Relief

Disciple of Prayer
My son has so many things coming against him and undeserving of the turmoil. I’m so depressed over this watching him suffer.

We hear the heaviness in your heart as you watch your son face so much turmoil and we join with you in seeking the Lord for relief for both of you. It is a deep and painful burden for a parent to watch a child suffer and to feel helpless to stop it, and we want you to know we are standing with you in prayer and bringing your sorrow before our compassionate Father.

The Lord sees your broken heart and your son's struggles and He is near to you both. Psalm 34:18 tells us Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. We are reminded also to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7. Your depression and anguish over your son's suffering matter to God, He cares for you as a parent and He cares even more deeply for your son than you do. We understand you feel he is undeserving of this turmoil, and while we all face trials in this fallen world, God does not waste our pain. Romans 8:28 assures us We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Even when we cannot see the reason, He can use these hard circumstances to refine, to strengthen, and to draw your son closer to Himself. Isaiah 41:10 gives us this promise to cling to, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

We also gently want to share with you that you did not mention the name of Jesus in your request, and we want to make sure you know the hope we have is only through Him. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. And There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we have access to God and can come boldly to Him in prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus as your Savior and to pray for your son to know Him as well, for true relief and peace are found only in Him. Philippians 4:6-7 exhorts us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We pray together for you and your son now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear parent and their beloved son to You. Lord, You see every attack and every burden coming against this young man and You know the details of his turmoil. We ask for Your divine relief, protection, and deliverance over him. Place Your hedge around him, silence the schemes of the enemy, and make a way where there seems to be no way. Give him strength, wisdom, and hope to endure and to see Your hand working for his good. For this parent who is so depressed and weary from watching their child suffer, we ask for Your comfort and Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Lift this heavy burden of depression, renew their strength, and remind them daily that You are with them, that You love their son even more than they do, and that You are still on the throne. Help them to cast every care on You and to rest in Your unfailing love. We ask all of this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to keep bringing both your son and your own heart before the Lord daily in prayer, to stay in His Word where He will speak comfort to you, and to share your burden with trusted Christian believers or a pastor who can walk with you and support you. Keep trusting that God hears your cries for your son and that He is working even in this difficult season.

We have been thinking about your request and how heavy it must feel to watch your son face one thing after another. When you love someone and cannot take the burden from them, the sadness and helplessness can settle deep, and we are sorry you are walking through this kind of depression.

We admire your love for him. Simply staying present with him, even without answers, is a real gift. You do not have to carry his struggles and your own heaviness alone to prove your love.

When low feelings linger and make daily life harder, it can help to bring someone else in alongside prayer. If you can, consider talking soon with your doctor, a counselor, or a trusted pastor about how you have been feeling, and let one safe person in your life know honestly how you are doing this week. It may also help to ask your son gently what kind of support feels most helpful to him right now, rather than trying to fix everything at once.

Father, we lift this mother and her son to You. You see the turmoil he is facing and the sorrow she carries watching him suffer. Give them both comfort, wisdom for next steps, and people around them who will stay close. Draw them to Your care and peace as they look to You. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

To watch a son suffer and to feel powerless to lift his burden is one of the sharpest sorrows a parent can know, and it is no wonder that your spirit is cast down within you. The Lord sees this depression of spirit and He does not despise the tears that fall as you look upon your son's turmoil.

Remember how the father of the prodigal looked upon his returning son. It was not with icy eyes, but with compassion. Love leaped into his eyes and he felt for him. There was no anger in his heart towards his son. So it is with our Father in heaven toward those who come to Him through Jesus Christ. He looks upon His Son Jesus bearing our sin on the Cross, and because of that great love which led Him to give His Son for His people, His heart overflows with pity toward His children in their affliction. He gave up His only Son for your sakes, and for your son's sake, and He will understand your sorrow.

You speak of your son as undeserving of this turmoil. It is true that we cannot always trace the reason for the trials that come against those we love, but we know this, that the Father loves His Son so much that His love overflows its banks and covers all whom Jesus has taken to be His own. He laid upon His Son the work of healing this sin smitten world, and there is no pang in your son's life and no heaviness in your own heart that is hidden from Him. When you and I have seen enough to make us break our hearts, we may remember that the Father saw His only begotten Son suffering even unto death, and that infinite impression has made Him full of mercy toward sufferers still.

I pray that you will come to the Cross and look up and trust. Trust, trust Jesus, trust only Him. That word trust is the grandest word in the language of mankind. Cast your son and yourself into those hands that were pierced for you. He has said, I have loved you with an everlasting love. Bring your son before Him in prayer, not with a claim that we merit ease, but with the plea of His own gracious promise to receive sinners and to love them freely through the sacrifice of His Son. Ask Him to give your son relief according to His wise and tender will, to sustain him under what he bears, to turn his trials to his good, and to draw him nearer to the Saviour who came to seek and to save that which was lost.

And for you who watch and weep, pray that the Lord will lift this depression of spirit and keep you from questioning His tender love and gracious care. He invites you into fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, and as you increase in the knowledge of Him through the revelation of the Spirit, you will find your heart going out in quiet confidence even while the storm still blows. May He give you grace to rest in His everlasting love, to know that your prayers are heard, and to find your relief not only in the removal of the burden but in the presence of Him who bears it with you.
