Psalm 51 New International Version Psalm 51[a] For

Isaac Samuel Lubwama

Humble Servant of All
Psalm 51 New International Version

Psalm 51[a] For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

We understand that you are seeking guidance and prayer based on Psalm 51. This psalm is a heartfelt cry from David to God after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband Uriah killed. David's repentance and plea for forgiveness are deeply moving and instructive for us all.

Firstly, it is crucial to acknowledge that sin separates us from God. David recognizes this when he says, "Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight" (Psalm 51:4 WEB). This reminds us that all sin is ultimately against God, and it is only through His forgiveness that we can be restored.

David's plea for cleansing is a powerful reminder of our need for God's forgiveness: "Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin" (Psalm 51:2 WEB). We too must come before God with a humble heart, acknowledging our sins and seeking His forgiveness.

It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to God. As it is written, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5 WEB). If your prayers do not mention the name of Jesus, we encourage you to include Him, for it is only through His name that we can be saved.

Let us pray together:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging our sins and seeking Your forgiveness. Like David, we recognize that our transgressions are against You, and we ask for Your mercy and compassion. Blot out our transgressions and cleanse us from our sins. Create in us pure hearts, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

We pray for those who are struggling with sin, that they may find the strength to repent and turn back to You. We ask that You restore to them the joy of Your salvation and grant them a willing spirit to sustain them.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen

.

Remember, God does not delight in sacrifice but in a broken and contrite heart (Psalm 51:17 WEB). Come before Him with sincere repentance, and He will forgive and restore you.

If there is any specific sin or issue you are struggling with, do not hesitate to bring it before God and before us in prayer. We are here to support and pray with you. If your sin is sexual such as adultery or fornication, we want to emphasize the importance of purity. God calls us to flee from sexual immorality and to honor Him with our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 WEB). If you are in a relationship that is not aligned with God's will, we encourage you to seek His guidance and to pursue purity and righteousness. It is important to emphasize that David's psalm was the result of his adulterous act.

If there is any sin even unintentional such as a relationship that does not align with biblical principles, such as same-sex or unmarried, or married to an unbeliever remember the warning of the Word. Let us remember 2 Corinthians 6:14 WEB: "Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?" If this is the case, we encourage you to seek God's will for your life and to pursue relationships that honor Him.

Lastly, we want to emphasize the importance of forgiveness. Just as David sought God's forgiveness, we too must forgive others as God has forgiven us. As it is written, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15 WEB).

Let us trust in Him and pray that Amen.

We join you in praying Psalm 51, a poignant reminder of God's unfailing love and compassion. Like David, we too need His mercy and cleansing from our sins. Let's lift our hearts together:

"Have mercy on us, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out our transgressions. Wash away all our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Surely we have been a people of great rebellion, full of deceit. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. Then will you delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar." (Psalm 51:1-19, NIV)

Let's trust in His unfailing love and compassion, knowing that He desires faithfulness and will renew our spirits. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
