I went to school in Southern California and am somewhat aquatic. I spend an hour or more a day in the ocean during the warmer months of July, August, and September in New England.
When we landed in Hawaii, I bought "Fins" (thrust flippers) at Walmart yesterday after the plane landed. I tried to buy a "Boogie Board" but none of them had "leashes" and there were none sold separately as accessories. A boogie board with no leash in Hawaii would be lost frequently due to larger waves and currents... Surf boards are several hundred dollars...
The waves outside our resort are phenomenal. Clean breaks, nice curls and not unlike Malibu where I used to frequent. Huge... The only thing was the flippers were big so I couldn't really thrust hard, and the concierge had gone home early since it was Sunday and so I couldn't rent one which was my plan...
So I had no boogie board, loose flippers (I couldn't kick correctly or they would fall off), and I didn't know the conditions...
I did well for about an hour and a half with no board. I went out further and further until the locals were dodging me, again, not unlike Malibu -- but I had no board...
I caught a wave, great... Then getting back out there was a little tiring, but I found a reef, regained my position, and caught another... This time, I noticed I had drifted about 100 yards since the first one... Ok, I'll catch a third then swim in -- or so I thought!!!
I caught the third and it deposited me in no man's land between the reef and the shore, all the while the waves had already broken and I lost more and more ground each time they hit me... There was no reef to stand on this time and the current was much stronger... Remember, I have no flotation device like a surf board or a boogie board...
After swimming non-stop full-speed for about 7 minutes, I realized I was gaining no ground... I was spent and gave a cry of exasperation for help... I swam another minute or two and then was starting to worry... I was really spent and my legs were cramping up... I had only been worried one other time in my life, once when we jumped into a pool that had an aqua cover on it years ago...
So I saw someone who had ridden a wave in close enough to hear me yell for some help... He asked if I was in trouble and I said yes...
Thank God he came over and rescued me, his name was ### and he was a Christian celebrating Father's Day... He towed me in on his boogie board, gave me some advice and told me to breathe...
I climbed out of the water on slippery rocks careful to not fall and up onto land... ### gave me a water and was playing with his little one in the water...
Please pray I get a good-sized boogie board, get in a little better shape (that was quite a workout) and do this thing up right. Thank you for prayers for safety, Psalm 91 protection and Revival in My heart on vacation, as well as for my Mom. Bless ### as well, and his household... Mahalo in Jesus' Name.
