expenses and the need for daily food while being without work, and we bring all of this to our Father who sees and knows every need.

We are encouraged that you called upon the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to God and it is in His name that our prayers are heard. As it is written, There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:5 and In no other is there salvation, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. We thank God that you have called on that precious name.

We take comfort in the promises of God for provision. He tells us, But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well, Matthew 6:33. And My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:19. We have also clung to this truth, I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread, Psalm 37:25. Your heavenly Father knows you need shelter and food and medicine, and He cares deeply for you and your family.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up our brother from ### and his family to You in the mighty name of Jesus. You know his needs for rent, for medical care, and for daily bread, and You know the anxiety of being without work. We ask You to be his Jehovah Jireh, his provider, and to open doors of honest work for him that he may provide for his household with dignity. Give him wisdom and strength to seek opportunities diligently and to use the gifts You have given him, and connect him with faithful believers and a local church body who can bear his burden and encourage him. We ask for Your healing touch upon those who are sick, for You are Yahweh who heals us, and we ask for Your peace to guard his heart and mind as he trusts in You. Provide for his rent and his table, Lord, and let his family see Your faithful hand. We ask that You would guide his steps and establish his plans as he commits his work to You, for we remember Your word, Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed, Proverbs 16:3. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We encourage you, our brother, to keep seeking the Lord daily in prayer and in His Word, to cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7, and to be diligent in seeking work. The scripture reminds us, If anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, not as a harsh word but as an encouragement that God honors honest labor and desires to use our hands to provide. Ask God for wisdom for what work to pursue, for If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, James 1:5. Seek counsel from mature believers near you, share your needs with your local church family, and trust that God often provides through His people. Even in this trial, continue to give thanks and be faithful with what you have, trusting that God will make a way.

We are praying that God will answer with provision, open doors for employment, meet the medical needs, and keep food on your table, and that He will strengthen your faith to see His goodness in this difficult season.

Thank you for letting us know what you and your family are carrying right now. Trying to cover rent, medical expenses and food without steady work is a heavy burden, and we hear how much pressure you are under.

We want you to know your worth before God is not measured by a job, even when it feels like so much depends on finding one. It makes sense that this season feels overwhelming.

One step that can help when everything feels urgent is to name the most pressing need first with someone near you who can walk with you personally. If you have a trusted pastor or church leader nearby, we encourage you to meet with them soon and share the specific dates and amounts for rent, the medical need, and food for this week. They often know about local resources, budgeting help, or work connections in your community and can support you week by week in person. For ongoing medical needs, please stay connected to your local clinic for care alongside prayer.

We are holding you and your family before the Lord.

Father, we lift up our brother and his family to You. You see their needs for rent, food and medical care and the desire for work. Give him wisdom for each decision, strength for each day, and guide him to people nearby who can offer practical help. Provide what is needed and draw his family close to Your care and peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Your cry concerning rent, medical expenses, food for your family and the lack of work has been heard, and we have brought it before the Lord with you. Only God knows fully what you mean and what your family is bearing in ###, and He is not unmoved by your need.

We are reminded of what Scripture says, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might be rich. Our Lord Jesus knows what poverty is. It was poverty for Him to veil His infinite riches and take human flesh, to find no room in the inn, to live as the carpenter of ###, to hunger and thirst and be weary. He was poor in condition and reputation and in daily life, and therefore He is able to sympathize with those who have no work and who feel the pressure of rent and hunger and sickness. The riches He gives first are spiritual riches, forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life through His blood, and in Him we have all that we need for time and eternity.

And there is another mercy for you in your need. The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. It was not rent by man in a corner, nor was a small hole made for a few to creep through. It was rent by God alone, in the midst, from top to bottom, so that the greatest sinners might have ample passage to come to God. Because that one veil is destroyed, you may now come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The way is open through Christ alone.

We pray for you now to that throne. We ask the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, to have mercy upon you and your family, to provide daily bread, to open a door for honest work, to supply what is needed for rent and for medical care, and to grant healing and strength according to His will. We pray that He would give you wisdom, peace, and contentment in Him, and that He would connect you to a faithful local church where you can be known, encouraged, and helped in practical ways. We pray that you would seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, trusting that He who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows knows what you need.

Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Continue in prayer, in the Word, and in diligent labor as God gives opportunity, and look to Christ who became poor to make many rich toward God. May the Lord keep you, provide for you, and draw you nearer to Himself in this trial. Amen.
