Relationships

Dhitlor

Beloved Servant
There are some relationships that formed in my life in the past year that God is directing me to let go of because they are not equally yoked even though the relationships seem mostly harmless. Please pray God would let these relationships die out without difficulty or anger or anything like that. Pray that certain relationships which are unequally yoked and harmful would be totally removed from my life. Thank you.

We join you in this request and we thank God for giving you discernment to recognize that some relationships in your life are not equally yoked and need to be released even when they seem mostly harmless on the surface. It takes spiritual maturity and obedience to heed the Lord's directing when our own feelings might tell us to hold on because there is no open conflict. We commend your desire to obey.

Scripture is very clear about this principle. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? And Amos 3:3 asks Can two walk together, unless they have agreed? We are also warned in 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived. Evil companionships corrupt good morals. and in Proverbs 13:20 One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. Even when a relationship does not appear openly harmful, if it pulls us away from wholehearted devotion to Christ, dulls our conscience, or keeps us from walking in wisdom and purity, it is harmful to our walk with God. Friendship with the world can quietly become hostility toward God as James 4:4 teaches, so we must choose our close companions carefully.

If any of these relationships you mention are romantic or courtship relationships, we want to encourage you that God's design is for courtship to be entered into with the clear goal of marriage to another Christian believer, since marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman that honors God. We pray you will pursue only relationships that are centered on Christ and moving toward that godly marriage, and that you will turn away from any relationship that would lead you into fornication or compromise, for God calls us to flee sexual immorality and to keep the marriage bed pure.

We also noticed your request speaks of God but does not mention Jesus Christ. We gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We are saved by believing in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, and by calling on His name. It is in His name that we pray and are heard.

We now pray together for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up our brother or sister to You. We thank You for the work You have already done in their heart to show them which relationships are unequally yoked and not Your will for their life. We ask that You would give them courage and grace to obey You fully and to set healthy and biblical boundaries. We pray that You would cause those relationships that need to end to die out peacefully without difficulty, anger, bitterness, gossip, or lingering entanglement. Remove what is harmful and unequally yoked totally from their life according to Your perfect will, and guard all hearts involved from hurt and offense. Replace what has been removed with godly friendships and, if it is Your will, with a godly spouse who loves You and will walk equally yoked in faith and purpose. Fill any loneliness with Your presence and with fellowship among believers who will encourage holiness. Give our friend wisdom to walk in love while not compromising, to speak the truth with gentleness, and to trust You as You prune for greater fruitfulness. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer and in the Word, to stay planted in a Bible believing fellowship where you can be sharpened and encouraged, and to trust that when God asks us to let go of something, it is because He has something better for our holiness and His glory. As Psalm 1:1 says Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers. Keep choosing that blessed path and the Lord will direct your steps and bring peace to this transition.

We hear your desire to walk faithfully and to handle these relationships in a way that honors God and keeps peace where possible. Wanting them to fade without anger or hurt is an understandable prayer, and we join you in asking for wisdom and grace in how it unfolds.

What you described reminds us that boundaries are a bit like a property line. They help us name what we are responsible for, our values, time, energy, choices, and where we need to guard our hearts so we can stay both connected to others and free to follow what God is showing us. When a connection is not equally yoked, even if it seems harmless on the surface, it can quietly pull at that freedom.

One gentle next step that often helps is to get clear on a couple of external boundaries you can live with consistently. That might mean not initiating contact, graciously declining invitations that draw you back in, or if a conversation is needed, speaking the truth in love briefly and kindly without debating or over-explaining. It also helps to let a trusted pastor or mature friend know what you are stepping back from, so you are not carrying the decisions alone and have support to stay steady.

Father, we lift this dear one to You and ask for Your guidance and peace in each of these relationships. Give wisdom for when to step back quietly and when to speak, and guard all involved from anger and harm. Strengthen their heart to follow You with courage and surround them with healthy, encouraging fellowship. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your request has been heard and we join with you in prayer, thanking God for the work of His Spirit in giving you discernment to see where a yoke is unequal, even when the eye of man might call it harmless.

It is a mercy when the Lord shows us that what seems small or pleasant is yet drawing us away from a single eyed obedience to Christ. The Scripture saith, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, and that precept is not grievous, for the yoke of Christ is easy and His burden is light. When we bear His yoke we find rest, but when we pull with another who walks not in His way, the neck is galled and the furrow is crooked. To turn from such a yoke is wisdom, and to do so at the Lord's directing is obedience.

We pray that the Lord will give you grace to walk faithfully in what He has shown you, with clearness, kindness and firmness, and that He will in His providence cause those relationships which are not according to His will to fade and be removed. We ask that He would do this without strife or bitterness, guarding your heart from anger and guarding the hearts of others from offense, so far as it depends upon you, and keeping you in peace. May He keep your tongue with grace and your steps with truth, that your separation from what is harmful may be marked by meekness and not by harshness.

We pray also that the Lord would fill what is left vacant with fellowship that strengthens your faith, that you may be yoked with those who love Christ and who will help you bear His yoke evenly, looking to Him and adjusting your life to walk in step with Him. May He grant you comfort in obedience, assurance that to lose what hinders is to gain Christ, and daily strength to choose the narrow way.

We commend you to Him who is able to keep you from falling, trusting that as you seek first His kingdom, He will order your friendships and your path for your good and His glory. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour we pray, Amen.
