Beloved of All
Hi, I'm returning to work and volunteering and need two references but my old employment was bad, I won't approach them and I'm quite isolated and don't have a GP or a priest. Please send inspiration, thank you, and Jesus I know You'll help. Amen

We hear your heart in this request and we join with you in bringing it before the Lord in Jesus' name, for we know He hears and He cares deeply about your next steps into work and volunteering.

It is understandable to feel isolated and anxious when you need references and your former employment was a difficult experience that you do not wish to revisit, and when you do not have a GP or priest who knows you well. Please know that you are not forgotten or unseen. God sees your situation and your desire to move forward faithfully.

We take comfort in what Scripture tells us, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6. And we are reminded, My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:2. You have already turned to the right source, for Jesus Himself invites us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28.

We also hear your trust when you say Jesus I know You will help, and we rejoice with you in that faith. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. He has a good plan for your life and your work, and He will make your paths straight as you trust Him. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

We want to offer some gentle encouragement and practical inspiration as you seek references. Many employers and volunteer organizations understand that not everyone can provide a recent employer reference, especially after a bad experience, and they will often accept character references instead. Think and pray about who in your life knows your character, reliability, and kindness, even if not in a formal professional role. This could be a neighbor who knows you well, a fellow volunteer or community group member, a former teacher or course leader, someone you have helped or who has helped you, or a leader of any group or activity you have attended. Even a brief connection where someone can speak honestly about your trustworthiness and willingness to serve can be valuable. It can also help to be honest and brief with the organization, explaining that your previous employment ended badly and you are unable to approach them, but you can offer alternative people who know your character. Most will respect your honesty.

We also want to encourage you in your isolation, for God did not create us to walk alone. Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10. And Scripture encourages us not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another. Hebrews 10:25. Even if you do not currently have a church or priest, we encourage you to prayerfully seek a local Bible believing church where you can find fellowship, support, and in time, people who can know you and stand as references and friends. God often provides community in unexpected places.

Let us pray together.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that they have turned to You for help and that they trust in Your provision. Lord, You see the isolation and the worry about references, and You know the hurt from past employment. We ask You to bring healing from that past experience and to replace anxiety with Your perfect peace. We pray You would open doors for meaningful work and volunteering according to Your will, and that You would provide the right people to act as references, even from unexpected places. Lead this dear one to kind and understanding employers and volunteer coordinators who will hear their story with grace. Father, we also pray You would gently lead them into community, into fellowship with other believers where they can be encouraged, known, and supported. Strengthen their faith and remind them daily that You are with them and that their help comes from You. Guide every step and make their path straight. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word, and to take one small step at a time. God is faithful to provide what you need as you walk forward with Him.

We hear how much you want to step back into work and volunteering, and how heavy it feels to need references when your last workplace was difficult and you feel quite on your own right now without a GP or priest to turn to. That is a lot to carry, and we admire your willingness to keep going.

For references, many organisations will accept what they call a character or personal reference when an employer reference is not possible. Think about anyone who has seen you be dependable over time, even in small ways. That could be a neighbour, a landlord, someone you volunteered alongside even briefly, a course tutor, a colleague who was not your manager, or a leader of a community group or activity you have attended. It helps to ask someone who knows your reliability, punctuality and kindness rather than someone with a formal title.

It can also help to be upfront with the new employer or volunteer coordinator. A short note explaining that you are unable to provide a reference from your previous employer and asking what alternatives they would accept often opens a door, and many volunteer centres are used to helping with this and can sometimes provide a reference after you start.

We are praying for you as you take these next steps.

Jesus, thank you that you see this desire to serve and provide. Give wisdom for the right people to ask, favour with those making decisions, and steady encouragement each day. Lead to supportive community along the way. In your name, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

🙏Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. God, please forever honor this prayer over each of our lives. God Thank You. Amen, so be it by faith, and by faith, it is so. Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer has been heard and we thank you for sharing it so honestly. It is a good and right desire to want to work and to give yourself in volunteering, and we will bring this need before the Lord with you.

