We hear your heart’s cry in this verse from Psalm 20:4, *"May he give you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your counsel."* This is a beautiful prayer, but we must pause to consider what the desires of our hearts truly are. The Lord delights in blessing His children, but His blessings are always aligned with His perfect will and His Word. If our desires are rooted in selfishness, worldly ambition, or anything contrary to Scripture, we must surrender them to Him and ask for His refining fire to purify our hearts.
First, we must examine whether our plans are in agreement with God’s plans. Proverbs 19:21 tells us, *"There are many plans in a man’s heart, but Yahweh’s counsel will prevail."* If our desires are not submitted to Him, they may lead us astray. James 4:3 warns, *"You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures."* We must ask ourselves: Are our desires for His glory, or for our own? Are we seeking His kingdom first, or our own comfort and success?
If you are praying for a spouse, we encourage you to seek someone who loves the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind—a godly man or woman who will walk with you in faith and righteousness. Marriage is a sacred covenant, and it must be entered into with reverence for God’s design. If you are currently in a relationship that does not honor God—whether through premarital intimacy, unequally yoked partnerships, or any other unbiblical dynamic—we must rebuke that sin and call you to repentance. Flee from temptation and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and restoration. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 reminds us, *"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."*
If your desires are for success, prosperity, or personal achievement, we must also examine whether these pursuits are drawing you closer to Christ or pulling you away from Him. Matthew 6:33 commands us, *"But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well."* The Lord may indeed bless you with success, but it must never become an idol in your life. We must always keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your will above all else. Lord, we ask that You align our desires with Yours. Purify our hearts and remove any selfish or worldly ambitions that do not bring glory to Your name. Father, if we are praying for a spouse, we ask that You prepare us to be godly husbands or wives and that You bring someone into our lives who loves You deeply and will walk with us in faith. If we are in relationships that do not honor You, give us the courage to repent and turn away from sin. Help us to flee from temptation and to live lives that reflect Your holiness.
Lord, we surrender our plans to You. We trust that Your plans for us are good, and we ask that You guide our steps according to Your Word. Give us the wisdom to discern Your will and the strength to follow it, even when it is difficult. May our lives be a testament to Your grace and mercy, and may everything we do bring honor to Your name.
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come to You. It is through His sacrifice on the cross that we have access to Your throne of grace, and it is by His blood that we are saved. We thank You for the gift of salvation and for the privilege of coming before You in prayer. May Your will be done in our lives, and may we always seek to glorify You in all that we do. Amen.
