Proverbs 1 New International Version
Purpose and Theme
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a] knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.
Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.
Wisdom’s Rebuke
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[d] she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

We see that you’ve shared Proverbs 1 from the New International Version (NIV), and we are grateful for the opportunity to reflect on the timeless wisdom of Scripture. The Book of Proverbs is a treasure trove of godly instruction, calling us to walk in wisdom, reverence for the Lord, and righteous living. Let us turn to the World English Bible (WEB) to meditate on these truths together, as we seek to apply them to our lives in a way that honors Christ.

Proverbs 1:7 declares, *"The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction."* This verse sets the foundation for all true wisdom: a heart that fears and reverences the Lord. Without this fear—this awe, submission, and deep respect for God—any pursuit of knowledge or understanding is vain. The world offers many forms of "wisdom," but if it does not begin with the fear of Yahweh, it is ultimately foolishness. We must ask ourselves: Do we approach life, decisions, and relationships with this holy fear? Or are we being swayed by the empty promises of human reasoning that excludes God?

The passage also warns vividly against the allure of sinful company and the deception of ill-gotten gain (Proverbs 1:10-19). How often are we tempted to compromise our integrity for temporary pleasure, wealth, or approval? The world entices with promises of satisfaction, but Scripture reveals the truth: *"Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it"* (Proverbs 1:19, WEB). The enemy would have us believe that sin offers freedom, but it only leads to destruction. We must be vigilant, clinging to the wisdom of God rather than the fleeting allure of sin.

Wisdom is not passive—it calls out to us, urging us to repent and turn from our foolish ways (Proverbs 1:20-33). Yet how often do we ignore her voice? The consequences of rejecting wisdom are severe: *"I will mock when calamity overtakes you... Then they will call to me, but I will not answer"* (Proverbs 1:26-28, WEB). This is a sobering reminder that there comes a point where persistent rebellion hardens the heart beyond repentance. But praise God, we are not left without hope! If we heed wisdom’s rebuke and turn to the Lord, He promises to pour out His thoughts and teachings to us (Proverbs 1:23). What grace! What mercy!

Let us also remember that true wisdom is found in Christ, who is *"the power of God and the wisdom of God"* (1 Corinthians 1:24, WEB). Apart from Him, we cannot truly understand or walk in wisdom. If we seek knowledge, discernment, or direction, we must first ensure we are abiding in Christ, for *"in him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge"* (Colossians 2:3, WEB). Any pursuit of wisdom that does not center on Jesus is incomplete and will ultimately fail.

We encourage you to examine your heart in light of these truths. Are there areas where you have been listening to the voice of the world rather than the voice of wisdom? Are there relationships, habits, or desires that are leading you away from the fear of the Lord? Now is the time to repent and turn fully to Him. Wisdom is not merely an intellectual pursuit—it is a lifestyle of submission to God’s Word and a heart that seeks His will above all else.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts hungry for Your wisdom. Lord, we confess that too often we are drawn to the empty promises of this world, seeking satisfaction in places that can never truly fulfill us. Forgive us for the times we have ignored the voice of wisdom and chosen our own ways. We ask that You would instill in us a holy fear of You, a reverence that shapes every decision, every relationship, and every desire. Open our eyes to see the deception of sin and the beauty of Your truth.

Lord, we pray for those who are being enticed by the allure of sinful company or the pursuit of gain at any cost. Give them the strength to turn away and the courage to walk in righteousness. May they hear wisdom’s call and respond with repentance and obedience. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may discern Your will and walk in it faithfully.

We thank You, Father, for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in whom all wisdom is found. Help us to abide in Him, to seek His face, and to trust in His Word above all else. May our lives be a testimony of Your wisdom, drawing others to the saving knowledge of Christ.

We ask all these things in the precious and mighty name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Proverbs 1 indeed offers us a wealth of wisdom to ponder. As we reflect on verse 7, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction," let's consider the importance of humility in our pursuit of wisdom. Pride often blinds us to our need for wisdom, leading us to believe we already know enough or that we can navigate life's complexities on our own. But true wisdom begins with a humble recognition that we are finite, fallible beings in need of guidance. It's in this humility that we open ourselves up to learning, growing, and understanding the world around us as God intended.

Let's also meditate on verses 10-19, which warn us against the allure of sinful company and the deceptive promises of ill-gotten gain. How often do we find ourselves tempted to compromise our integrity for temporary pleasure, wealth, or approval? The world may promise satisfaction, but Proverbs reminds us that such pursuits only lead to destruction. Let's be vigilant, clinging to God's wisdom rather than the fleeting allure of sin.

Moreover, wisdom isn't passive; it calls out to us, urging us to repent and turn from our foolish ways (verses 20-33). Yet, how often do we ignore its voice? Let's not harden our hearts to the point of no return. If we heed wisdom's rebuke and turn to the Lord, He promises to pour out His thoughts and teachings to us (verse 23). What grace! What mercy!

Lastly, let's remember that true wisdom is found in Christ, who is "the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24). Apart from Him, our pursuit of wisdom is incomplete and will ultimately fail. Let's ensure we are abiding in Christ, seeking His face, and trusting in His Word above all else.

Let's pray together:

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of Your wisdom. Help us to approach life, decisions, and relationships with humility, recognizing our need for Your guidance. Give us the strength to resist the temptations of this world and the courage to walk in righteousness. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may discern Your will and walk in it faithfully. Help us to abide in Christ, seeking His face and trusting in His Word above all else. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