The Scripture says, Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us and establish Thou the work of our hands upon us, yea the work of our hands establish Thou it. That is our prayer for you now, that God would establish your going out to work and your labour of love for others, and make it fruitful for His glory.

You speak of being isolated and without the usual references, and of a past employment that was painful. Be encouraged that to be empty and to feel you have nothing to bring is not a barrier to God. Cling to the eternal mercy of God who casts out none that come to Him by Jesus Christ. It is a blessed thing to be empty and to believe that God can fill you, to be nothing and to believe that He can make you His child and establish your steps. Believe in Jesus Christ and look to Him for mercy, and know that if He has begun a good work He has promised to carry it on.

The Lord also teaches us, I must work the works of Him that sent Me while it is day. Your desire to work is itself a good work, and the doctrine of His grace is not to make us slothful, but wherever the Holy Spirit works He makes men to work. He works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure, that we also may work out what He has worked within us with diligence and faith. So take courage and give diligence as God enables you.

For the practical need of two references, when the former employer cannot be approached and you do not have a GP or minister who knows you well, there are still honest and acceptable ways forward that many employers and volunteer coordinators will understand:

1. Explain the situation briefly and honestly to those you are applying to. Many organisations will accept character references when an employment reference is not possible, especially for volunteering.

2. Consider who does know your character and reliability, even if not an employer. This may be a neighbour who has known you over time, a fellow volunteer or attendee of a community group, a tutor or course leader, a former colleague who is not a manager, a landlord, or a support worker or adviser if you have had contact with a job centre or community service. A reference does not have to be from a professional of high standing, only from someone of good character who can speak truthfully about your honesty, punctuality and kindness.

3. For the longer term, seek to be planted where you can be known. Faithful attendance in a local Bible believing church, or steady involvement in one volunteer role, will in time give you those who can speak for you with integrity. There must be real work and it must be whole hearted work, and God delights to establish the work of our hands when we offer it to Him and pray much about it.

Do not be discouraged by the sense of isolation. Come as you are to the place where prayer is known to be made and where the Word is preached, and let your thoughts search the Scriptures. Remember the grand old records of Inspiration and see how God has saved and helped seeking souls, and your memory may thus beget faith in you by the work of the Spirit.

We will pray that Jesus, in whom you have rightly put your trust, will open the right doors, provide suitable referees, and guide you to a place of work and service where you can labour faithfully while it is day. May He give you favour with those who read your application, and may He supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

If it would help, we can help you word a short note to explain to an employer why you are offering character references instead of an employer reference. Please let us know if you would like that help, and we will continue to pray for you.

Your prayer has been heard with care and compassion, and I thank you for sharing this need so honestly. To feel isolated while trying to take good steps forward into work and volunteering can be discouraging, but the Lord sees your desire to serve and to provide, and He draws near to those who come to Him with a humble and contrite heart.

Scripture reminds us that God sets the lonely in families and that He is close to the lowly in spirit. Your lowliness in coming to Him, not with demands but with trust that Jesus will help, is itself pleasing to Him. He does not despise a contrite heart, and He promises to give wisdom to those who ask Him. Take courage that your worth is not measured by a difficult employment history, but by being made and loved by God and, through Christ, made new and kept pure for His purposes.

For the practical need of two references, there are often gracious options even when an old employer and a GP or priest are not available:

A character reference can come from anyone who has known you in a responsible context for some time and can speak to your reliability and character. This could be a neighbour, a landlord, a former teacher or tutor, a fellow volunteer, a course leader, or someone from a community group, library, or support service who knows you.

For volunteering, speak openly with the volunteer coordinator. Explain briefly that you are unable to provide an employment reference from your previous workplace and ask if they would accept one or two character references instead. Many charities understand this and will accept references from people who know you personally but are not family members. Sometimes they will also allow you to begin on a short trial period while references are arranged.

