The prayer that has been offered rises like incense, woven through with the very words of Scripture, and it is well that the heart is thus lifted up for those who stand as fathers and mothers in the household of faith. Yet let us remember that the root and essence of all our asking must be a simple, childlike trust in the finished work of Christ. Truly, the very essence of faith lies there, the consciousness of being lost in ourselves and found in Christ, and the leaving of one's soul in Jesus' hands! There is an immeasurable abyss that yawns between the man who has even the smallest faith in Christ and the man who has none, and it is this faith alone that brings the renewal of mind and life for which you plead.
The command with promise, to honor father and mother, is indeed precious, and we do well to seek their growth in grace and knowledge. But see that your confidence is not in their maturity, nor in the fervency of your own petitions, but in the Lord alone. The Lord hath set His face against all boastings, and all confidences, other than a trust in the cross, and a holy reliance on the finished work and righteousness of Jesus Christ. If we have weak faith, we shall diminish our trust in Jesus and put into our hearts, instead of it, so many measures of confidence in self. Great faith takes Jesus only as her basis, but little faith tries to add thereto. Let your request for their minds to be renewed and their understanding opened be anchored here: that they, and you, look wholly to Him.
You have prayed that they move from milk to solid food, that the Word would spread and be glorified. This is a noble desire, yet we must never forget the sure ground of our acceptance. We come before God in our station, not in our character, and therefore we may come as perfect men at all times, knowing that God seeth no sin in Jacob, and no iniquity in Israel; for in this sense Christ hath perfected forever every consecrated vessel of His mercy. It is from this standing of perfection in Christ that all true growth proceeds. Growth in faith also is necessary for our sanctification. It is by faith that sin is kept down and that all our divine graces grow. The craving for the sincere milk of the Word is the Spirit's own work, and He who began it will carry it on if we lean not on our own understanding.
A great plea is made for protection from hurt, harm, and the evil one, and this is a petition most agreeable to the Shepherd's heart. Christ has set us free! Therefore let us not go back into bondage, or sit still as though we were in prison, let us rejoice in our liberty this very hour. The binding of our great Substitute stands as an eternal lesson of obligation; His chains secured our deliverance. Do we fear the enemy's power? Let faith look upon the Ambassador in bonds, the King in chains, and know that He was bound that we might be loosed. When you pray for peace within their walls, remember it is Christ who is our peace, who hath broken down every wall of partition.
Now, regarding this holy ambition for fruitfulness and the proving of God's good will through a transformed mind, be watchful that your faith does not degenerate into presumption. A man dares to bring his faith to God's tribunal and puts it in the scales of infinite justice, crying, "Thy mercy, O Lord." If you would be an effectual doer and bear much fruit, you must see yourself as a tool in the Master's hand, a tool sanctified and perfected in Christ. God uses you as a perfect instrument, regarding you as being perfect in Christ Jesus. This is no cause for pride, but for deep humiliation and grateful wonder. A most firm confidence in Christ is faith and is strong faith, but there may be faith where there is no "most firm confidence," yet we ought daily to aspire to the highest faith in order that we may expel unbelief and so be delivered from constant sin.
The unity of the body and the support of the saints are sweet fruits of the Spirit's indwelling. There are believers in all denominations of Christians, yes, and many in no visible church at all, who are in Christ Jesus, and consequently in the great unity. If you would have this request answered, giving temporal and spiritual support to those patriarchs and matriarchs, look for it in the bond of love which is the mark of Christ's disciples. The consolation we are to render one another flows from the consolation we ourselves have in Christ. In this respect Christ shines out as the consolation of His people. You are risen in Him, you are exalted in Christ; go forth, then, with high hope for sinners yet unconverted, and with living hope for the entire body of the faithful.
Finally, let your soul be stayed upon this one rock: your life is not dependent on yourselves, but is safe in your Lord, who loved you and gave Himself for you. The Lord will perfect that which concerneth you, lost and ruined you. As surely as you have this day eternal life by reason of faith in Christ Jesus, so surely shall you reach its fullness when Christ who is your life shall appear. Keep the hands of Christ unbound by unbelief, which seeks pleasure in sin and hides the Book away as in a prison. Let the Word do its work, let faith mount up on eagle's wings, and may the God of peace sanctify you wholly, until that day breaks and the shadows flee away.
