Proverbs, Chapter 29

29:1 He who being often reproved hardens his neck Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

29:2 When the righteous have increased, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man bears rule, the people sigh.

29:3 Whoever loves wisdom rejoices his father; But he who is a shepherd of prostitutes wastes [his] substance.

29:4 The king by justice establishes the land; But he who exacts gifts overthrows it.

29:5 A [noble] man who flatters his fellow man Spreads a net for his steps.

29:6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; But the righteous sings and rejoices.

29:7 The righteous takes knowledge of the cause of the poor; The wicked does not have understanding to know [it].

29:8 Scoffers set a city in a flame; But wise men turn away wrath.

29:9 If a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man, Whether he is angry or laughs, there will be no rest.

29:10 The bloodthirsty hate him who is perfect; And as for the upright, they seek his life.

29:11 A fool utters all his anger; But a wise man keeps it back and stills it.

29:12 If a ruler harkens to falsehood, All his ministers are wicked.

29:13 The poor man and the oppressor meet together; Yahweh lightens the eyes of them both.

29:14 The king who faithfully judges the poor, His throne will be established forever.

29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom; But a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

29:16 When the wicked are increased, transgression increases; But the righteous will look at their fall.

29:17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

29:18 Where there is no vision, the people go wild; But he who keeps the law, he is happy.

29:19 A slave will not be corrected by words; For though he understands, he will not give heed.

29:20 Do you see a man who is in a hurry in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

29:21 He who delicately brings up his slave from a child Will have him become a son at the last.

29:22 An angry man stirs up strife, And a wrathful man abounds in transgression.

29:23 The pride of man will bring him low; But he who is of a lowly spirit will obtain honor.

29:24 Whoever shares with a thief hates his own soul; He hears the adjuration and utters nothing.

29:25 The fear of man brings a snare; But whoever puts his trust in Yahweh will be safe.

29:26 Many seek the ruler's favor; But a man's judgment [comes] from Yahweh.

29:27 An unjust man is disgusting to the righteous; And he who is upright in the way is disgusting to the wicked.

The following discussion is based on the January Reading of This Chapter of Proverbs at ericasp.com:

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law (Proverbs 29:18).

I remember a different translation of this verse becoming very popular in the United States during the 1990s. It was in conjunction with the rise in popularity of mega-churches led by CEO-style pastors serving as figureheads and visionaries. They said, "Without vision, the people perish." The visionary leader was, presumably, essential for rallying people to a bigger cause, a greater good -- and without it the people would languish and, yes, perish.

Then the translation of that phrase from the Proverbs turned out to be less clear-cut as originally thought.

I, for one, am glad for the NIV's translation of Proverbs 29:18: "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint." This is not because I have anything against mega-churches or CEO-style visionary pastors (as a matter of fact, I genuinely believe that God has used -- and is using -- these styles of ministry in incredible ways). I'm just not one of them. My personal style of leadership and ministry tends to rely more on individual- or small-group-interactions -- more on the belief in the power and potential of the Average Joe. My personal experience has been that God works most powerfully when ordinary people come into contact with the God of the Universe and find themselves filled with the Holy Spirit, supernaturally-empowered for extraordinary activity in the world. So this is where it's so cool to see that there's room for this philosophy of life and leadership in Proverbs 29:18 as well.

See, the way I read this verse hinges heavily on the concept of revelation. Individual interaction with God -- a personal sense of revelation, if you will -- is essential for the life of faith. In the end, faith doesn't get very far when it's motivated solely by tradition, or by rule-keeping legalism, or by logic. No, it has to start with revelation. But where this is no revelation, the people cast off restraint. They cannot keep up with the charade of faith or religion if there is no internal conviction.

Fortunately, we have a God who is ready and waiting to reveal himself to us -- to provide us with this critical catalyst of revelation. He's is ready and waiting to reveal himself to us, if we earnestly seek him. In the Book of Revelation (pun unintended!), chapter 3, verses 19 and 20, it says, "Be earnest and repent! Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." So if you're looking for a sense of revelation, all you have to do is ask for it. Just look for it. The Bible is a great place to start.

Thanks for presenting the thoughts and ideas of beginning to reference others by using the repentence and study of the word. This has made me stronger reading this Proverb. By understanding and by reading more. I will grow stronger in my heart in my walk and direct the peace I have in my heart toward others. Helping others by the experiences I have had and the hardships I have endured I will increase faith and love forever strong in the Holy Spirit! Not only in myself but in the fellowship of others. Thanks for renewal of spirit by the sharing of your personal strength in God! Thanks for the reminder of how merciful and lucky we are to have Christ in us. Amen.

v8 Scoffers set a city afire [inflaming the minds of the people], but wise men turn away wrath.

this week my spirit grieves bec the scoffers/mockers the Lord has put in their midst are the atheist.

the man the Lord wants me to intercede for is born i a catholic raised in a christian school, i believe irish.

my point is that, i've read how they malign the Scripture and made fun, scoff and mock. As a believer how

i want to defend my belief but i could not and that made me cry nights bec i was a coward. The past few

days and just now the Lord confirms that i did right in not commenting bec they're blinded and my

assignment is to pray and intercede for this one man. 2Peter3:3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that

in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.

the LORD does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

I love 29.17 Correct your son and he will give you rest. This one verse is so true. We see children left to themselves to figure things out and then they do not know what to do when they get in trouble. Christian parents should be aware of the dangers our children face when left to fend for themselves. Please pray for your children as they grow up and then instruct them in the Word of God. Sunday schools should be equipped with the latest equipment there is so their teachers will have an opportunity to tell the truth to all young people. I am praying for all children of God to be true to Jesus and serve Him with their whole hearts.

Scoffers will come and they are here. The book of Proverbs is so up to date and we need to heed the word of God. These scoffers are on TV and preaching a distorted and untrue messages and a lot of people believe them. Let us all pray that Jesus will keep us true to His word and live by it day by day. With our testimony of true and holy life many will come to know Jesus as their personal saviour and Lord. Amen
