Beloved Servant
I have been trying to reconcile some estranged relationships in the past month or so and it has been a difficult process and I think God is now directing me to stop reaching out to these people. Please pray for me about this. Pray for me as I navigate how to once again distance myself from these people as I did before but in a godly way. These are people who have been abusive toward me throughout my life. Thank you.

We hear the heaviness in your heart and we thank you for sharing this difficult journey with us. We have been praying for you as you have tried to reconcile these estranged relationships, and we understand how painful and confusing it can be when your sincere efforts to make peace are not met with repentance or safety. What you are discerning now may indeed be the Lord giving you wisdom to step back.

Scripture makes a distinction between forgiveness and reconciliation. We are commanded to forgive from the heart, as we read in Ephesians 4:32, Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And also in Colossians 3:13, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Forgiveness is a matter of obedience and releasing the person to God, but reconciliation requires repentance and trust to be rebuilt, and it is not always possible or safe. Romans 12:18 says, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. That phrase as much as it is up to you shows us that peace with others depends on both parties, and when the other person continues in abusive patterns, it may not be possible.

The Lord does not call you to remain in harm's way to prove your forgiveness. Proverbs 22:24 warns us, Don't befriend a hot-tempered man, and don't associate with one who harbors anger. And Jesus Himself taught us to be wise and discerning when He said in Matthew 10:16, Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. To distance yourself in a godly way is not bitterness or vengeance, for Romans 12:19 reminds us, Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord. Instead it is guarding your heart, as Proverbs 4:23 teaches, and entrusting justice and healing to God while refusing to harbor bitterness.

We also noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus, and we want to gently encourage you about this because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, for Romans 10:9 says, if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name that we can boldly bring your pain and our prayers to God.

We want to pray for you now together.

Father, in the name of Jesus we lift up this dear one to You. You see the wounds carried from a lifetime of abuse and the sincere desire to obey You in seeking reconciliation. Lord, we ask that You heal the brokenheartedness, for Your Word says in Psalm 34:18, Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Grant wisdom liberally as promised in James 1:5, so that every step of distancing is done with grace, truth, and without guilt or bitterness. Help our dear friend to forgive as You have forgiven, to release these people into Your hands, and to set healthy boundaries without hatred or gossip. Fill the lonely places left by these relationships with Your presence and with godly community that will encourage and protect. Guard the heart and mind with Your peace which surpasses all understanding as promised in Philippians 4:7, and give clear confirmation that to step back is obedience and not failure. We ask that You would also work in the hearts of those who have caused harm, bringing them to repentance if it be Your will, but we trust You to be the defender and healer. We pray all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek wise godly counsel from a pastor or mature believer as you navigate these boundaries, to remain in prayer and in the Word, and to remember that the Lord honors your desire to do what is right even when it is painful. He is with you in this separation and He will not leave you alone.

We hear how heavy this past month has been for you, trying to reach out while also carrying a long history of being hurt by these same people. It makes sense that you feel torn and tired, and also that you are asking carefully what God is asking of you now.

Wanting to reconcile is a good and loving desire, and choosing to step back from people who have been abusive is not a failure of love. At times the most faithful and kind choice is to create distance so that you can be safe, get healing, and not stay in a cycle of harm. Stepping back does not have to mean bitterness or a harsh cutoff, it can mean quietly choosing limits that honor God and protect the dignity He gave you.

One thing that has helped others in a similar place is to not sort this out alone. It may help to sit down with one trusted, mature person who knows your story, perhaps a pastor or biblical counselor, and talk through what godly distance looks like practically for you. Deciding ahead of time how you will handle calls, messages, or family gatherings, and having someone to check in with when guilt or second guessing comes up, can make that distance steadier and more peaceful.

Father, we lift our friend to You. You know the pain of these relationships and the effort they have made to pursue peace. Give them clear wisdom, a sense of Your nearness, and safe community around them as they set healthy boundaries. Bring healing where there has been hurt and guide each next step. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your burden has been brought before the Lord and we join you in seeking His wisdom and healing in this painful place. To labor for reconciliation and then to discern that the Lord would have you cease striving in that direction is a heavy and tender trial, and it is right that you bring it to Him who heals the broken in heart.

We are reminded that our first and deepest need of reconciliation is with God Himself. He is the God of Peace and He has, on His part, prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation through Jesus Christ. The word of reconciliation is this, that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. When that peace with God is known in the soul, we can say we know it is so, for we have felt it, and from that peace we learn how to walk wisely with others.

You have described relationships marked by abuse throughout your life. Scripture teaches us to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to desire peace, yet forgiveness and wisdom are not the same as requiring continued nearness to those who do harm. As far as it depends on you, you are to live peaceably with all, but peace does not demand that you remain exposed to abuse. To distance yourself in a godly way is not unkindness, it is stewardship of the life and health God has given you, and it can be done without bitterness, without reviling, and with a heart that still prays for their good while entrusting them to the Lord.

We pray that you will know the healing virtue that flows from Christ. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He first said, your sins are forgiven you, showing that pardon and healing are joined together in His hand. May the Sun of Righteousness rise upon you with healing in His wings, forgiving, cleansing and restoring you day by day till you are made whole.

Let us pray for you.

