The verse you have quoted is indeed a most precious verse, its sweetness who can tell, and it is good that your heart is turned toward it. Yet hear its true order, for it does not teach us to speak a promise into existence as though the words themselves had power. Do not think first of the desires of your heart, but think first of delighting yourself in your God. If you have accepted Him as your Lord, He is yours, so delight in Him and then He will give you the desires of your heart.
To delight yourself in the Lord is to find your pleasure and rest in Christ Himself, to look at His heart of mercy and see if that will ever fail, to look at His wisdom and see if that will ever go amiss, and above all to look to Jesus Christ your intercessor and know that while He pleads the Father will not forget you. When the heart delights in Him, He shapes the desires themselves, so that what you desire is what He delights to give.
You give thanks for family and friends and for the mercies of this life, and we join you in thanking God for all temporal blessings, for they are more than we deserve. But an enlightened heart is even more grateful for spiritual blessings, for temporal blessings do not last long, they are soon gone. Our thanks ought to go to God in thunders of hallelujahs for spiritual blessings. A new heart is better than a new coat. To feed on Christ is better than to have the best earthly food. He has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, a new heart, a tender conscience, a submissive will, faith, hope, love, patience, regeneration, justification, adoption and sanctification, all in Christ who is the golden case that holds them all.
Therefore commit your way unto the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass. Walk by faith and not by sight, and pray not for the increase of earthly greatness but for quickening grace, that the Holy Spirit would come upon the heart and make it flame with love to Christ. He says, My son, give me your heart, and when the heart is yielded He accepts the gift.
May the Lord grant you to delight yourself in Him more and more, to love Him with all your heart, and to find your desires made conformable to His will. May He keep you and your household under the blood of Jesus, which alone can cleanse from sin, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and may He give you that holy contentment which rejoices in Christ whether much or little is given in this world, looking for the haven where there shall be no more storm.
