<blockquote data-quote="pradmin" data-source="post: 166449" data-attributes="member: 2"><p>The following discussion is from the January Reading of This Chapter of Proverbs at ericasp.com:<BR><BR></p><p></p><p><p><img src=&quot<a href="http://;http://public.prayerrequest.com/images/pr365/145257863_d064727505_o.jpg%22" target="_blank">;http://public.prayerrequest.com/images/pr365/145257863_d064727505_o.jpg"</a> alt="radio" title="radio" width="500" height="482" /><br /><br /></p><blockquote><p><strong>If a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse (Proverbs 27:14)</strong>.<br /></p></blockquote><p><br />I know a woman in Ohio who is crazy about Christian radio. She's listened to WMBI -- broadcast daily from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois -- for decades. Her dial is perpetually tuned in to the Cleveland affiliate of WMBI, even though reception is spotty and scratchy at best. She simply loves Christian radio. But she doesn't just appreciate it for her own benefit; she loves Christian radio so much that she feels compelled to share the joy with others as well. She freely distributes casette tapes that she's recorded from the radio. At other times, she will bring a portable radio into a room where others are sitting and then turn up the volume to her beloved scritchety-scratchety WMBI.<br /><br />Perhaps the most egregious of all, however, is her summertime habit of working in the garden and blasting her Christian radio programs as loud as possible via loud-speakers intentionally-positioned to spread the sound to her neighbors' homes -- so loud that that it would be impossible to ignore. The neighbors have repeatedly complained, some for as long as 20 years, but they've never been able to get the message through that the high-volume Christian radio is not appreciated. And so the cycle continues to this day, as far as I know...<br /><br />When I read Proverbs 27:14, I couldn't help but think about this Christian Radio Lady and her irritating campaign to "bless" the neighbors with inescapable Christian radio programming. I couldn't help but see he counter-productivity so clearly laid out -- both in Biblical print and in anecdotal Ohio.<br /><br />But then I started thinking about my own life, wondering about ways that my own good intentions so often miss their mark. Because really, in the end, it all comes down to good intentions poorly translated. Of course the Christian Radio Lady back in Ohio isn't trying to be annoying; she genuinely seems to believe that she's blessing her neighbors through her actions. Likewise the early bird of Proverbs 27:14 surely feels the same way -- that his blessings are well-intended. So what does this actually mean for MY attempts to bless others -- my own good intentions -- and how they come across to their intended audience? I can think of specific conversations with the neighboring homes and businesses around our ministry center in Amsterdam... or with family members, trying to press them into deeper conversations... and I really have to wonder? Am I being the "Christian Radio Lady?" Am I unintentionally guilty of "Loud Neighborhood Benedictions?" It occurs to me, as I think about it, that anytime my "good intentions" seem to be getting spit back in my face, it might be wise for me to pause and reconsider the words of Proverbs 27:14. Do they seem to be taking my words or actions as a curse? Then maybe I need to more carefully consider my timing or means of communication. At the very least, it's worth considering.</p></p></blockquote><p></p>