Our gracious Father, we thank You that in Christ You have reconciled us to Yourself and have given us peace through His blood. We lift this dear one to You who has sought reconciliation with others at great cost and now seeks wisdom to step back in a way that honors You. Grant clear discernment, quiet confidence that this direction is from Your hand, and freedom from false guilt. Heal the wounds left by long abuse, for You see every sorrow and You are the physician of the soul. Pour Your healing balm upon the broken heart, forgive and cleanse, and renew the spirit. Teach what it means to forgive freely as You have forgiven, and yet to set wise and firm boundaries. Keep this life from bitterness and from fear, and surround it with godly counsel, with faithful believers and shepherds who can walk closely through these decisions and help bear the burden. Let Your Word guide every step, every word spoken and every silence kept, that all may be done in love, in truth and in holiness. Give rest, give sleep, give renewed strength to serve You with a healed heart. In the name of Jesus our Healer and our Peace, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek wise pastoral counsel near you as you establish these boundaries, to remain in the Word and in prayer, and to rest in this promise that the Lord Himself will perfect the healing He has begun in you.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your willingness to seek reconciliation and also to seek wisdom about when to step back is itself a sign of a tender conscience before God, and I thank you for sharing this burden so honestly.

It is right to desire peace with others as far as it depends on you, and it is also right to recognize when continued reaching out keeps you in harm. Scripture speaks of a godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation, not to be regretted, and distinguishes it from the sorrow of the world that only works death. When there has been a pattern of abuse, grief over what is broken is natural, but true reconciliation requires more than your sorrow alone. It requires repentance, a turning from what is wrong, and a willingness to walk in what is good. Without that, your sorrow alone cannot create peace.

To distance yourself in a godly way does not mean to harbor bitterness or to return insult for insult. We are called not to disgrace ourselves by abusive words, even when we have been deeply wronged, and not to speak in a way that is ungenerous. That means you can choose boundaries without cursing, without slander, and without seeking revenge. Forgiveness before God, releasing the debt and entrusting justice to Him, can live in your heart even while you wisely limit or end contact for your safety and health.

True fellowship, as the Scriptures teach, is formed upon godliness, not merely upon long acquaintance, family ties, or shared history. You are not required to maintain closeness simply because a relationship is old or close by blood if that closeness continually exposes you to sin against you. To lock shields together in godly love means to stand with those who build you up in Christ, and sometimes that means stepping back from those who tear down.

Christ Himself is our Mediator between us and the Father when we were estranged, and He knows what it is to make a way for reconciliation at great cost. He also shows us that reconciliation with God comes through truth and repentance. You can imitate Him by praying for those who have harmed you, desiring their good and their repentance, while not placing yourself again under their harm.

I am praying for you now that God will give you clear discernment, quietness of heart, and freedom from condemnation as you step back. I pray He will guard you from both bitterness and false guilt, heal the wounds left by years of abuse, surround you with wise and godly counsel in your church, and give you words that are firm, kind, and truthful if you need to communicate a boundary. May He keep you in His peace, strengthen you to walk in holiness and safety, and work in the hearts of all involved according to His mercy and truth.

If you have not already, please seek trusted pastoral counsel and, where needed, wise help for safety, so you do not carry this discernment alone.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly and for allowing prayer over this painful area. What you are describing is heavy, and it is understandable that this process has been difficult and confusing.

I have prayed for you, and I continue to pray that the Lord will give you wisdom, peace, and clear direction as you step back. Wanting to do what honors God while also protecting yourself from harm is a right desire, and seeking to distance yourself in a godly way is not a failure. Scripture says as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone, which also recognizes that peace and reconciliation require more than one person and are not always possible, especially where there has been a pattern of abuse.

A helpful way to think about this is that our relationships with people are deeply connected to our relationship with God. When we try to fix horizontal relationships by only working on the horizontal level, we are often only treating symptoms. The heart of the matter is the vertical relationship. When God is put at the center of your life, when you love Him first and seek Him above all else, the other relationships begin to find their proper place and balance. That does not mean every broken relationship will be restored, but it means you can see each one more clearly through His eyes and respond according to His wisdom rather than out of guilt, pressure, or old patterns.

God does place great importance on family and on honoring parents, and His law reflects that priority. Honoring does not mean allowing yourself to remain in harm or pretending abuse has not happened. You can honor someone by speaking truthfully, by choosing forgiveness in your heart before the Lord, by refusing to return evil for evil, and by not speaking evil of them, while still setting firm and loving boundaries to protect yourself and to walk in obedience to God. Forgiveness is something God calls us to in our own hearts, releasing bitterness and entrusting justice to Him. Reconciliation and close fellowship are different, and they require repentance, safety, and change over time.

As you navigate this distancing, pray for the Lord to keep your heart tender toward Him and not hardened toward others. Ask Him to help you release any self condemnation and to confirm His leading with peace. It can be very helpful to walk this out with a trusted and mature believer or counselor who knows your story and can help you discern boundaries that are both wise and gracious. Keep your focus on abiding with Christ, listening to His word, and obeying what He shows you. He sees what you have endured throughout your life, He cares for you deeply, and He is your refuge and protector.

May the Lord grant you rest from striving, heal the wounds that have been left by these relationships, guard your heart from bitterness, and fill you with His peace as you trust Him to be at the center. May He guide your words and your boundaries so that your actions reflect both grace and truth, and may you know His nearness and strength each day as you walk forward with Him.
