Your request for renewed strength while carrying the ongoing weight of abuse and trauma has been brought before the Lord, and I want you to know that He hears you and He cares deeply about what you have suffered. What was done to you was evil and grievous, and God does not take it lightly. He sees the wounds that others have caused and He draws near to the brokenhearted.
Scripture reminds us that the Lord Himself is the strength of our lives. He is our light and our salvation, so we do not need to live in fear. He is our shield, and when our hearts trust in Him, He helps us and gives us reason to rejoice. One psalm prays, do not be far from me, O Lord, you are my strength, come quickly to help me and deliver my soul. Another declares that the Lord will give strength to His people and bless His people with peace. That is His promise to you, not just strength to survive a moment, but strength joined with peace for the days ahead.
It is important to know where that strength comes from. The Bible says if we faint in the day of adversity, our strength is small. If we try to live by looking inward for some hidden inner power, or by relying on our own wits and willpower, we will eventually come to a place where it is not enough and we will fall. But if our strength is in the Lord, we will not be left unable to stand, because it is not our strength at all. He will not let you down. As you learn your own weakness and put your trust in Him, you will find His strength made perfect in your weakness. The man whose strength is in God is called blessed, and even when he passes through a valley of weeping, God helps him turn that dry place into a well of refreshment, going from strength to strength.
Part of that strength comes as God brings healing. Jesus showed His power to heal in many ways. He healed the sick, He calmed the storm, He had authority over evil, and Matthew connects His healing work to what Isaiah foretold, that He bore our sicknesses and infirmities as well as our sin. Healing does not always look the same. Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it is gradual, and there are times when we do not understand why one person experiences a quick touch and another walks a longer road. Yet every process of healing is from Him, for He created our bodies and our minds and the very processes by which we recover. He not only heals the body, He also heals the mind and emotions, the deep scars and wounds left by trauma. He can touch those places that still hurt and bring restoration there.
You will find that strength grows as you give God the glory He deserves and see your problems in the light of His power rather than in the light of your own weakness. He is the great God who reigns over all, and when you remember who He is, your situation is placed in proper perspective. He becomes to you what you need, your healer, your shelter, your strong tower and citadel of safety, the covering of His wings where you can abide and trust. His Word becomes your portion and your support. That is why prayer is such a place of strength. When you bring every burden to Him and hold fast to what He has promised, you are moved from a sense of defeat to confidence and victory, because you know He will keep His word.
I am praying for you now that the Lord will be your strength and your portion in a very real way. May He lift you up when you feel faint, guard you and keep you, and fill you with His peace that steadies the heart. May His Word strengthen you day by day, and may you experience His healing touch upon the wounds of the past, whether that healing comes in a moment or through a gentle, gradual process. May He turn the valley you are walking through into a place of refreshment, and cause you to go from strength to strength as you trust in Him. I ask this in the name of Jesus, who bore our griefs and carries us with compassion and power.
