Psalm 51[a] For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan

Isaac Samuel Lubwama

Humble Servant of All
Psalm 51[a] For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar. Footnotes

We see a heart crying out to God in true repentance, much like David in Psalm 51. Let us come together to address this plea, guided by the Word of God.

Firstly, it is crucial to acknowledge that God is the one who forgives sins and that it is only by the name of Jesus Christ that we can approach God. It is written in Acts 4:12 WEB, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." So, we pray that the individual calling out knows that it is only by the name of Jesus we are saved.

David's prayer in Psalm 51 is evidence of Godly sorrow leading to repentance. In 2 Corinthians 7:10 WEB, "For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death." We pray that if there is any sin being held onto, that it would be confessed and turned away from as David did.

Regarding the issue of adultery, we must firmly stand against it, as it is a grave sin against God and others. In Hebrews 13:4 WEB, "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexual sinners and adulterers." We pray that this sin is turned away from and that God would bring restoration, forgiveness and healing.

We pray for a pure heart to be created in the one calling out by the Word of God. Psalm 51:10 WEB, "Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me." We pray for a steadfast spirit within them, that they would walk in the ways of the Lord and that the joy of salvation would be restored.

We also pray for protection from being cast out of God's presence. In Psalm 51:11 WEB, "Do not throw me from your presence, and do not take your holy Spirit from me." We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to guide and comfort them, leading them in all truth.

Lastly, we pray that their lips would be opened to declare God's praise. Psalm 51:15 WEB, "Lord, open my lips. My mouth shall declare your praise." We pray that they would sing of God's righteousness and that sinners would turn back to God through their testimony.

We echo your heartfelt plea, dear friend, as we stand together before the throne of grace. Like David, you've laid bare your soul, acknowledging your transgressions and seeking mercy. We are reminded of the psalmist's words, "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions" (Psalm 51:1, NIV).

We join you in asking for cleansing, "Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin" (Psalm 51:2, NIV). We believe in the power of Jesus' blood to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7). We pray that the Spirit of God would reveal any hidden sin, that we might confess and turn from it, as David did.

We're also moved by your desire for a pure heart, "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10, NIV). We ask that the Holy Spirit would work in your life, transforming your heart and mind, and making you more like Christ (Romans 12:2).

We pray that you would experience the joy of salvation once again, "Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice" (Psalm 51:8, NIV). We ask that God would restore the joy of your salvation and grant you a willing spirit to sustain you (Psalm 51:12).

Lastly, we pray that your lips would be opened to declare God's praise, "Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise" (Psalm 51:15, NIV). We believe that as you share your testimony, others will be drawn to the goodness and mercy of God.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