For work, if an application asks for an employment reference, you can note that you are able to provide character references and offer to discuss your work history at interview. You are not required to give a reference from a place that was harmful. An employer may accept an alternative, such as a reference from a previous colleague who is willing to speak for you personally, or from a volunteering placement once you have started one.

In the coming weeks, it may help to take small steps to widen support. Registering with a GP when you are able, and finding a local church to visit regularly, can provide both community and, over time, people who can naturally become referees because they know your faithfulness. Even a few weeks of consistent volunteering can lead to a trusted referee.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, thank You that You see this need and that You care for those who feel isolated. Give peace in place of anxiety, and open the right doors for work and for volunteering. Provide the right people to stand as references, people who will speak truthfully and kindly. Guide every application and conversation, and lead to a community where support and friendship can grow. Grant wisdom for each next step and confidence that You are at work for good. Amen.

Keep seeking Him daily, keep taking the next small faithful step, and trust that He who has begun a good work will provide what you need in His time.

Thank you for sharing your request so honestly and for holding on to the confidence that Jesus will help. Wanting to return to work and to give time in volunteering is a good and hopeful step, and it is understandable that needing two references feels like a large obstacle when a past workplace was difficult and you feel isolated without a doctor or priest to turn to.

The story of Job speaks to this kind of place. Job was a real man who lived long ago, yet the needs he expressed are the same needs people still carry today. He lost much, he felt alone, and he cried out from deep grief and confusion. His friends came to comfort him but they did not comfort well. They argued, they accused, and they added to his burden. In the end God showed that He had not forsaken Job, even when it appeared that He had, and that He was working through the trial with purpose and care. Scripture also shows us the background Job could not see, that God knew him, valued him, and set limits on what the enemy could do. That same truth is for you. God sees you fully in this season, He knows the difficulty of the old employment and the isolation you feel, and He remains fair and just and present even when support around you feels thin.

Job also cried out for someone to stand between himself and God, a mediator who could bring him near. That cry is answered in Jesus Christ, who alone stands between God and humanity and lays His hand upon both. Through Him you can come directly to the Father, be heard, be forgiven, and be helped. Your prayer in Jesus name is not a small thing. It is the right place to bring both the practical need and the ache of feeling alone.

On the practical side for references, many employers and volunteer coordinators will accept alternatives when a previous employer cannot be approached and when you do not have a doctor or priest who knows you well. It often helps to explain briefly and calmly that you are not able to provide a reference from your last employer and to offer other people who can speak to your character, reliability, and willingness to learn. Consider who has seen you over time in ordinary life, even if not in a formal role:

A volunteer supervisor even from a short trial period or taster session, a tutor or course leader, a support worker or adviser, a landlord or housing officer, a neighbour who knows you well, a colleague from work who was not a manager but worked alongside you, or a leader of a community group, library, charity shop, or activity you attend. Two character references of this kind are often accepted, especially for volunteering and for returning to work after a gap.

You could contact the volunteer coordinator or employer first and ask what they will accept, for example whether a character reference is sufficient and how recent it needs to be. A short, simple note that you are isolated at present and rebuilding connections is usually understood. If you are able to begin a small volunteer role, that role itself can soon provide a reference for the next step.

Isolation makes all of this harder, and it is worth taking gentle steps to widen support as you are able. A local congregation, community centre, or support service can become a place where people come to know you over weeks and months, which both eases loneliness and naturally creates people who can later speak for you. You do not have to do everything at once. One steady connection at a time is enough.

Be encouraged that God is not measuring you by how many people you can list on a form. He cares about your faithfulness and your desire to serve, and He is able to open doors even when the usual paths are closed. Keep bringing this need to Him in prayer, keep taking the small practical steps you can, and keep trusting the Lord Jesus who is your mediator and helper.

Praying for you that God will provide the right references, guide you to gracious people who will support your application, and give you strength and peace as you step back into work and volunteering. May He remind you daily that you are seen, valued, and not forsaken, and may He establish the work of your hands as you seek to serve Him and others.
