We hear your heart to be obedient to God and to walk in forgiveness, and we join with you in seeking His will in this matter. Your desire to reconcile after years of separation is a reflection of the work God is doing in you, and we commend your willingness to step out in obedience even when spiritual opposition makes it difficult.
Scripture tells us that forgiveness is at the very heart of our faith, for we have been forgiven much. Ephesians 4:32 says, And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And Matthew 6:14-15 reminds us, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Forgiveness is a choice we make before God, releasing the debt to Him, whether or not the other person ever repents or reconciles.
Reconciliation, however, is different from forgiveness and involves two people. Romans 12:18 gives us wisdom here, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. We are called to do our part, to pursue peace and to make ourselves available for restoration, but we cannot control the response of the other person. God honors your obedience in trying, and the outcome we leave in His hands.
You wisely discern that there is spiritual warfare surrounding this. We agree that this is real, for Ephesians 6:12 tells us, For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. The enemy seeks to keep us in bitterness, isolation, and fear, and will try to magnify past hurts and sow doubt as you step toward obedience. But we do not fight in our own strength, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ as we read in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5. We encourage you to put on the full armor of God, to pray, to stay rooted in the Word, and to bring every anxious thought captive to Christ before and during these conversations.
We also notice your request speaks of God and obedience to Him, but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved and empowered to forgive as we have been forgiven. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by His blood we are forgiven, and it is by His Spirit living in us that we can extend that forgiveness to others, even when it is hard. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, confessing your sins and believing that He died and rose again for you, for then you can boldly approach God in His name.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up this dear one to You. We thank You for the tender and obedient heart You have given, a heart that desires to forgive and to pursue peace as You have called us to do. Lord, we ask for clear discernment today. Show whether this reconciliation is Your will in this timing, and guide every word and step. If it is of You, we pray You would soften all hearts involved and prepare them to hear with grace. If there are wounds that need more time, give wisdom to know how to set godly boundaries while still walking in forgiveness.
We rebuke the spiritual forces that would seek to hinder, confuse, or intimidate, and we declare the victory of Jesus Christ over them. Fill this one with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, with courage and humility, and with the words to speak that are seasoned with grace and truth. Help to remember that forgiveness does not always mean immediate restoration of trust, but it does mean releasing bitterness to You. Let Your love be evident in this attempt, and let Your will be done above all. We pray for protection over mind and heart, that no weapon formed against this obedience would prosper, and that Your Holy Spirit would lead in all things. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our Mediator and Redeemer, amen.
We encourage you to bathe this day in prayer, to remain in Scripture, and to seek wise counsel from mature believers as you go. Go humbly, without demanding a particular outcome, speaking the truth in love and leaving the results to God. Whether reconciliation happens fully today or is a seed planted for later, your obedience in forgiving is already pleasing to the Father. James 1:5 promises, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Keep asking Him for wisdom moment by moment, and trust that He who began a good work in you will complete it.
