Proverbs, Chapter 30

30:1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; The oracle. The [noble] man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:

30:2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, And don't have the understanding of man;

30:3 And I have not learned wisdom, Neither have I knowledge of the Holy One.

30:4 Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if you know?

30:5 Every word of God is tried: He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

30:6 Don't add to his words, Or else he will reprove you, and you will be found a liar.

30:7 Two things I have asked of you; Don't deny me [them] before I die:

30:8 Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for me:

30:9 Or else I will be full, and deny [you], and say, Who is Yahweh? Or else I will be poor, and steal, And profanely use the name of my God.

30:10 Don't slander a slave to his master, Or else he will curse you, and you will be held guilty.

30:11 There is a generation who curse their father, And do not bless their mother.

30:12 There is a generation who are pure in their own eyes, And [yet] are not washed from their filthiness.

30:13 There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.

30:14 There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among man.

30:15 The horseleach has two daughters, [crying] Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, [Yes,] four that don't say, Enough:

30:16 Sheol; and the barren womb; The earth that is not satisfied with water; And the fire that does not say, Enough.

30:17 The eye that mocks at his father, And despises to obey his mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.

30:18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yes, four which I don't know:

30:19 The way of an eagle in the air; The way of a serpent on a rock; The way of a ship in the midst of the sea; And the way of a [noble] man with a young woman.

30:20 So is the way of an adulterous woman; She eats, and wipes her mouth, And says, I have done no wickedness.

30:21 For three things the earth trembles, And for four, [which] it can't bear:

30:22 For a slave when he is king; And a fool when he is filled with food;

30:23 For an odious woman when she is married; And a female slave when she takes the place of her mistress.

30:24 There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise:

30:25 The ants are not a strong people, Yet they provide their food in the summer;

30:26 The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks;

30:27 The locusts have no king, Yet go they forth all of them by bands;

30:28 The lizard, you can catch it with [your] hands, Yet she is in kings' palaces.

30:29 There are three things which are stately in their march, Yes, four which are stately in going:

30:30 The lion, which is mightiest among beasts, And does not turn away for any;

30:31 The greyhound; the he-goat also; And the king against whom there is no rising up.

30:32 If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, Or if you have thought evil, [Put] your hand on your mouth.

30:33 For the churning of milk brings forth butter, And the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; So the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

This reminded me of the last part of the book of Job (chapters 38 to 41). Good reading when I lose sight of how BIG God really is...when I get focused on a problem and let myself get anxious or worse start to question God.

Yep, no questions here Lord!

Job put it well after he'd been reminded ... "Therefore I abhor [myself], And repent in dust and ashes." Job 42:6

This Proverb is a sort of prophecy, specifically, the divine instruction of the Lord through his prophets. Prophets were inspired men, who spoke for God to man, or for man to God. The prophet describes himself as “brutish,†perhaps this is his how he sees himself. He views himself as lowly compared to the all powerful, all-knowing wisdom of his Lord. Verse 5 reinforces the fact that the Lord’s Word is flawless and His promises have been thoroughly tried and tested. His Word is so pure that we need not and must not embellish make additions, or alter it in any way, or we will be speaking falsehoods and be found a liar. In verses 7 – 9, two things are asked of the Lord 1) to keep him far away from sin and 2) he asks the Lord to make him neither poverty stricken, nor wealthy. The request seems to be only for contentment through necessities, such as daily bread. He fears that if he becomes rich, he may become full of pride, so much that he may decide he has no use for the Lord and will forget Him. On the other hand, he fears being too poor because he may be tempted to steal. Verse 10 advises not to slander or bear false witness. If this happens, the perpetrator’s guilt will be made known.

Next, Proverb 30 illustrates four different kinds of hateful persons. They are graceless children, hypocrites, the proud and vain, and the cruel oppressors. These children are insatiable and are compared to a “horseleech†or land that is never quenched by water. To the hypocrites or the persons who attempt to conceal their real character, it is said their eyes will be pecked out by vultures. This may signify being left unburied after death. Verses 18 -20 illustrates hypocrisy through four examples of concealment of traces of action, i.e., the eagle, the snake, the ship, and the maiden. Then it is revealed the maiden is in fact, an adulterous woman who eats, wipes her mouth, and professes innocence of the shame she has wiped away. Pride and cruelty of oppressors, who are not worthy of their power, will cause a disruption in society and an outcry of the oppressed.

Versus 24-31 uses animal examples to illustrate aspects of the moral world the reader is expected to apply to their life. The ants represent perseverance and foresight. They may lack strength and are seen as insignificant by man, but are highly successful creatures because of their activity. The others provide various comparisons of what is considered majestic or desirable, uniting competence with dignity and poise (also known as grace). As none can hope, successfully, to resist such a king, suppress even the thought of an attempt. The Proverb ends with the advice there is no hope in suppressing or resisting such a king and the anger and evil thoughts should not be encouraged. Anger will only bring about strife. This is compared to other ills that also arise from planning evil, and are natural effects from natural causes.

Thank you for your guidance and imput to this book, it helped me to better understand, I will continue to study. there are many times that I feel that I am not worthy of the Lord, but this helped to place my feelings into perspective, I sometimes forget the overwhelming power that the Lord has, and my feel so humbled.
