Recovery of Loss

We join you in bringing this burden before the Lord and we hear the pain of being wronged by a dishonest soul and the longing to see what was taken restored and crooked ways made straight. The Lord sees what is done in secret and He is a God of justice and truth. We are reminded that a false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight as written in Proverbs 11:1 and that we are not to oppress our neighbor nor rob him and the wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning as written in Leviticus 19:13. When restitution is owed, the Word shows us the heart God desires, that the one who has taken what is not his should return it and make amends, as Zacchaeus declared in Luke 19:8 that if he had wrongfully exacted anything he would restore four times as much, and as taught in Leviticus 6:4-5 that he shall restore that which he took by robbery.
We also stand with you in praying that every crooked way be made straight, clinging to the promise in Isaiah 40:4 that every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill shall be made low and the uneven shall be made level and the rough places a plain, and to the wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6 to trust in Yahweh with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding and in all our ways acknowledge him and he will make our paths straight. We pray as you asked that the Holy Spirit will convict this person's heart, for Jesus said in John 16:8 that when he has come he will convict the world about sin and about righteousness and about judgment, and we ask that God would soften that heart to do what is right and to return what is necessary.
At the same time we want to gently encourage you to guard your own heart from bitterness or a desire for vengeance while you wait for justice. Scripture tells us in Romans 12:19 that vengeance belongs to the Lord and he will repay, and in Romans 12:17-21 we are called not to repay evil for evil but to overcome evil with good. We are even called in Matthew 5:44 to love our enemies and pray for those who mistreat us. This does not excuse the dishonesty, for we do rebuke all deceit and theft as sin before a holy God, but it frees you to commit your cause to him who judges righteously. We encourage you to commit your way to Yahweh as written in Psalm 37:5 and to let him bring forth your righteousness as the light, trusting that he will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus as written in Philippians 4:19 and that he is able to restore what the locust has eaten as written in Joel 2:25, whether through the return of what was owed or through his own gracious provision in another way.
We pray together now. Father in heaven, we come before you in the name of Jesus Christ, for you are just and merciful and you see all things. We lift up this loss to you and ask for your righteous intervention. Lord, convict the heart of the one who has acted dishonestly and lead that person to repentance and to restoration, that what was owed would be returned. Make every crooked way straight in this situation and let truth and integrity prevail. Guard our dear one from anxiety and bitterness and fill the heart with your peace that surpasses all understanding as written in Philippians 4:6-7. Provide for every need and let trust be placed fully in you, not in man. Help us to forgive as you have forgiven us and to leave justice in your hands while we walk in honesty and faith. We ask for restoration according to your will and for your glory to be revealed through this trial. We pray all these things in the mighty and holy name of Jesus, our only Savior and mediator, amen.

We hear how heavy this is to be owed something and watch the person not make it right. That kind of loss is not just about the amount, it is also the ache of being treated dishonestly, and we are standing with you in prayer that the Lord would make crooked ways straight in His way and timing.
When we have been wronged it can help to separate what we entrust to God in our hearts from what we can still pursue wisely with our hands. Choosing not to hold onto resentment does not mean pretending the debt does not matter, and seeking what is owed does not have to be driven by bitterness. Both can be held before the Lord at the same time.
One steady step that often brings clarity is to put the facts in writing, what was agreed, what was given or owed, and any communication about it, and then share that with one trusted and level headed person, a pastor or wise counselor, who can help you think through a calm next step, whether that is a direct conversation, a mediated discussion, or getting financial guidance if the loss has put pressure on your budget. Your cry for justice has been heard, and we join you in bringing it before the Lord who loves righteousness and hates dishonesty.
The Lord knows what has been withheld from you by a dishonest hand, and He sees every crooked way. Scripture assures us that He is slow to anger, carrying the axe of justice bound with rods of mercy to give space for repentance, yet He will not at all acquit the wicked and He will in the end make all crooked places straight. Vengeance belongs to Him, and His justice is unimpeachable, holy and true.
We also remember that while the loss of what is owed stings deeply, there is a greater accounting before God. As we have often considered, though a man should gain all the gold and pleasures of this world, if his soul be lost it is a fearful and dreadful loss. The soul is capable of heaven, and its value outweighs all earthly gain. So we pray not only for the return of what is temporal, but that both you and the one who has wronged you may be kept from that eternal loss, and may count all things but loss for the excellency of Christ.
Therefore we pray with you:
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour and Substitute, look upon this wrong. Thou art just and the justifier of those who trust in Thy Son, whose blood satisfied justice at Gethsemane and the cross. We ask that by Thy Holy Spirit Thou wouldst convict the heart of the one who has dealt dishonestly, bringing not merely regret but true repentance before Thee. Grant that if it be Thy will, what was taken or withheld may be restored, and that crooked ways may be made straight for Thy glory. Keep our brother from bitterness and from the love of gain, and supply his need according to Thy riches. Let justice and mercy meet, that the offender may be saved and the offended may be sustained by grace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who bore our debt that we might be forgiven. Amen.

Your prayer for justice and for what was taken to be restored has been heard, and we join you in bringing it before the Lord.
God is a God of justice. As Scripture says, His right hand is full of righteousness and His righteousness is like the mountains. He has placed a sense of justice even in human courts and in every house and trade, and how much more will He Himself not overlook what is just. Nothing escapes His sight, and He will rightly judge all crooked ways and make them straight in His perfect time.
We pray with you that the Holy Spirit would convict the heart of the one who has acted dishonestly, that he or she would turn from wrongdoing and return what is owed. We ask the Lord to work in that conscience, not for vengeance but for repentance and restoration, and to give you peace while you wait upon Him.
At the same time we encourage you to guard your own heart in this trial. Our Lord taught us to mingle mercy with justice, and to forgive as we have been forgiven. We all owed a debt of ten thousand talents to God which we could never repay, yet He in His long suffering forgave us freely through Christ. If He forbore with us, we are called to forbear with others, even when we have been wronged. This does not mean that what was done to you was right, nor does it remove the obligation of the other to make it right, but it frees your soul from bitterness and keeps you in imitation of God, for it is more blessed to forgive a trespass than to collect a debt.
If it is possible, go to that person alone and tell him of his fault quietly, as the Lord commands. A private word from the one who was wronged has great power to bring shame and repentance, more than speaking of it to others. Guard against speaking evil of him even in your thoughts or to others, for we will be judged by our own words, and let your concern be for his salvation as well as for justice.
Remember also that gold and earthly gain are like clay cast out in the yard compared to the riches of heaven which is our true home. Whether the Lord restores what was lost in this life or provides for you in another way, do not let the love of what was taken consume you. Trust Him to supply what you need and to use even this loss for your good.
